Dolphins Sign Lydon Murtha; Waive Shawn Murphy Share Today at 5:46pm The Miami Dolphins have signed tackle Lydon Murtha from the practice squad of the Detroit Lions. To make room on the roster for Murtha, the Dolphins waived guard Shawn Murphy. The 6-7, 315-pound Murtha was born in Homestead, Florida and was a seventh-round draft choice of the Detroit Lions in the 2009 NFL draft out of the University of Nebraska. He was signed to the Lions practice squad on September 7 after being released by Detroit on September 5. At Nebraska, Murtha was a fixture on the Husker offensive line for all four seasons, starting 23 of 40 games. He was also a four-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection. Murphy was originally a fourth-round draft choice by Miami in the 2008 NFL draft. He was inactive for the first five games in 2009 and for all 16 games in 2008. This story was posted on the Dolphins Facebook page.

Ahh...perhaps the "no one has improved more than.." line from OTA's is the Sparano kiss o' death? Murtha was an athletic freak coming out of Nebraska but was really fragile 23 out of 40 games is not what anyone could call "durable".
Poaching a olineman from a disgrace of an oline like Detroit...I really can't see anything good coming from this. Rather have stuck with the poison we already know.
Anyone know anything about this guy? I don't know if this is a good move or not. I thought Shawn Murphy was doing good.
Yep, they do not muck around, they let go of players quuuiiccck. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-videos/09000d5d80f2f982/2009-Combine-workout-Lydon-Murtha He ran a 4.89 40 at 306 pds, I wonder if he is to play on ST?
Glad to see a Cornhusker on the Dolphins! Main problem at Nebraska was staying healthy. Was a 5 star recruit out of high school, but never really seemed to play up to the 5 star ranking. Might have been more the coaching back in the Callahan years though. Seems like he was fairly solid as a player, just not the "star" player. The 23 starts in 40 games, it seems like, back when Callahan was here, they would rotate him with another tackle, start a game or 2 or 3, then the other guy might have started a game or 2. Not positive, but thats what Im thinking.
Thanks for the information. He played Tackle and not Guard? And I liked him in Draft 09, he has really good measurables. Good luck to Murphy were ever he lands.
Yeah, thinking the Callahan staff kind of moved him back and forth between right and left tackle. When you are Husker fan though, you try to block out and forget the Callahan years. When Pelini and his staff came in, pretty sure he played Right Tackle, and that was it. Seems like his senior season was his best year, but still had the little injury problems. When he signed with Nebraska, think about every Big Red fan was happy as could be....Thinking he was going to be the start of a dominating line again. Solid player, with a few good games, a few games that werent so good. Kind of wonder what he could have been with a different staff, or had the Pelini staff for 2 or 3 years. Might have made better use of the physical ability he seems to have.
And Carl Nicks, the Huskers had some talent back then. Now Callahan is the Oline Coach for the Jets. We've stockpiled some good young OT prospects in Murtha, Gardner and Hartline, I cannot help but wonder if we are trying to develop them for trade down the road?
Wow, a bit surprised. A player off the Lions practice squad signed, and we cut Shawn Murphy... a guy who was supposedly the most improved player in TC, and was sort of starting for a while and doing a decent job while Thomas was recovering... Strange... Oh well. See ya Murph I guess... This Murtha guy is huge though. damn.
I am shocked by this move.... I guess I am just a dummy for believing Tony when he said that Murphy had improved....
to be honest with you i do, plus the phins traded up to draft him, when that happens i expect the player to be on the filed in the very near future.
So we cut a player wo hasnt done anything and a year and a half and waiving him for another project is a dumb move?
Consider we now lost a pick and to top things off we moved up to get him in my book yes it a dum move. I guess it a perfect one for you ?
Sounds like we could have handled it better http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolp.../dolphins-waive-shawn-murphy-sign-murtha.html Sounds pretty ****ty. He deserved a better exit if true.
If I add up the dum(dumb) things that Bill has done since he got here and then add up the good...I wonder which column would have more in it????...
True, the only "touchy feely" release was B London, everyone else was just...gone...like Billy Batts in Goodfellas. Seriously though, I'd bet the thinking went like this: "we need two roster spots, 1 for a kick returner to replace Cobbs, the other for Roth, so at the bottom of the roster is Murph and Q Moses, who is more easily replaced and who can replace them and go on the practice squad?" So we activate Roth, keep Q, and traded Murph for Murtha and added Kory Sheets. Fairly sharp and solid judgment imho.
Murphy was on the active roster, his release creates a spot for Roth. Murtha is going to the practice squad, not to the roster. That is to say, Murtha has to be on the active roster one week, then he can be demoted.
Don't know about that. Yes, he has to go to the active roster. But, to then waive him and hope to sign him to the practice squad in a week? I just think Moses will be waived to make room.
That was a "lost pick" when he couldnt get on the field at all last year, yes its dissapointing but we have a much better guard in Thomas, so it all worked out didnt it? I really am shocked that he lasted this long.
They could have waived Q and Murphy but chose not to do so, this appears like they don't want to let Q go for nothing. It does give us a view into when Roth will be coming back, both Sheets and Murtha have to be on the active roster for one week, meaning Roth is not going to play against the Saints barring another waiver.
Let me just say that there is no way that I am going to 2nd guess what our front office is doing right now. Are they going to make mistakes? yes, no doubt about it. However, no one is perfect and I don't expect them to be perfect. lastly, no one here (on this board) knows more about football then Parcell's, Ireland and Sparano... "NO ONE". AND no one here really knows why Murphy was let go but there has to be something to it that we are not being told.
I could care less about Murphy's feelings. I could care less about his draft status. If the Trio didn't think he was good enough to contribute, CUT HIM. Posted via Mobile Device
