Closet optimist. I think they saw Chad had gone as far as he can go for now and is a little too conservative in the nature dept. To get to the next level a team has to take chances, with Henne in there no chances are going to be ever taken. It all became all to apparent in the Balt game. Henne can manage a game but its a real conservative game. When Ed Reed came out in the media and basically said with Chad Henne in there, the Ravens did not have to take chances. They knew Henne would take the consevative approach and boy were they right on the ball. Something had to be done and the change was made. Now, is it permanent for the rest of the season ? All depends on how we compete the next two games.

If the players respond to the new spark injected and if Penny comes up with some big plays, you can bet Penny will be in there the rest of the season. The Baltimore game appeared as if they had a microphone in our huddle. Henne had 21 games of film the opposing teams had to look at and to be honest, they probably saw nothing of a threat in him. Balt. played a consevative offense and Henne did nothing to make them do anything else. Thats the way I see it anyway. I listened to Omar on the Michael Irvin show and then looked up Henne in his college days. Omar is right, Henne did not take all the talent that offense had and won no big games, took them to no big bowl games and had a winnning record but for the most part, did not put any big teams away in such a manner he could have with the talent he had around him.

I still say the same thing and am not changing my stance. Chad Henne is a great backup QB to have on your team. If the starter goes down, Henne will come in, run a routine offense and not take any chances and will manage the rest of the game well. It ends there though.

 

There were signs. The Parcells rumor about Henne not developing, Sparano taking forever to officially name Henne starter before the season and the biggest one - in my opinion - the re-signing of Chad Pennington, who just happened to be coming off his third shoulder surgery.

Then again, they had no intention of playing Henne at all last year until Penny got hurt.

 

Henne was "ok" when he played last year and "ok" this year.

A franchise QB should improve from "ok" to "good" in the second season starting. Henne never made that progression. All his stats are worthless when he wasn't leading the team to TD's. It's also pretty easy to have a nice completion percentage when you are checking down a ton and not taking shots down the field.

+ 1 BINGO. They had a good example of Henne. He has choices on the plays, Homerun, Triple Double Single. Henne is happy throwing the simple singles. Thats not a starting QB IMO. He is a great backup for someone though, great backup.

 

I don't disagree. But there have been plenty of guys who've had sophomore slumps. Matt Ryan's numbers were down in his second season and hell, Ben Roethlisberger's third year was the worst of his career.

 

Arizona fans knocked Wizenhunt when he chose Warner over Leinart in 2008 as the starter. The media could not understand it either. Matt Leinart was the future. The national media blasted the Cardinals for making the choice, laughed, said they were a Joke. All Warner did that year was lead them to the Super Bowl. After they won the NFC Championship game, people stopped laughing at them.

Warner would still be starting if he did not retire this year and believe me, the Cardinals miss him dearly. I do not care about age anymore. Its been beaten to death and its been proven, older guys , some of them, still have it. We have to see if Penny still has it.

 

Henne never had numbers UP THERE to be considered in a slump this year. They are basically the same as every game he started, flat line alll across the board.

 

Difference is Henne never had a single game or year as good as either of those guys. you can handle a slump if you've actually proven something.

both Ryan and Big Ben came out of the gate like gangbusters. Both have struggled from time to time since, but even at their worst, were always better than Henne

 

LOL yep, Ben tore it up his first year. I remember that NFL commercial where the guys says " Nice pick Cowher " meaning the fans were pissed he picked an unknown like Roethlissberg. Great commercial

 

Meh. With Warner, you were talking about for former MVP and a Super Bowl Champ. With Kurt, you know there was a chance (especially with those receivers) he had a chance to lead that team deep in the playoffs. That team was a QB away from the Super Bowl, this Dolphins team is not IMO. Penny was a very good QB, but not quite in the same class as Warner.

 

Kurt Warner was way better than Pennington though, you cannot compare the two. Warner had already lead one of the most potent offenses of ALL TIME and had a super bowl ring. He had the physical tools that Pennington never has.

A single game not as good? I think you're exaggerating slightly. Henne's had several excellent games. Check out his career numbers against the Jets.

 

I am comparing putting an older QB in there. You can all say yeah Kurt was this and that but you forget, he had gone to the Giants and played piss poor. The Cardinals mostly took him why ? As an experienced backup to tutor Matt Leinart. Not one person on the planet earth thought Kurt Warner would EVER come up with the last few years he came up with. Just sayin guys. Kurt Warner holds the NFL record for completion percentage, know who is number 2 ? Chad Pennington, thats good enough for me. I felt Henne was not the future before the season started, so what do we do, keep the guy in there for another 21 games ? Nah, yank him, see how it works and move on.

The two Jet games at home are his two best games. He was terrible in the Meadowlands last year.

The point is that he never put together a tretch of excellence either last year or this year that compares to what Ryan and Ben did in their respective rookie years.

 

You know anything about the Kurt Warner story ? You are right with what he did with the GSOT but, was cut by Martz because his play after that short time went into the dumps. Some blamed his hand injuries, some blamed the beating he took because Martz's system is insane for QBs

He landed at the Giants and did nothing. From 2003 until 2007 Warner was basically thought of as a washed up FORMER Super Bowl MVP and some were wondering why he was dragging out his now, miserable career, Thats 5 years in obscurity, washed up. In 2008 the man reinvented himself and yes, the national media even laughed at him. One crap mistake before halftime away from the washed up guy winning another super bowl. I know what you mean, Penny has never been there but just the same, benching Henne does not mean Penny is not going to do well. Watching Chad Henne had become as much fun as watching paint dry. Peopld do not buy tickets for paint drying events.

Maybe They annointed him the starter after they knew Penny would not be at 100 percent to start the season, they wanted to see what they had in the youngster, they have enough data at this point and time, still have a chance to make a run, and want to go back to how they originally won a division championship and 10 out of 11 games...Those memories must be pretty clear in their heads, and who knows, with the addition of Marshall, Henne just may of been the stopgap...

I think people are expecting Franchise top 10 pick treatment, when in all actuality, they passed on Henne when they had the chance to select him with their first 2nd round pick...that should tell you right there that he was not that high on the draft board...Its not gonna hurt this player to sit some.

 

I honestly think they have been waiting for penny to fully heal. Its been over a year and i think he feels like he is comfortable now.

The HUGE difference in Ben R. and Henne, in my mind anyway, is that Ben WAITS for the big play to come open while Henne SEEMS content to check down most plays.

Iam tellin ya'll, this benching has something to do with lack of emotion, inconsistent behavior pattern's, and lack of ability to motivate players on his unit, as much as it is anything else..

Maybe Henne is being taught a lesson..a lesson that Pennington can teach like a professor on the field. a lesson on how to motivate and lead men thru emotion..

Henne hasn't grasped how to do it yet.

 

You can blame Henne all you want but if this team can't run the ball or stop the run, call it a day.

I guess we should have seen it coming back in 2008 before we landed Penny. Henne hadn't stood out among the QBs we had at the time: Henne, Josh McCown, and John Beck. With competition that bad how do you not stand out? Even as a rookie? Im sure they had no intention of starting Henne in year one, but they weren't too confident in his abilities from that first training camp on.

Then came the Pat White pick. We saw Henne impress during the preseason previously, and figured when Penny retires he'd be the future. Then we draft Pat White and Ireland insists he drafted him to be a QB only, wasn't going to experiment with him at WR or RB. This puzzled everyone because we thought we already had our QB of the future to develop. Now they were going to focus on developing another QB, who didn't seem to fit their prototype for a QB. A player who most likely would just be in gimmick plays, a fixture in the Wildcat maybe. Of course we all know how that turned out, but it showed that the regimie was already looking at anotyher candidate to replace Penny. Then we trade for Thigpen, who already had starting experience with the Chiefs under his belt, adding to the competition.

Since they drafted him it never quite seemed like this regime was sold on his abilities. As much we hoped Henne was the future, it doesn't seem like this regime had much confidence in him, and IMO we're worse off because of it.

I love Penny but we had redzone issues with him at QB too. I know Marshall changes things a bit but I still think the offense is holding us back not who's behind center, because I still think Henne can be a solid QB, maybe not spectacular, but he could still be a starting quality QB. I guess just maybe not for this team.

 

I don't remember red zone issue with Pennington. At all really...

 

whether it was planned or not i dont care who is under center as long as they are helping getting us wins. there has been back and forth on this site but who do you guys think will have a better chance of getting us W's?

Im a Henne fan myself and hope he will one day develop to the franchise QB but if pennington is doing it right now ill take it....

 

With Henne under center you have 11 guys playing on our offense on the field but with Penny under center you have an offensive TEAM on the field. Will Henne "get" it by sitting and watching? I'm not gonna hold my breath.

As for the remark about turning Henne into Penny, how does one go about doing that? I'm reminded for the Morton/Staubach three year mess that Tom Landry put those two thru!
