"Ran into Lions RB Kevin Smith during my morning workout. He's a restricted free agent and told me to tell the Dolphins: "Come get me."
How will Kevin Smith fit in our offense and who will he replace? Ricky or Ronnie?

I think he'd be a decent backup guy and should come fairly cheap. Something to consider especially if we go RB in the draft.

He would be a great pick-up for this team. He's definitely a guy that has a lot to offer even though he's been injured a lot. In 35 games he's accumulated over 2600 yards. He adds a dimension we haven't had in a long time as a receiver out of the backfield (91 for 824.) And he's put these numbers up in what has been an often times anemic offense in Detroit behind a shoddy o-line and with shaky QB play. I would absolutely love to see this guy in a Dolphins uniform next season. Unfortunately I can't see us giving up anything to detroit to compensate for the RFA tag. Now, if Detroit decides not to tender him, or if something changes with the CBA that you only need 3 years to acquire UFA status, maybe we'll end up with him. But I wouldn't hold your breath.

would be the biggest waste of a draft pick since....well the last time we totally wasted a draft pick - PW

He's not a big play back, which is what we really need. So I doubt he would be an option anyways

I've liked Kevin Smith for a while. As a rookie, I had him in Fantasy football so I followed him and watched games. 2009 was a bad year due to injury and Best came in lighting it up in 2010. He's a great receiver and pretty quick. A versatile guy like him would be good to have in the mold of Chester Taylor. We'd absolutely need another back though. Sort of like Pitt or Balt where they have situational backs. Maybe Mark Ingraham.

Then after getting hounded on Twitter about it, Smith tweeted that he is still under contract with the Lions and is focusing on his rehab. Methinks the Lions weren't too pleased.
-
He's got the same problem as Ronnie Brown. He's too injury prone, we don't need too see this same song and dance all over again. Sign Ahmad Bradshaw.
-
Dolphins to Smith, we will come get you... but dont think that we are going to make a habit out of giving you trips to the airport.
-
So... we're pretty sure Ricky won't be back after his comments, Ronnie gets bashed alot here for "dancing" and being injured, and we want to talk about bringing Kevin Smith here? Hell, has this guy EVER completed a full season in the NFL? Actually, he has, ONCE in 2008. Grrrrreat...

I dont see Kevin doing anything other than giving us more of what we had all last year (a lack of playmaking ability). I'd rather have Mike Tolbert as a #2 TBH.

If we are going for another teams backups I would rather have any of Michael Bush fr OAK, Slaton fr HOU, Brown fr IND, Ivory fr NOLA and then maybe Smith.

What is with this Lex Hilliard ****? He's not a good RB. I mean really, what has Lex Hilliard shown? As BAD as R&R were last year, Lex Hilliard didn't even get the chance to do anything. He's not a starting caliber RB. And I love on one hand, people bash Kevin Smith who I've watched and is a great RB and receiver as not being a home run hitter, then say, LETS START HILLIARD. The man crushes need to end. Kevin Smith is a MUCH better player than Lex Hilliard. And as for full healthy seasons, Kevin Smith has been in the league three years, played in 37 of 48 games and lost a spot to Jahvid Best.
He'd be coming here as a backup but make no mistake, He'd be ahead of Lex Hilliard on the Depth Chart. -
I think everyone misunderstood what I was saying.
The reason Lex hasn't started was due to the depth at the position. Ricky, Ronnie and Cobbs were all here when he got drafted so it only stands to reason that he'd be behind them in the line up. If you remember the huge depth at the RB position lead to us also cut Jalen Parmalee. Lex's benching was not due to a lack of talent but a glut of overall RB talent.

With R&R probably gone Lex will be running the ball (Cobbs is a specialty back). Kevin Smith has more primary experience at RB, and he'd be a welcome addition but Lex knows our system better, this would put Smith behind Lex in our system initially.
Everyone needs to relax out there. -

At the end of last year when Ronnie and Cobbs were both hurt and Ricky and Lex were playing RB I saw nothing from Lex Hilliard to make me feel confident in him as my starting running back. I'm not saying anyone else's opinion is wrong, but he just didn't pass the eye test for me. He had a strong OL to run behind and he just couldn't seem to find the holes, didn't have much burst that I saw, and wasn't physical enough when taking on blockers. Starting a running back with poor field vision who can't break away and can't run anyone over is going to get us to the Super Bowl?
