Funny, I remember reading lots of posts last year on how Miami needs to pass more inside the five.

They need a balance. Last year it was all run, this year all pass. You have to prove you can do one for the other to be effective. We haven't proven we can do either.

Hardkore we're seventh in the league in rushing. At the goal-line maybe we don't run enough, but the balance isn't bad. The line is.

I know the run-blocking inside the Red Zone has been horrible, but now that Thomas has proven to be pretty capable of running between the tackles, I think they need to go with him a little more down there. If I never see another fade from Chad Henne for the rest of my life I'll be happy.

Long is clearly still hurting and our Center is showing promise but is a rook so growing pains are to be expected.

Meh...

You have to understand that Larry Little comes from an entirely different era in the NFL.
Passing the ball inside the 5 can be VERY effective if the right play is called at the right time.
I think we can all agree on that.
It's nice to know that you don't HAVE to pass at the 5 yard line to get it into the endzone because your line can't push however. That being said I think our line is better at run blocking than they are at pass protection.
Straight push they can pull off. Get them trying to defend against pass rushers in space or read blitzes quickly enough to defend it is a whole nother issue.

 

Sure they are. Ben Tate has 22 rushes out of I-formation this year, 34 out of single back formations, and 3 out of shotgun. Not their primary formation, but the Texans use a decent amount of I-formation.

 

Wait a minute what the heck does him running out of single back have anything to do with I-formation? Since you have the stats on hand do you know how many YPC Tate hasn't gotten out of I-Form versus every other formation including 2-TE, 3 WRs.

 

To be fair Little had Csonka ,Kiick and Morris to run in those close redzone ones plus the OL to make the holes for them consistently.

He is right about this OL though.A lot of resources used on the current OL without much to show for it.

That 72 OL were made up mostly from scrubs cut from other teams who were molded into an oustanding OL.

 

doesn't make it right though Dup..if your ever at the 2 or 1 yard line you do what we did in the preseason {even though it took us 4 chances}, you run it in, or you don't deserve to win..The effect of passing in those situations are far more damaging then not being able to get in..

So far Ive seen daboll with questionable playcalling in those situations, and the last drive in cleveland.

 

I wasn't trying to prove anything. I was just pointing out that Houston runs a fair amount out of I-Formation in comparison to other formations.

In regards to Tate, his YPC is lower out of I-formation. But its hard to make any judgement, as there are obviously the down, distance, and time remaining factors.

 

All true, different era, different players different defenses and offenses. Love all the old timers but if most of them played these days they are the ones that would be lost in the woods. During his time they had about 3 different blocking assignments compared to what Oline have to do these days. Offensive lineman during his time could hold, punch, kick, bite, step on toes etc. Most of them would lose their entire game checks these days just to fines secured from penalties.

Most of the more successful teams these days all pass the ball inside the 5 yards line. Its all timing patterns or to the corners thrown if the recevier does not get it, no one will. I see that as a problem with us. As of yet, Henne and his receivers do not have the timing down and to be fair, there have been drops and to be even more impartial, Henne does not have the best touch on the ball figured out yet.

But throw inside the 5 ? Oh, yeah, plenty of teams do it. Quick hit timing patterns are hard to stop if the receiver and the QB are on the same page and the receiver actually holds onto the ball. Meaning, Marshal in particular.

 

Not to defend our OL, but everybody in the NFL passes the ball inside the 5 now. It's freaking hard to just ram it down a defense's throat down there if there isn't at least the threat of throwing the football.

 

Ignore them its a slow week for the media. They are scrounging around the bottom of the barrel dragging up anyone they can from past teams. Its actually comical to say the least. Pretty soon they will dig up Mercury Morris from somewhere and we can listen to how great he is and how all the teams have sucked since he left and how great he is and look at his 20 year old suit and how great he is and the entire world blowws but him. LMAO. sad.

 

They also had one of the best offensive line coaches ever in Monte Clark.

Larry Little was cut by the Chargers before Miami. Jim Langer was cut by Cleveland before Miami. I think Bob Kuchenberg was an UDFA.

hey have you guys read anythin that Jim Jensen has been saying on facebook? he is pissed at the front office for letting ronnie and ricky go after Sparano said we were going to a finese running attack. then he turns around and says we are running the old style of running which means we switched our running back for nothing basicly. thomas is good but why bring in bush for a run game that isnt Bush 's strong point. other former dolphin players are fed up with this club too.

 

Ireland has dug his own grave with some of the puzzling moves or lack of moves made this offseason.
The RB position being one of them. Good to see others acknowledging this now.

Not only are the moves questionable but the coaching staff and GM also appear to be on different pages of what kind of team they want to build.
You get the feeling even if good personnel moves were made that the coaching staff would misuse the talent anyway.
Dysfunctional is the only way to describe it.

 

Hard to really say we didn't make good personel moves and they aren't being used correctly. If Thomas would run the way he has and we used Bush like he was in NO, our RBs would be our most productive and explosive part of the roster.

 

We really could use Ronnie Brown's 2.3 YPC this year.

 

Exactly. We may have not made the BEST running back moves, but letting Ronnie and Ricky go was 100% the right choice.

 

Ronnie and Ricky were descending in their play rapidly...We have a much better situation now with the combination of Thomas and Bush...Not sure why this decision is being questioned anymore....Would you swap our combo for ricky and ronnie knowing what you know now?

 

So I guess Larry wouldn't have been on board with that whole Dan Marino thing.

 

You would think he has dug his own grave. However, Jeff is very coniving when it comes to things. He's going to twist this around in an attempt to save his job. His got his nose planted firmly in Stephen Ross's rear end right now, and at the end of the year, he's likely going to tell Ross that it was his plan to give him a wide open, exciting, spread type of offense and that Tony simply used the players he brought in correctly.
