I hope that people that post in this thread take the time to read the article. It should make every fan, regardless of team, proud of Hartline, what he endured and how he has played these first 4 weeks. Nothing to debate here.

    Brian Hartline's Appendix and Complications

Great story by Jeff Darlington here. Really provides all the details that were kept under wraps during training camp and preseason.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...o-become-nfls-leading-receiver?module=HP11_cp

His appendix ruptured and went gangrene on him. The medicine and complications led to a complete intestinal block where he couldn't even process the bile that was being produced into his stomach, had to have a tube down his throat to clear it out, was in the hospital 12 days. Doctor said to him something along the lines of there are some people that are out of the hospital in 1 or 2 days and then there are people that get the complications you're having and die. You're somewhere in between.

The calf strain he suffered in OTAs never properly healed because of the hospital stay where he lost 25 lbs over that 12 days. He re-injured it first day of camp. That's why it took so long to heal.

Said a week before the season he was only just starting to get "camp legs" that every player goes through, where your toe nails start falling off, etc. He's just getting his legs back under him from that.

Just one of those things you go through and have to come out the other side from.

I don't think it changes anything but it was kind of frustrating how little detail was out on what was going on with him during camp and everything.

I speculated his calf injury was a ruse to leverage a new contract. Boy, was I wrong.

Pretty amazing story. I'm glad everything turned around for him.

What's interesting is that Hard Knocks never covered any of it. I guess the Phins thought it was a privacy issue.

I'm wondering if that was Hartline's call. It was non-football related and it did say at one point he stopped having visitors. Maybe he was too freaked out for it to be in the media at the time?

Absolutely, and rightly so. Fan or not, pretend wanna-be GM or HC or what have you, definitely a privacy issue, and having your Mom sleep on a cot in your Hospital Room for 12days as tubes remove bile from your non-functioning intestines and stomach, defines the seriousness as well.

One thing Philbin has been pretty consistent about is being mum on injuries.

    True.

Would he be allowed to disclose a non football injury? Is that allowed?

Unbelievable..I stated in preseason when I saw him that he didn't look like he touched a weight all offseason, he looked withdrawn and weak, and for good reason...I couldn't see how he would be very productive..

But he did, It's amazing what he has done this season without be able to strengthen his body for the regular season..

This dude must be smart as hell..

Yeah, but how does that compare to Thomas' hammy injury. :shifty:

Good on Hartline. I was somewhat skeptical of the entire situation and didn't even fathom the severity, but a ruptured appendix is definitely no joke. Glad he is back, healthy, and kicking arse. Seems like he is dedicated to his craft and has a great work ethic to come back in the form he is. It is his contract year though.

No but the period of frustration was more training camp when he just continued to have the longest healing calf strain in the history of calf strains.

Ok. I was honestly not sure since medical issues get discussed all the time.

Come to think of it, the team said all they could. They told us about the calf injury and they told us he had a personal issue.

They couldn't tell us any more than they did about the appendix. But Brian himself did reveal it at some point. I think it might have been Biggane who called Philbin a liar because he labeled Hartline's problem a "personal issue" and not an injury. That was idiotic, IMO.

Yes, it was Brian Biggane, who is apparently jockeying for the vacant blowhard spot left open by Mike "Web Weekend" Berardino.

All players regardless of injury/illness sign a waiver of HIPPA rights, its part of the standard NFL contract so that Doctors and Athletic Trainers can report the injuries to the League and the league can then choose to report the injury/illness to the press. There is an official injury report sent out by the league on tuesdays, but there is a section for confidential injuries/illnesses.

They waive certain rights under HIPPA but not all of them, if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe the new CBA changed the HIPPA rights, but last i checked it was all rights except for a mental illness disclosure.

This sounds very similar to what happened to me. I was starting to wonder why I had a grapefruit sized lump in my lower belly. Long story short: My appendix was infecting my intestine and I had about a foot of it taken out and bear a scar from my pubic bone to my "belly button." I was in the hospital for about 6-7 days. Took me a good month to get somewhere back to normal routine.

Sounds like his was worse. Really bad

He only survived because the gangrene was more concerned about Reggie Bush's knee.

Thats a great article. Thats an example of great journalism as well. Shame most writers can't write stuff like this on a regular basis.

Quite the eye opener on Hartline too. Crazy what happened to him. Hope this great start for him continues.

Shows a lot of intestinal fortitude by Hartline with what he has accomplished so far. Its exciting to think of Tannehill throwing to Hartline for years to come in a Dolphins uniform. I guess Hartline is more of a weapon than anyone thought he was.
