Why are we always worried about who the Patriots draft every year? Its not like every draft pick they've selected develops into instant Pro Bowlers. Bellichick doesn't have a good track record in the draft as of late. Stop worrying about who other teamsa might draft, that always seems to set ourselves up for a bad pick.

 

I hear the Pats were going to draft Vernon Carey, good thing we got him when we did!

Yeah and that led to us not drafting Wilfork and Carey took like 3-4 years to find his niche on the OL.

 

Patriots have to many needs on the defensive side of the ball.Just read the Pats forums and you'll see
outside linebacker and defensive end are two huge needs Pat fans feel they will address early and often.

I've just listed the players who had any sort of impact on the team; even on "bad draft years" where they were only able to get one guy out of it, they really hit. Tom Brady (Hall of Fame), Deion Branch (Superbowl MVP), Steven Gostkowski (Pro Bowl), Brandon Meriwether (Pro Bowl), Jerod Mayo (Pro Bowl).

Not only are the Patriots excellent drafters/pick managers, they've been getting better in recent years.

 

By the same token, there's no telling had we drafted any of those players that they wouldve turned out to be productive for us, considering we've cut our own players who have gone on to have productive careers on the Patriots and other teams. Its not necessarily that Bellichick's drafting is overrated which it is a little, its just that we dont develop players the way they do. So it makes no sense to be worried about who the Patriots draft because there's no garauntees we'll have the same results as they would when it comes to drafting players they target. IMO I think the Pats send out alot of false information(like other teams do) about who theyre targeting as if to set up other teams to draft a player so the Pats can get the guy they really want...see Vernon Carey/Vince Wilfork.

 

Yeah, I definitely agree that everyone has their own smokescreens, especially once you get out of the top three. No one ever really knows who the Patriots are going to draft A) because there's so much misinformation out there and B) because they're always moving their picks around.

As far as being a good drafter, I think it goes beyond just who ends up with you (even if that's the only thing that matters); it's also about pick management and secrecy, which Belichik certainly excels at. They may not draft as well as say... the Steelers... but if their on-field product is any indication, they're pretty darn good.

Back to your original post, I do agree that we need to worry about ourselves, but again, the Patriots are no slouches in April.

If I were in Dunkin Donuts, I wouldn't order the last Jelly donut just because my enemy behind me loves Jelly donuts. I'd get what I want.

 

Exactly, instead of drafting players because the Patriots MIGHT be targeting them we should going after players they we want that will fit in our systems on offense and defense. Drafting players who the Pats may have targeted has led us to drafting such players as Carey(solid but not spectacular), Ronnie Brown(Bellichick is a big fan), Ginn(it was said Bellichick was targeting a return specialist with speed since they planned on starting Welker), Pat White(because the Pats supposedly were going to implement the Wildcat in their offense)....its just not a good strategy.
