That doesn't make any sense at all with five players who have started or been good quality nickel corners on the roster and other needs that are more outstanding.

 

That's not really a position of great need. I don't know why he's thinking Miami. I'm also still a little concerned Miami could have trouble signing highly sought FAs anyway after the Sparano offseason fiasco.

i see no justification for Ireland to get involved with this one. don't get me wrong, the defensive side of the ball isn't 'set' .... but what we need is a ball hawking, play making S -- even if Asomugha is the best CB in football (which i don't think he is) ....

 

CB may not be our biggest need, but it's mighty tough not to go after an elite corner like Aso if they can do so.

Well, keep in mind that Champ Bailey will be on the market as well, it is rare to have two shutdown corner backs in the same FA period, but there they both are, but still we need more guys who can rush the passer organically rather than 4 cover corners imo anyway.

True, but our weakness was youth and lack of a pass rush from the linebackers not poor coverage.

This would be a great move. Davis and Asomugha opposite of each other? That would just be money.

 

I have no issues with it if they do go after him. As for cap space ... who knows what the cap will be like when and if they ever get a new agreement. They may agree to some sort of letting teams spread old, cap restricting bonuses out over a couple of seasons or allow teams to remove one bad contract off the books to give them more freedom. Plus the rookie wage scale could free up a lot of cap space going forward if that is agreed upon.

If there’s a free agency, and Asomugha actually wants to be here—as opposed to just wanting to get the highest amount of money—then we should be able to find a place for him. Cut Benny Sapp or trade Will Allen (perhaps in a package for Carolina’s #1 overall pick?)

The quickest way to the Super Bowl is by taking our defense from good..... to great. I'm all for Nnamdi.

Despite how many of us fans are fond of Vontae & SS, we presently have no elite players in our secondary. And if Bell's age shows through even more, then we'll need even better play to counter it. If Nnamdi were on this team last year, we're possibly in the playoffs. SS & Vontae are not reliable "yet"; Clemons & Bell are NOT playmakers in the secondary; and still-developing Carroll is NOT a reason to keep us from going after an elite defensive player.

NE had 25 INTs. Their rookie Pro Bowler, McCourtney had 7 alone. That's 2 more than all our CBs combined. Despite showing potential, our secondary is NOT a team strength. It might be in the future (with "might" being the operative word), but it isn't right now.

Sapp is a temporary stop gap. Allen is a giant question mark due to his health...... so that leaves us with 3 CBs with potential, none of which have proven 100% reliable yet. The Jets secondary w/o Revis is still better than ours, yet some of us think it's a bad idea to go after Nnamdi?

Our strong defensive front 7 is not enough to carry this team to the promise land..... and if Bell goes down, our secondary's future revolves around 3 guys with 2 years of experience (Davis, SS, Clemsons) and 2 guys with 1 year of experience (Jones, Carroll). A veteran starter would be greatly beneficial.

Sorry, but making one's team better at an area that was a sore spot is not a luxury. If we re-sign Soliai & Incognito, draft well offensively, and in FA add Nnamdi, a #1 RB, & 1 other upgrade on offense at either TE or #2 WR, then we're going to the playoffs.

 

Nnamdi Asomugha changes the game, period. He has a Revis like ability to cover opposing #1 WRs w/o safety help. That affords a tremendous amount of flexibility in terms of coverages, blitzed and using safeties n run support and underneath coverage. He can play left or right, zone or man, inside or outside, he can do it all. He's a great locker room guy, great community guy, great player, can be a mentor for the young CBs we have. Wouldn't say we need him, but you cant argue that he wouldn't be a tremendous addition.

 

Sure, why not.... then we can grab Patrick Peterson to play FS, and all of a sudden we have the best defense in the NFL. :shifty:

I would at least give it a look. We already have an elite run defense. Though speaking of that I would make resigning Soliai the highest priority. But if you think Asomugha would also give us an elite pass defense would it be worth it to pair him with Davis and move Smith around like we did a lot last season?

The point of trading up would be to get a quarterback. Cam Newton, primarily.

 

I was just joking around, but to be honest, us having a dominant defense consisting of our current group combined with Nnamdi & Peterson would "probability wise" make us better (and sooner) than what Cam would most likely accomplish. I'd much rather have a virtually guaranteed, dominant defense with a "low risk" elite prospect like Peterson than a higher bust potential QB like Newton.

If we trade up for Newton & he busts, then where are we? If we hypothetically trade up for Peterson (or Von Miller) and our defense becomes the best in the NFL (which is more likely to happen), where does that put us despite not having a franchise QB? I'd rather go with having an elite defense. Then we could trade up in 2012 if needed to grab a QB who is more deserving of the "franchise" label and is more NFL ready.

 

I think anytime you have an opportunity to try and sign a guy who is top 3 at his position, you at least explore it. As for the defense, I think free safety remains relatively unresolved (Reshad Jones strikes me as a SS), we could use another rush OLB and ILB, and NT could be upgraded through some decent possibilities in this draft. Hit on all those, and I think you have an elite defense in Miami.

That's basically one more draft. I'd prefer to go defense heavy and leave the offense for another year.

Of course, that's because I believe Ireland is below average at evaluating offensive players.

 

How do we have a lot of cap space? I'm just going to assume the salary cap is going to be around $130-135mil. I don't see how we would be able to sign Nmandi for roughly 15-16mil and still have room to fill out the roster. Obviously, I wouldn't mind it if we could make it happen, but I just don't see how it could happen.

Plus, this would mean that we would need to focus all of our offensive needs in the draft. That means no DeAngelo, none of the top flight WRs in FA, no Carl Nicks, etc...We have probably 5-6 needs on offense alone. Do you guys think we would be able to fill in all those needs in the draft?

I don't know what the salary cap would be exactly and I don't know where we stand as of now, but I would initially think that we don't have a ton of cap space. Also, we still have a shiit ton of needs to fill on offense. Maybe we need to hire Pat Riley so he can make everything work.

 

I'm all for it but only after they use some of their cap on Waker, Solai, and maybe Mac.

I'd much rather they put some FA money on the Defense than going after big named lineman who don't pan out. The only offensive player I'd want, other than maybe Mankins, would be a fast Wr like Holmes. Use the draft to shore up the Running game. Lineman lineman and a stud Runner and to me there are a few decent Rb's in this class..

 

I dont care how good he is, hes 30, and if he wants that kind of money I would look elsewhere.

 

Low risk/High reward investment, what's not to like?

Like others have said, he greatly impacts how teams can attack us. He's worth the $$$.

I also like how he's quietly the best at his position.
