Because of his size, even as a youngster, Odrick never got to play midget football. He was simply too big. So he turned to basketball and began developing into a pretty good player. Until he reached eighth grade.

Odrick was about 6-2 when he was in eighth grade and still growing, and not just physically. He was also maturing, a fact that became evident when, angered by a critique, he announced he was quitting the football team and walked out. He later repented and approached Norman about rejoining the team.
Norman said he could, but only if he apologized to the rest of the team and did some additional conditioning workouts. Odrick immediately complied, completing one conditioning workout in a manner that impressed the coaching staff.
