I think that's mostly because you see much more of this team. But that's just my opinion. I mean, maybe we are in a group that would be among the worst shape, but I don't think there'd be much separation between 20-25ish teams who were put in that position.
Isolating LT I think until Martin shows improvement it's hard to imagine a worst situation considering our backup is a rookie playing out of position. Good news is they are young and CAN improve.
Maybe, but what he originally posted was very, very true of a lot of people on this and other boards...
No doubt. But, I think other teams may be better equipped to handle it than a raw Dallas Thomas. He needs a lot of seasoning. Personally, I'd feel more comfortable with Nate Garner over there (or even Clabo and Garner getting the RT slot) than Thomas. It's not just the issue of technique - Dallas is super raw and not strong enough at this point, imo. But, that's not a concern as long as Martin stays healthy. Martin is a concern. But, it will really be game #3 or #4 that will tell a different story. The positive is we have an extra week and game over other teams to work through some things. We could conceivable use both games 3 and 4 as significant tuneups for the regular season (and then leave game #5 for evaluating the final roster positions). That could turn out to be a big bonus for a team with so many young, raw and new players.
If Jon Martin plays as well as Marshall Newhouse that would be a big win. So far he hasn't been close to Newhouse' level. Hopefully he gets there.
I though Jon Martin put a nice plus in the plus column with his run blocking last night. Unfortunately his pass protection against a depth player like Kyle Wilber was not good. Martin was only in there for 6 pass snaps, two of them 3rd downs, and he got beaten pretty clean for a pressure on one of the 3rd downs, and the other 3rd down Ryan Tannehill released the ball in less than 2.0 seconds but if he'd held the ball the NFL average amount of time (~2.75 seconds) he would've been pressured by Kyle Wilber who had taken Martin so far back and to the quarterback that he was within arm's reach of swiping at Tannehill. Whether you call that pass protection performance "bad" or not is discretionary. But considering the average NFL tackle allows a pressure play once every 14 tries against starter caliber players...I certainly don't know who would be tempted to check it off into the "good" column. Needs to do a lot of work over the next three preseason games to give people confidence in him. And I don't mean fans. I mean his own team.
I'm on the fence. I don't feel like LT is THAT important. However, I don't think he's good enough either. Unfortunately, we won't know the effect it has on W/L until the season progresses.
Are there analysts bashing Martin today? They should've already been bashing him. Maybe the game last night just gives them an excuse to bring it up as a topic?
I can understand thinking it is a mistake, that is an acceptable opinion - but "huge" I just can't agree with right now. "Huge" would be drafting a bust, or a guy who makes no sense. Jordan makes sense, and thus far has shown nothing but flashes of brilliance.
I saw Barry Jackson bring up Jon Martin saying after the game that he thought he played well. Barry then went on to point out that Martin was beaten badly by Kyle Wilber on one pass play.
Well, to me Martin did what he did during TC, basically getting beaten by everyone from the ball girl to some guy with a walker, Thomas did not really impress either but I do think the Staff has to give Martin some competition if this continues. When the Kyle Wilbur's of the league are smacking around your LT, you have a problem that needs to be dealt with ASAP. My god, Demarcus Ware would have broken Derrick Thomas's single game sack record
I would hurry up and sign Winston Justice before the Packers do. Why not?????????? He led the NFL in PBE through week 6 last year. Yes, he really did. Ya, he has 0 toughness and can't play with even the slightest ding but if he could repeat at LT what he did at RT last year it might give us a shot at winning a few games the first half of the season that we otherwise would not have. I would also sign Brandon Moore to play RG. I can't believe he is still out there. He is healthy and still playing at an elite level. Forget Jerry and the UDFA'a, and Dallas Thomas is going to need a year or two. Give Moore three years if that is what he wants. He hasn't missed a game in 8 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are people who are just going to age a lot later than most. London Fletcher,Favre, etc. I think Moore is one of those guys. Doesn't this look a lot better: Winston Justice LT..........Elite Pass Blocker when healthy. Richie Incognito LG...........2012 Pro Bowl Pouncey.........C..............Top 5 in the league Brandon Moore..RG..........All Pro, PFF's highest ranking free agent OG of 2013 Tyson Clabo RT...........Pro Bowler This OL would open holes for the RB's and give Tannehill time to make his reads. At least we would have a chance to have a good OL. Maybe Justice would have his first healthy year in the NFL; every dog has his day.
I just finished watching the 1st quarter but dear god two plays where Dallas Thomas looks like he was whiffing at a ghost.
And on at least one whiff, he exacerbated the problem by just standing and watching afterward instead of at least trying to get back in the play. The QB may step up, and you might still get a chance to provide a second more of protection, even if you missed the first time, if you don't just quit on the play.
He looked like he was outfitted with cement shoes. I understand this is the NFL and not college but it can't be that different. He was going up against Demarcus Ware or anyone.
Seems the forum's resident whiners have forgotten to complain about Martin this week. Ahhh, I see, they have Samuda to ***** about now.
You really believe Martin didnt deserve to be critiqued? He had a bad rookie year and a rough start to camp?
I like to imagine Clabo is Jake Long(same #) and that we moved Long to RT because he couldn't handle LT anymore. This way when I see Clabo Struggle with speed it just reminds me why we didn't keep him. Martin will do just fine at LT
Nope. Next week Jerry will come back or someone else will screw up and the whiners will forget all about Samuda.
A rough start to camp according to who? Omar, Armando? Those are the guys who were screaming about how Tannehill and Wallace couldn't connect. And by the way, where is the Wallace, D Thomas, B Grimes etc thread? All I see is people talkin about Samuda and Keller. Seems like people just want something to beeyatch about.
Yo, did you see grimes plant that foot and explode?... Damn man, that's what we've been missing for a long time..I think Jamar Taylor and he will be our future..very excited about Jamar Taylor..he freakin teased me like a beautiful baby.
@AdamHBeasley This will surprise you: The Dolphins' highest-rated lineman, through three preseason games, according to @PFF: Jonathan Martin. https://twitter.com/AdamHBeasley/status/369457355173265408 @AdamHBeasley Martin, Incognito and Pouncey all get above-average grades. Clabo gets an average grade. Samuda well below average, per @pff. https://twitter.com/AdamHBeasley/status/369457675249016832
