That might seem strange to anyone glancing at Billick’s resume because it’s impressive:
He coached the Ravens for nine years and won a Super Bowl in 2000-01. He put together a coaching staff that was a breeding ground for future head coaches such as Rex Ryan, Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan, Mike Smith and Jack Del Rio.
But Billick’s major problem has to do with the fact he unwittingly got off on very bad terms with Ross and this, like it or not, is Ross’s coach search.
Billick was not at his coaching best in 2007, when his team was 5-11, and that caught Ross’ attention because he was at the time negotiating to buy the Dolphins from Wayne Huizenga.
Billick had the misfortune of coaching the only team to lose to the otherwise-winless Dolphins. That loss came after Billick ordered a field goal with eight seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
He did this rather than try a fourth-and-goal play from the one-foot line that might have delivered Baltimore a victory after a long and dramatic last-minute drive.
The Ravens, decimated in the secondary, lost in overtime on a 64-yard pass to Greg Camarillo.
The next day, true story, Huizenga and Ross spoke and the seller informed the buyer that the team’s price had just gone up $40 million because, well, the victory made the Dolphins more valuable.
Ross balked and broke off negotiations until the sides returned to the bargaining table months later.
So Billick failed in using conservative strategy on the road against a winless team in a game to which his prospective future employer was paying close attention. And that questionable strategy cost Ross millions.
Amazingly, Billick met with Ross the following year while doing research for a book he was writing. Before shaking Billick’s hand, Ross told him, “You owe me $40 million!”
The meeting went downhill from there.
Billick, apparently unaware Ross was only half-kidding, used the quote as the title for his book’s first chapter.
Billick recently told The Miami Herald he thinks Ross to be “very impressive” based on that 2008 meeting.
Ross, judging the failed strategy, the poor meeting and other data, is said to not share the sentiment. That’s why Billick isn’t getting the Dolphins’ job.
And for the Dolphins, that’s logical.''...

Aqua I halfway agree with you on Billick Yet Billick has had grea defense from time to time his Offense is less desirable then Wanny's offensee in fact I think Billick's closed mindedness may have kept him from winning more superbowls. Fisher is better then what people will give him credit for and i think Jeff is very much a great choice and can be the very guy to get us out of the basement of the afc east..I still have not heard a reason for nobody thinking about Steve Marriuchi he may have faild in detroit but remember Matt Millon was the gm there.

Great read, and it makes sense. I'm glad to finally have somewhat of an answer as to why Billick isn't getting an interview. I'm imagining all the players and coaches I hate that cost me 20 bucks here and there betting on games. Billick cost Ross millions. That had to infuriate Ross. Whether it's an emotional decision rather than a smart decision, I kind of get it.

I understand the biggest problem with Billick is Billick. I think he's the best available coach out there, but it's telling that noone is talking to him.

Ross is lame if he really blames Billick for costing him an extra $40mil. Ross and HWayne had a deal already agreed upon, and after that game, Wayne bumped the price. Ross could have said no, and stood his ground. Wayne played him like a drum. He knew Ross was a motivated buyer. Ross should have known too that Wayne was an equally motivated seller and had he waited him out a little longer, the price would have likely reverted to what they had already agreed on.
Ross cost himself an extra $40mil. What if the Ravens would have gone for the TD on 4th and goal to win the game and failed? Would Ross also tell Billick he cost him an extra $40mil for not kicking the FG and taking the game to OT?
$40mil is a really big deal to 99% of us. To billionaire 1%ers like Wayne and Ross it's chump change.MAFishFan, Rocky Raccoon and FinSane like this. -
It's not the 40 million Mr C, it is that Billick's move allowed Wayne H to leverage him out of 40 million more, that will have pissed Ross off to no end (imo), add in Ross overpaid Wayne H for the Dolphins and when Ross sees Billick, he is reminded of that happening.
When it's said of Ross that he is a fan who owns his favorite team, I do think that is the truth of the matter, he just did not want to be ganked out of 40 million more for the team imo. -

Anyone who read Next Man Up by John Feinstein knows that as soon as Ross walked away after that meeting, Billick probably said "What a slapdick."

Other than for the simple reason Ross owns the team, and can hire, or more emphatically "not hire", whomever he pleases to coach it, 40 million in my book is enough to justify some personal lattitude, if he's still not entirely onboard with the idea of handing Billick the keys to it.
Fact is, we really don't know Ross's personal mindset, or why he's denying Billick, but from a character standpoint, and as the leading voice for the team, impo he would represent a downgrade from our previous standard.
This certainly isn't to suggest a belief he'd be any less successful than Fisher, or any other current prospect, or even that his particular style and approach, wouldn't be an exceptional fit. -

I know Billick has no chance of coming here but he just said something I really liked on NFL Network. All the talking heads were saying Mark Sanchez could still be the Jets QB of the future if team didn't ask him to "do too much". To which Billick replied ( and I'm paraphrasing a bit) "It's his 4th year in the league and you're saying the QB shouldn't be asked to do too much? In this league you need a QB who can put the team on his shoulders and win a game when things are tough."
Sounds like the guy who won a superbowl with Trent Dilfer and tried winning more with Kyle Boller has learned the value of the QB position. -
