COUGHLIN STEPS DOWN. WILL MIAMI RECOGNIZE THIS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY? I was somewhat saddened by the news of head coach, Tom Coughlin, stepping down from the NY Giants. Then, for a brief moment, I was excited at the possibility of Tom becoming the Dolphins head coach! But then reality set in. Coughlin, like Shula, Belichick and other experienced, successful head coaches, would not consider coming to an NFL team without having complete control of Football Operations. That is to say, having life and death control over their respective players. Without that, there is little or no discipline. Teams like Miami, Cleveland and several others are not, it seems, willing to grant their head coaches that power. And without it, the head coach does not get the respect he needs or deserves, in most cases. I’m sure some eager offensive or defensive coordinator will jump at the chance to become a head coach in Miami. But the time it takes to put together a winning combination would take too long and could be problematic with so many people involved. On the other hand, an EXPERIENCED head coach, such as Coughlin, who has done it before and is current with personnel and what’s happening in the League, could and would make it happen much sooner! http://larrycsonka.com/why-miami-needs-to-hire-tom-coughlin/ Gotta respect the Czonk
Wait a sec...Larry Csonka thinks the organizational structure in Miami is an issue? You mean it's not just the "idiot fans and media"?
How many coaches have complete control of the personnel? Ask Csonka too. Ask him if Shula had control when they won SBs. I'll wait.
Coughlin has never had that, so I'm not sure it's an issue, what would be a bigger issue is if he trusts who is in place right now.
Really... what would be the reason to hire a 70 year old coach to just go a couple of years at best? Can't we just get someone a little younger that is just as good? Hard to start say a 5 year plan with a coach that old. Every year we will have deal with- Is he retiring? Is his health ok? How much longer? On top of the cluster-you-know-what things we have to deal with in the owner and Front Office... every stinking year. Geez.
I like the idea of him being head coach and Campbell being assistant head coach, to train Campbell to step in.
I'd rather hire him as HC and bring on Mike Shula to be asst. HC and OC to be groomed to take over. I don't understand what people think is so great about Campbell.
"But then reality set in. Coughlin, like Shula, Belichick and other experienced, successful head coaches, would not consider coming to an NFL team without having complete control of Football Operations." This is why we get stuck with the Philbin's of the world
Dont want him. While he has in the past done well with the Giants, they have looked pretty bad recently and that's with him in control. In Miami he would be tied with a worse team and an new established GM that might not think anything along the lines of his causing a talent / scheme issue.
I read somewhere there was an excuse for that and it sounded valid. I think it was them blowing leads in the 4th quarter.
My god... Some fans just live in the past and can't let go..... Like the people still whining about Ireland.... The organizational structure was obviously whack, but with the hiring of Tannenbaum things are clearly falling into place. Maybe you don't like Ross, Tannenbaum, etc. But the entire front office has just been clean swept and some are still whining about how it was.
That isn't happening, as soon as the new coach is hired Campbell will be looking for s TE coach position somewhere else. Probably Buffalo since Rexy has a man crush on him.
You guys act like it's ridiculous for me to continue to worry about the organization structure in Miami. I would contend that it's ridiculous for you to assume it's all fixed based on nothing really changing except the GM. Especially when I read stuff like this: http://espn.go.com/blog/miami-dolph...sure-who-will-have-final-say-on-53-man-roster Yeah, yeah, I know. That depends on the coach. But this kind of uncertainty is exactly what will scare the top applicants away. And that is Larry's whole point. But that's ok, you guys keep right on thinking everything is fine. As for me, I'm done having blind faith in the Dolphins front office. I'll assume it's still broken until the results on the field suggest otherwise.
The head coach should ALWAYS have final say on the 53 man roster. Otherwise why even have a head coach?
True. Worth mentioning that Tom Coughlin did not have final say on the 53 either. (Edit: Even though you did earlier.) How many coaches actually do have final say? I'm guessing a half dozen?
I'm not sure, but the HC having all the power is an idea that is/has been fading, so I would say you're probably right in the ballpark, could be even less.
For those interested searching came up with Bill Belichick, Lovie Smith, Pete Carroll, Dan Quinn, Jack Del Rio, and Jeff Fisher. Probably not complete, but close. Recent coaches with final say are Mike Shanahan and Chip Kelly.
I would be happy with Coughlin if he were ten years younger.. But thats not the case.. Now would i rather have him or Tannebaum running the football operations? Ill take coughlin in a heartbeat. He can have a Parcells effect and fix our offensive line in one offseason.. And perhaps actually keep it strong this time instead of sending off Smiley and Grover without replacing them, creating holes..
For the first time, in I don't know... Maybe ever.... The director chooses his GM and then coach. This after years of changing one but not the other... I.e. Forcing people to work with and/or against each other, etc. the " organizational structure " has been surely flawed in the past. We all know this. But you can't deny that the source of those problems are gone and Ross has stepped back, deferred to Tannenbaum. This is his personnel dept, and he will construct the coaching staff in cooperation with his choice of HC. I'm not even a fan of Ross or Tannenbaum... But it's obvious they are finally going about this the right way. As for final say of roster being up in the air... Did you really expect them to announce otherwise before luring a coach ? They're not looking for another Sparano/Philbin... The idea is to get an experienced HC.
Well, you were right about that half dozen, at least for a couple minutes, then Lovie got fired, lol, but the point remains, they are few.
