Matt Moore ranks 4th in Air Yards per attempt. He also gained most of his total passing yards from Air Yards. He ranked 2nd in that category, meaning he only got 36% of his yardage from his receiver's YAC.
This would seem to confirm what I saw, which is that he is fairly aggressive and accurate throwing downfield. But we should be careful to read too much into that since he didn't start the whole year and thus had fewer attempts than most starting QBs. It's possible that if given a whole season he would regress. Though having said that, I think I saw enough to say that these impressive stats aren't just a matter of small sample size. I think Moore was displaying a fairly honed skill.
I also think it's interesting that Aaron Rodgers tops the Air YPA list. His Air Yards % is a bit low at 53%. I think that's partly due to Green Bay's scheme. But having the best Air YPA suggests that even though they ran a WCO style offense, they still gave Rodgers opportunities to throw deep. So that begs the question, does Moore's ability to pass downfield match well with what Philbin will want to do offensively?
That's difficult to say. We don't know how similar Philbin's offense will be to the one they ran in GB. We don't even know if they will keep Moore around. But if we do decide to keep Moore I'm a bit encouraged about seeing him continue what he started this past season. What do you think? Could I be reading too much into this?

Interesting approach. Sounding somewhat similiar to "Net yardage" I searched the term, and found this article Net Yards per Snap with a few twists. Although this guy included scrambling yards, benefitting Vick or Tebow, not sure why Moore dropped considerably in the rankings compared to yours.

As for my negativity in the BM Pro Bowl thread...when I see him catching room service passes like the one from Rivers when under zero pressure, I reminisce back to some of the room service potential TDs he dropped this past season, when there was a team, his actual team, counting on him to come through in crunch time. Anyone who believes the ball placement was any worse on those regular season TD drops than it was today, is suffering from selective amnesia.gafinfan, Larryfinfan, muscle979 and 1 other person like this. -

Stat I'd like to see is # of sacks when the play 4 to 5 seconds as sometimes MMoore did hold onto the ball to long hoping something would open up down the field and then take the sack, from a stats pov a sack is a sack is a sack, reality is in a game there are instant pressure sacks, then coverage sacks and no one measures them
Big picture, to me there should be no reason for disquiet if Philbin feels Moore is the guy as you can see he can be a Top 5 Qb in the NFL in some categories, fans throwing a tantrum about a Qb should not effect his decision at all. -
Well, this goes back to what I was asking for in the Brees-Marino air yards debate that I posted. 1/2 of Brees's yards were YAC. Now I wish I could see what that number was for Marino back in 84.

IMO it makes sense for Moore to be high in this stat based on what I see from him. I think he is a very good deep ball passer. If you give him a clean pocket and time he can have a great deal of success. However, I don't see good accuracy from him in the short passing game. I think he forced our receivers to make some really difficult catches in the short range and I don't think his ball placement is good or conducive to YAC.
