Nobody knows right now if Drew Stanton can perform at this level, but it's also that air of uncertainty that makes him Rod Marinelli's trump card this season. The Lions think they're a playoff team. Common sense suggests otherwise, and should the Lions once again live down to the general public's low expectations, Marinelli might replace Jon Kitna with Stanton as the starting quarterback. As much as Marinelli preaches about competing hard every snap, he has become a realist entering his third season as head coach. Such a move could buy Marinelli another season because nothing hypnotizes the Ford family and equally gullible Lions fans more than the nurturing of yet another untested quarterback. Stanton currently ranks third on the depth charts behind Dan Orlovsky, who played decently enough in his four possessions against the Giants.
