Report: Pennington expected to return to Dolphins
YES!!
This is great, great news. We will be loaded at QB if it does go thru.
My question is, what happens to Pat White?
Tyler Thigpen is clearly too good to sit behind him. And it would be quite a surprise for this team to carry four quarterbacks.
Would they simply cut bait on White?
I think he'd be here thru training camp either way. Hopefully we find more ways for him to contribute and get the most out of what he is.dolfan7171, Themole, Delfin Alejandro and 4 others like this. -
Love me some Penny?

That great news to me. I just hope that they find something for White and keep Thigpen.

Woot woot.
Start Henne, Backup with Penni, and Project with White...ey?
I'd dangle White, and Thigpen into the trade waters and see who stirs. They're the same type of player, and neither will be seeing extensive play time. Odds are we'll just end up cutting one of them, but there were a few people who were interested in what White could do in the draft, maybe they're curious enough to burn a 5+ rounder? -

I'll tell you what to do with Pat White. Let him experience Free Agency. I can't think of any real use for that guy. I know some have said receiver, but is he even fast enough? Can he catch? Don't we have enough projects at receiver already? Cut him and chalk it up to experience. He's just taking up roster space.

I dunno about this. What real value, as a player, does he add? I guess I'm just scared that this will interfere with this being Henne's team. Kind of like 2008, when the Packers didn't bring Favre back. (Not saying that Penny would demand to start like Favre, but similar scenario) If this is really Henne's time, then there is no need for Pennington. Thigpen is more than serviceable as a backup. I dont know if Penny will be open to be the #3. And I sure hope he doesn't think he is going to be the #1.

Great news. Pennington is nothing but great for our team.
I absolutely do not see there being any kind of QB controversy in the locker room. Any of that would be driven by the media and/or fans.
Henne, and in turn our offense will continue to grow with Pennington's influence.
Those who think White will be cut.....I wouldn't expect it. How do you draft a player in the second round and then totally give up on him the very next year?
I'm with AZ in that the coaching staff will most likely look for another way to use him. I think they like Thigpen enough to keep him, as well.azfinfanmang likes this. -

They're not sold on Henne. No reason to bring back Pennington for Henne's 3rd year. He should by now know the playbook.

Guess it's pretty obvious at this point I am not a great fan of Pat White at the moment. He needs to show me something at this level and it just didn't happen last year. Maybe in time.

Man, I dunno. I guess I'm going to go against the grain and say I don't think it's such a great idea. I guess my main concern is Henne looking over his shoulder. Not to mention, we can't seriously carry four QB's...can we? Which begs the question...what to do with Pat White? Are we just giving up on the Pat White experiment one year after investing a second round pick in him? I mean, if he can't play QB, what value does he bring to the team? Seriously...I'm asking, 'cause I just don't know myself.
On an aside...Tin Indian, I hear you, and I am with you! I mutter under my breath every time Pat White's name comes up. I just wonder what might've been in terms of that oh so valuable draft pick last year? Sintim? Barwin? Kruger? I yi yi...
Don't get me wrong...I absolutely love Penny. I was crazy happy when we landed him two years ago. But, that was then and this is now. He was a bridge. And, I believe that bridge has been crossed. It's time to look ahead, not behind. Let Penny go and try his hand as a starter for teams that are starved for a quality QB (Cleveland, Buffalo and St. Louis all come to mind right off the top of my head). And, let Henne take control of this team. Don't send him mixed messages. Let him know this is his team.

Hopefully he can catch a ball. I think he could indeed be a decent WR...of course, probably not an Alpha reciever, and we have plenty of Non-Alpha's already.Tin Indian likes this. -
it would be unfortunate to let a veteran mind like penny's walk but i believe we have too
we know nothing about his arm after three major shoulder surgeries and that to me as you said is not the deciding factor but henne needs to have the reigns
give chad henne the team and develop him as your starting qb
even with pennington as a back up there still would have the feel of a possible controversy that sends us in the wrong direction and back to square one.
unfortunate to say but move on -
I want nothing more than for White to succeed, I really do. That boy is a gamer tried and true. He proved it in his final game of the season.
That being said, I don't want to see him develop at the cost of our team. Those roster spots are pretty darn precious. I'm hoping they find a way to make use of him, because taking 4 QBs into the season is just stupid in my opinion. And outside of age, I think Thigpen's got White beat. But who knows. Maybe the offseason workout program and camps will bring him up.
As for Pennington, I don't understand how anyone can think this is a bad move. So long as it's established from the get go that it's Henne's job to lose, Pennington can do nothing but help him succeed. He's now got a 2nd QB coach to confer with, and a backup that if something happens to him, we don't have to watch our season go down the drain. Any other team in the NFL would KILL right now to have our QB depth. -

Well to the topic at hand, Thigpen really isn't a 3rd Qb so honestly we must be looking to move him. White we can move to another position but it would be kind of a waste to have Thigpen just sitting around for a year then have him just leave via free agency when we could get a draft pick for him. Henne with Pennington backing him up is a great Qb situation though, this is good news. Kind of surprised Pennington wants to come back, he must have a few options to possibly start in places like Buffalo, Washington (or a similar team looking to take a Qb high that might not be ready to start) or gulp Oakland (not really shocked he wouldn't want to go there though.

Now whether that's true or not, who knows. My memory also sucks, so take that for what it's worth ;)
