Since drafting Jim Kiick in the fifth round 40 years ago, the Dolphins have had little success with late-round running backs.

The new regime of Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells and General Manager Jeff Ireland is attempting to buck that trend with sixth-round running backs Jalen Parmele (No. 176) and Lex Hilliard (204).

The Dolphins are counting on Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams to share most of the workload, but their potential backups looked sharp at last weekend's rookie minicamp, particularly the 5-foot-11, 225-pound Parmele, who displayed a good burst off the line.

"I tried to run like Ricky because he ran with power," said Parmele, who gained 1,511 yards (5.5 per carry) with 14 touchdowns his senior season at Toledo. "I expect to learn from both of them and improve from them."

Ahh...we can only hope. But with the tenuous situation our running backs are in, these two guys may get more of an opportunity than normal. We don't know how the rehab will be with RB. He tore the ACL in week 7 of last season, meaning that he may not be 100% until after the season starts. RW is well....RW....we don't know whether he'll be able to return to the form that we saw him in '05 or last year where he obviously wasn't in good football shape. Has he lost the edge as a runner ?? Will he go Outback on us again ?? These things we don't know...

With that said, Parmele and Hilliard will get an unusual opportunity to show they can cut the mustard...But at this point and with the little we've seen, does anyone really have a lot of hope that they can impact our situation this year ?? Who knows...

We need to be very careful not to rush Ronnie back before we're sure he is 1005 fully recovered, so these two should get a few chances early on next season. Would be nice if one or both turned into good RB's for us. Isn't Hilliard slated more as a FB though?
