6'3"/245. Good pass-catcher but raw at TE; kind of a 'tweener.

I'd like a TE to be a bit taller and I think this guy would be hard-pressed to be as prolific in the pros as he was in college at that height. That said, good 6th-round choice.

 

I hope the Dolphins realize they're allowed to draft both offensive and defensive players in the same draft.

 

Clay is a FB/TE hybird type of player. He will play HBack for Miami, which is a position that Brian Daboll has utilized in the past. This is a guy who will move around a lot and may even carry the ball at times.

 

I like them sticking to one side, so as not to get confused and draft pat white or pat turner after two solid defensive picks

With Odrick coming back, we'll have a pretty good rotation on the Dline. In fact, Mcd, Odrick, langford, soliai, starks, merling (i guess) we're great there. Wish there was another NT in there but thats easier said than done.

AJ Edds comes back so inside theres Dansby, Crowder, Dobbins and Edds. We could have used another OLB for sure but offense is definitely a bigger priority. And our secondary is very deep. Nolan Carroll at nickel, vd and smith as starters. Bell, Clemons, and Jones at safety.

On paper, there just isn't a lot of need there at all.

 

I was expecting Virgil Green with our 6th. I guess this guy fits the new system better? Does Daboll's offense utilize the hback a lot? I was surprised that we traded up to get him.

 

This guy can catch and move...he'll be a great h-back in miami. Physical, i love it.

 

The average size for a tight end in the NFL is about 6'3", 253 lbs. He's right there. He will never be an in line guy, but he will be a guy that can move around, line up in the backfield some, and flex out.

 

Brings a number of things to the table. Can run the ball like Polite, blocks better than a receiving TE, and he can actually catch the ****ing ball and do something with it. Not a bad player at all to have on the field.

 

Absolutely love the pick. I find it hard to picture him at FB. i see him as a hback or TE. Whatever he is, he is a great pick.

 

How fast is he? I know the time but he looks about as fast as a D.J. Williams.

 

Ran a 4.69 40 which was .09 slower than the fastest FB at the combine :up:

 

WOuldn't surprise me from this joke of an organization. Draft a FB who can't block when he should be playing TE. Draft a C who can't snap the ball when he should be playing G.

Sweet ... at least we know his speed is comparable to any of the FBs in the draft ... I like to use the combine #s though since its better for comparison against other players on identical track and conditions

Our defense is top-tier. Our offense sucks.

 

Disinterested blocker who would be an H-back in a west coast system.
Kind of a head scratcher that we would use Clay as a FB.

 

How many different forums are you going to post combine numbers like it means more than actual game tape of these guys? And you can't even get his combine 40 time right either.

 

He's basically a H-Back for Miami though. A far more capable player than Polite who can pretty much take on that role of a 2nd TE and FB, as well as flex outside. A good fit, somewhat like Chris Cooley except he can run the ball too. Really brings three different aspects to the game if you think about it, since he's a capable runner as well.

 

18 would be a weak number for his size. I can throw up 225 10 times and I weigh 180lbs. I love this selection though. Absolutely love it!! Can't wait to see what Daboll has in store for these offensive guys.

 

He's not really a disinterested blocker. If they can make David Martin block well they can make this guy block well.

He's about as fast as D.J. Williams except when he catches the ball you have a guy that was a RB not a TE. Think about that for a second.

 

this is a tremendous pick for us. high effort kid and a great teammate. He'll give us everything he's got. We could go from dual back formation on 1 play to going 5 wide the next with Clay & Daniel Thomas on the field. We should become MUCH harder to defend with this draft.

 

I know this wasn't the intent of your post, but...you want to shoot for average? That includes the dregs of the league; the Joey Haynos's of the world. There were still guys on the board with proto size, if not the total package you'd get in a higher round.

If they drafted him as a FB then that's good; as a TE he might struggle...a lot.

And I hate the use of H-Back in the pros. I hope they don't go that route with him.
