Yeah, but that was right after Dierdork was felating him for pancaking Abraham.

I have a really tough time with Dierdork myself, but I do like his analogy to Jake being a toddler. Just hard to remember cause he was rock solid last year and he is HUGE.
It will be very interesting to see how he fares against a very similar player in Freeney this week. I still think Jake is a really really solid player, but we will see how his learning curve is very quickly.

For the record, I am a little surprised Abe gave Jake the problems he did. Jake faces a very similar player in JT every practice

i think abraham offers a rare challenge to tackles. he has both strength and speed. usually its one or the other. thats what makes abraham one of the best. freeney is going to be all speed and should pose less of a challenge to long. of course his kind of speed is rough to handle so i'm not saying long is going to have a perfect day against him. but he's more one dimensional

Sorry, but I have to stick up for my fellow St. Louisan here. Dan Dierdorf, while not everyone's cup of tea, is a Hall of Fame player who is as well spoken as he is versed on football acumen. He offers a rare combination of raw perspective into the guts of the game (as a former lineman) and the ability to deliver it with intelligently crafted words.

    Boomer Esiason delivers drool.

    Shannon Sharp delivers drool.

    Brian Baldinger delivers drool.

    Let's not confuse the two.

    Au contraire, and with all due respect;

Boomer is fresh, well spoken and intelligent.

Dierdork is none of the above and is a jock slobberer. That is, he loves to slobber on the preferred jock repeatedly.

He single handedly makes me appreciate the MUTE button on my remote.

You have to keep in mind, that because of Dan Dierdorf's significant lisping problem, there literally has to be quite a bit of drool coming out of his mouth.

Personally I was more annoyed with his hard on for Gonzalez during that game. After one of his catches saying only, "Oh stop it. Stop it Tony." Ok, it might have been a nice play, but let's display a little more professionalism rather than hearing what amounts to nothing more than, "Oh no he din'nt."

I'm not so sure it will be less of a challenge. The only reason I say that is whilst Freeney doesn't have great strength, he does know how to dip his shoulder and run the arch. He's also a multi-dimensional pass rusher in my opinion as he has a dominant inside move. Its not a bulrush but it is the variety of spin moves. That dominant inside move will likely require Ronnie Brown and/or Ricky Williams to stay more in regular pass protection in my opinion because if Jake Long plays the speed rush with his hands to his hips region instead of the breast pad area then Freeney spins back inside and has a clear sack on Pennington. If a tailback is in there, he can chip Freeney back inside to Long and give more time for Pennington to throw.

I also think Pennington's timing will be a factor in this. He's got to get the ball out quick because once it is a 3rd down and say 5, those Colts pass rushers are going to pin their ears back and fire away.

The reason I say that is when you have a a combo rusher you never know which approach he's going to use so there's a bit of guessing involved. If you guess wrong its easy to get caught out of position. When you have a rusher who is either all brawn or all speed you pretty much know his approach so you can set up with less guess work. Having said that Freeney is exceptional so even knowing that he isnt going to bull you over isnt enough to prevent you from having a bad game

Big Jake should have the shadow of Anthony Fasano or Joey Haynos by his side, why risk the whole offense on a one on one match up?

We know how to roll with two TE formations, we should use them in this game.

I know many/most don't care for Dierdorf, but I think his viewpoint is valid. He knows the position and he knows the player. Granted, he may sticking up somewhat for a fellow Wolverine, but I tend to agree with his observations. Jake had a bad game against one of the better pass rushers in the league. Let's see how he rebounds.

Why didn't they do this this past Sunday? Or, did they and I just missed it?

I agree wholeheartedly. Pennington can't take more then 3-4 seconds make his read every time he drops back to pass. That's putting too much pressure on the Oline IMO. Make the read and get the ball out.

I can see what you're saying in the bold comment but I find Freeney to be exactly that, which is why I don't think it'll be any easier for Long this weekend. Freeney's not as strong as Abraham but he's much quicker and he's more...I want to say versatile because of his ability to spin back inside but I'm not sure that's the right word.

If he plays the speed rush then he could be set up just like he was against Abraham. Freeney gives three or four strong speed rushes and then the next play down, he explodes off the line and goes into a inside spin. As Conuficus (I think it was Con) pointed out in another thread, Jake's hand use is going to be very important in this game because of Freeney's game being revolved more around dipping his shoulder and running the arch very well. I think Freeney plays with better pad level when rushing parallel to the sidelines than John Abraham.

I'm not sure if they did or not but I've seen it work out pretty damn well. Last year in Chicago, I believe their left tackle John St. Clair - I think it was him or another guy who I can't remember right now - struggled with speed rushers and they had Matt Forte constantly stay in the backfield and chip the pass rusher back inside to the left tackle.

    Worked out very well.

I think maybe the word you're looking for is agile.......Freeney has some serious moves.

Jake's a tough, disciplined kid......I expect to at least see a hell of an effort from him Monday regardless of the outcome.

not exactly good news considering dispite them being one trick ponies and everyon ein the league knows it, they still post 22 sacks last season. Freeney has dominated some great tackles before.

Long has his hands full, theres no good news to facing dwight freeney on the passing plays..

I thought about agile or agility but I was looking for a word to describe his ability to get back into the play so quickly despite being rode by the blocker outside of the pocket on the speed rush and I'm not so sure that's the right word.

I didnt say it was going to be easy  What I'm trying to say (probably badly) is from a mental standpoint its easier if you're ready for one or the other. If I'm preparing against strength, I know I want to have a solid base and will get heavier in my stance. If I'm preparing for a speed rush I know I have to be light on my fight and I'm just trying to mirror his movements. When I'm not sure, I either hesitate to see what the DE does or guess and if I guess I could guess wrong and when you guess wrong thats when you get embarrassed
