Dustin Keller completed his physical, and will stay in Miami overnight and continue his visit with the Dolphins on Thursday, March 14th. Hopefully this is a sign a deal is very near.
and Jake Long hasn't left St Louis.. funny how these red flag injury players take a little longer to go thru the process.
Still think people are overrating Dustin Keller a little bit but what are ya gonna do. The best tight end of the free agent class is gone.
No the best TE of the FA class is the one we have staying in Miami. Jared Cook may be more talented but hes still the same lazy player he was as a freshman at South Carolina.
Keller was my first choice at TE all along, but I wouldn't consider him more than a stopgap for a couple of seasons.
He was talking about Bennett, I think. I don't like any of the 3 as much as others did. Bennett was probably the best but he's nothing special, IMO. I'm not too upset we missed out on him. Keller is better than I thought but I don't know if I want us signing him. He's a very bad blocking Tight End. And what would it mean for Clay if we did bring him in? Cook is all potential at this point. My favorite Tight End option overall is Travis Kelce. I'm hoping we come out of the draft with him.
Yeah. Even if signed, I don't think it changes any plans Miami may have had at the tight end position in the draft. Still a lot of smoke around Gavin Escobar, IMO.
Ehhh I thought he meant cook but Bennett imo is on the same level as Keller...you give him a Qb and he produces but I think Keller is more agile and a better receiver. Bennett really struggles to get his hips turned up the field after the catch. Cant tell you how many times last year Eli threw a good pass and Bennett tripped over his own two feet in space. Bennett also cant make players miss in space and Keller can. Bennett is a better blocker though. Eifert to me is the best TE option by a long distance. Kelce would be my second choice there as I actually like him more then Ertz.
From what I've seen on the coaches tape I don't know that I buy the argument that Keller was so hampered by Mark Sanchez. Sanchez leaned on him, and he threw to him over the middle of the field fearlessly. Too fearlessly at times. Martellus Bennett was definitely the best tight end on tape and it's not really close. I know one thing. I have zero interest in Brandon Myers. Zero.
I still like Fred Davis, and as I've said before if the Dolphins would keep their minds open to a veteran then Ben Watson wouldn't be a bad way to go. He doesn't get off the line quite as well anymore or have as much short area explosiveness, but he can still run, it's very evident on the tape, and he's got hands and the ability to make tough catches. But if the Dolphins are going to go that route with a veteran I think they may pursue Dallas Clark who has a close relationship with Philbin. That would be fine by me.
Martellus also dropped quite a few easy passes. I'm just going from the 4 or 5 Giants games I watched (family are all Giants fans, PLUS I had Bennett on my fantasy team), so maybe some isolated incidents left a negative impression. Gonzo was the best if you want to get technical, but after that, I agree--Bennett. It's absurd how little money he got; less than Fasano, I believe. 100% with you on Meyers.
I wanted to draft Fred Davis when he came out, and would take him over Keller in a heartbeat.folks have me worried about that Achilles, and I want Eifert real bad, but if I knew they are only adding one tight end thru free agency, and not the draft, then I would of been after Davis the whole time..
THe best tight end was above average though, and not really great... plus he was WAY overpaid. [edit: whoops, I thought you meant Cook. hahahaaaaaa!] I think you sign Keller for peace of mind as you enter the draft and act as if you didn't sign him, and still try to get your long-term #1 TE. Sign Keller to a one year deal, or if he is unwilling to take that, a short enough deal that you could cut him in a year or two, or at least make him the #2 TE as your own draftee improves. Imagine Keller with Kelce behind him in 2013. Then Keller leaves and Kelce takes over in 2014, or they simply swap #1 and #2 spots in 2014. What you don;t want, is to go into the draft HOPING to get a starting TE and needing to make moves like reaching, or giving up too much in a trade to move up to get one.
Zero is, at least, better than a negative number. So you could say you are apathetic about it, not caring one way or the other, then?
Keller will be a more than satisfactory stop gap. Dude can play. We are likely drafting someone early and Eggng is still here.
I don't think the gap between Bennett-Cook-Keller is that significant. If Keller can stay healthy, he'll be a valuable part of this offense. I worry a little bit about our run blocking suffering without Fasano, but our passing game should improve. Wondering if we can't still pickup someone like Ben Watson as our 2nd TE.
Not for the 2nd round pick. I like their other tight end from Oregon I believe, Hickman. He would require a 3rd round pick.
I notice no one is bringing up the name of Egnew in this discussion on the TE position. Ireland recently stated he expects big things from Egnew this coming season. Unfortunately the only big thing I expect from Egnew is his big departure from the Dolphins before the preseason is over. I will be very surprised if Egnew is still on the roster when the 2013 regular season begins.
...which is why no one brought his name up. If you feel that way, what's the point of bringing him into the discussion?
My lasting memories of Keller are all of Y. Bell being unable to cover him ... ever! Wish Bell had stayed w/ the Jets, would've been fun to watch.
Because he was drafted just last year and he is the one true TE still on the roster since Fasano signed with the Chiefs. Perhaps Ireland really feels that Egnew is the long term answer at the TE position and he has no interest in drafting a TE in this years draft. Perhaps he only wants to bring in a veteran TE as protection, in case Egnew doesn't work out. I don't think Egnew is the answer, but if Ireland does, perhaps the drafting of a top TE in this years draft isn't a priority for him. It appears a lot of people on here (including me), think TE should be a major priority in the draft, but maybe Ireland feels differently if he truly thinks Egnew is the long term answer at that position.
I doubt Irish thinks Egnew is the answer. I just don't think he expected anyone to offer Fasano so much and for him to go that fast. Think he got caught with his pants down.
You don't bring in the highest ranked TE in the FA class just incase a 3rd round pick works out. They are looking for a new starter. Egnew would be the surprise, eventual successor to whoever we bring in.
I understand why they are looking at a veteran TE to sign in free agency. I just think Eifert will turn out to be better than any of these free agent TE's. I just don't think that Ireland will have TE as a priority in the draft if he signs an average FA TE and he really believes Egnew is the long term answer at the position. I think this would be a mistake, since I think Egnew will be a bust. Perhaps Ireland only stated that he expects big things from Egnew in 2013 to throw us all off his real desire to take Eifert in the first round. I certainly hope that is the case.
I guess you missed the days before sanchez and the jets offense regressed and Keller was probably his favorite target... Guy can catch some big passes. Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
