What do you think qualifies as younger? Under 50? Under 40? Could it be more to do with years on the job as OC than it is years of age?
I think ur too harsh on Sherman. Gibson was playing very well before he got hurt. Likewise, if Keller had not gotten hurt Clay would not be producing the way he is now. It's a sign of the depth we had at receiver not a sign of how the coaches aren't aware of who can do what.
Lets bump for this kid...I love talking about all the things he does, and how talented he is, the catch on the sideline where he periouttes in the air and comes down in bounds, all the other catches...noone dropped the football on Sunday, he was so freakin money he doesn't even know it.
No one has talked about it, but that diving catch he made on 3rd and 10 during the end of the first half was one of the bigger plays of the game. If he doesn't make a sensational catch, we punt the ball back to New England with over a minute to go already down 10-0 and with them getting the ball first to start the second half. The kid can play.
That catch along the sidelines on the final TD drive was pretty sweet too. He may be our #1 WR in 2 years.
Very sweet, did you catch 17 talking about that play? Said he made his mind up if he got a good release he was going to him , and he said he got off really well and ... we have a huge play. We made a lot of plays at pressure points, which is what it takes if we want to win consistently.
Of course, but that play has gotten plenty of attention. The catch at the end of the first half hasn't gotten any, and I'd argue that catch was bigger than the one on the final drive because that final drive might not have even mattered if not for that first catch.
He's learning a new position that reportedly isn't that easy to learn in this system..I trust that guys game man,I think I trust him as much as anyone.
Both that throw and the TD to Thigpen, did you notice how RT couldn't follow through because Jones had pushed McKinnie as close as possible to Ryan? Especially the TD to Thiggy. His hand hit McKinnie's shoulder after he released the ball. Pretty good accuracy from a really condensed pocket.
He said he couldn't see Thigpen on the throw , it was a really nice catch but the placement makes sense as 17 could not see the target on that throw. Made a LOT of plays ,he did.
Next year our 5 wide turns into Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews, and Clay. One of the better units in the league?
As much as I like Gibson, this is a business as well. All of his guaranteed money is paid as the end of this year....save the 6M remaining on the 2 years left and allocate it to another position like TE or OL...... Matthews is the 3rd WR going forward IMO....
Not to mention the team would rather Clay be more of a utility guy moving around. Which means they are still in the market for a solid blocking TE who can catch 30-40 balls unless they decide to keep grooming Sims.
Armon Binns was making quiet a lot of noise in training camp this year before his injury as well and if I remember correctly he is still under contract. Can't seem to remember if he played slot receiver though...
I don't know man, Gibson was playing really well before his injury and he and Tannehill seemed to have a lot of chemistry. I gues it depends how he progresses coming back from his injury, I think if he comes back strong we keep him. Wallace, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews and Clay would make up a top 5 receiving unit in the league IMO with Tannehill playing as well as he is and the OL improving.
Mathews saved our a$$es with that great catch. The offseason will be very interesting in terms of offensive skill players. Battle for the slot, a new TE to pair with Clay, ideally a legit feature back, what becomes of Thigpen if we do land a starting RB. Personally I'm a big fan of Gibson who seemed to pull through efficiently as a security blanket. The chemistry was there with Tannehill even when Tannehill was struggling to click consistently with other guys. Coming off injury though, of course. And both Gibson and Mathews could potentially play outside if needed, imo. I'd like to keep both. When was the last time we were this set at WR before the draft? But really at this point, I think Tannehill will make any pass-catcher look very good with the way he's playing right now. All about the QB.
I don't want to get my hopes up but I can't help but think Tannehill is going to be somewhat "Brady-ish" in the near future, receivers will come and go, and this guy will continue to perform.
Mathews development is pretty ahead of schedule for a 7th rounder. The dude is 24 years old. Adjusting to the speed of the NFL and working on his craft from the slot in his first season of consistent snaps. He can put those tools together and become an inside/outside threat without much of a problem. Victor Cruz (UDFA) emerged in the league in almost the exact same way.
Thats because if you think about it, Wallace and Hartline really weren't...Now that the guys getting the money are making the plays, I would love to see that loot get put back into the offense line. Imagine the year T-Hill would have if he had just a little more time.... Matthews is signed through 2015 costing just 1.2M total....that is over 4.5M in savings right there AND one more year of service to boot. Matthews with a little polish and responsibility will exceed Gibson....Ireland did well here....
It's a bit early to crown Matthews, I think. He's shown flashes of being a high quality player, but he disappears at times and there are stretches where he's on the field and isn't productive. That stands out in pretty big distinction to his competition in Brandon Gibson, who was quite productive relative to his time on the field. I imagine Gibson will go back to the primary slot guy on his return, and Matthews will get an expanded role as the primary substitute for all of the above.
Man... how did I forget about Binns??? We will be loaded next season. Imagine if we found a physical specimen like Gronk/Graham type to pair with Clay. Get the OL going, and you wouldn't require much from the D. Saying that, the D should improve as well. Lots of youth on this team.
No doubt he is way ahead of schedule. He just has some work to do. He could be a key in our red zone offense going forward due to his size and ability to make tough catches.
Lamar Miller is an all around running back that can block. He is 5th in the NFL among RBs at pass blocking efficiency, which is saying something considering the number of "holes" he's had to plug in the pass protection. He's also got pretty good hands (tied for 6th lowest drop rate among RBs) and can run after the catch. Not sure what more you can really ask from him. Yeah, his one drop on that wheel route early in the season was unfortunate, but that is his only drop all year. We have plenty at WR. And between Clay, Egnew and Sims, we have plenty of developing talent at TE.
There really is not that big a gap between Gibson and Matthews in terms of yards per pass route run. Gibson's is a little higher but not that much considering that Gibson is a veteran and Matthews is just a 2nd year guy.
I'd be very happy with Wallace, Hartline, Gibson and Matthews as our top four WRs. I'd look to add a Tavon Austin type as the 5th WR/KR. (I was never as high on Binns). That along with Clay and another TE like Keller or even a draft pick (2nd or 3rd round) would be a very good receiving corp.
That might be the case, but I'd still rather Matthews get time at the X and Z positions relatively extensively and get rid of Mike Wallace's bloated contract (which I know will not happen -- they will not admit the mistake there). I'd been a lot happier with a mix of Marvin Jones, Rishard Matthews, and Keenan Allen at receiver than spend the money we have spent on this position.
So your solution to the topic is to continue to cry about Mike Wallace?? Man I bet you stalked the hell out of your first GF.
