interesting who the starting 5 will be tomorrow when gardner steps in, Long - Incognito - pouncey - Carey - Gardner/Colombo, this could really work, obviously Long won´t play tomorrow, will be interesting to see if he plays any preseason games, maybe the 3rd, gardner can also try LG or Berger, don´t think our depth is not that bad, o hara still in the mix

Downgraded 3 positions IMO, with Incognito staying at left guard. Add in Rookie center :pity:.

You know what f-it. I say pick up Leonard Davis and Mt. Mckinnie. and have the hugest O-line ever.
    LT-Jake Long LG-Leonard Davis C- Mike Pouncey RG-Vernon Carey RT-Bryant Mckinnie.

He wasn't bad in 09 before his injury. He gave up something like 1 sack in 10 games before injuring himself.

I'm also not sure why people are assuming Colombo is going to start at RT. The guy was a good player before injuries. Its really a matter of health IMO.

Let's not be naive. I'm sure Tony Sparano has a heavy hand in certain draft picks; especially on the O-line.

Exactly, and let's wait and see what happens when Wake and JT are put on Colombo in drills, if he is lame he will be exposed.

Remember, not everyone can be out there yet.

And my money says Nate Garner will be at one of those two positions.

Carey at guard is essentially like Leonard Davis at guard, though Carey obviously hasn't been there since college.

Darlington says it was a 'pay reduction' for Carey, per a source.

Armando says 'and a position change to guard'.

Not anything more, but it comes off sounding 'permanent'.

I don't think so Bro, this yr we go Jumbo on the Oline, which does not really fit with Zone concepts, but that is the way they are going.

How can it be a downgrade when it's the same player?

And how is Vernon Carey in any sense NOT an upgrade over John Jerry and Pat McQuistan? He's way overqualified to play Guard.

    As for Columbo:

The plan is to have the starting unit settled by the first preseason game, lets let them do what they need to do, which is something that they haven't been able to do for 7 months remember, wtf man, you've got to give the coach some time to get settled and bring in some fresh meat for depth...THERE WAS A LOCKOUT FOR CHRISTS SAKES..

    Sorry Rev..

Two games, in 2004, when he couldn't play Tackle, either.

The move itself shouldn't be an issue. He's overqualified to play Guard, athletically, and I don't know the learning curve is that significant. I've seen people claim the action is a bit faster to unfold at Guard because people are right on you, but given the number of teams running 3-4 defenses covering the Tackles, I can't see how that works in the professional game.

the good news is that we now have ourselves a very good right guard. the downside is that Henne will surely die at some point this season due to a hit that comes from the right side.

Its an obvious bargain move. The focus and priority of this FO is more on $'s than W's. It is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission= overspending is quickly forgotten if the W's come crashing in. There is a good chance AZ's FO will end up smelling like roses with their upgrades, eventhough they overspent. AZ has put themselves in prime position to win their division. Now, we are in an obviously tougher division, but if we overspent and snagged the wildcard how quickly it would become justified. I just hate this "generic shopping" we are doing. THE BAGGED CEREAL TASTES TOTALLY DIFFERENT MOM!~ me about 20 years ago before school one day.

I have always felt that VC was a better G than T. A very knowledgable Cowboy's fan I know has been telling me that Columbo was a playing injured the last two seasons, so anybody basing their opinion of Columbo on just two years of tape is really just guessing. That being said I think even a healthy Columbo is at best equal to what VC gave us last season. That is a strong point of attack player with limited mobility. IMO they are both better Gs than Ts.

I was hoping for a Carey move to Guard, too, so this doesn't bother me at all if Columbo proves to be a serviceable stop gap at RT.

Columbo on any point of his career was never as good as Carey. We can't use the last 2 years as a barometer because he was injured? I don't think so. The fact he's been injured the last couple years doesn't bode well for him lasting long this year either.

I think the open question is whether Columbo is serviceable at T or not. I don't think you can just go by the last two injured seasons to predict that though. You have to know if he's healed and you have to know how close he is to what he was two years ago when he was serviceable (maybe a bit better than just serviceable).

I think all the focus on Colombo is probably a little bit unbecoming given that they seem to like Nate Garner quite a bit.

I agree that it doesn't bode well for his ability to stay healthy. That's something I've criticized this front office for ignoring many times. But you can't look at a player playing injured and pretend you know how he'll play when he's healthy. I also don't agree that Carey was better at every point. Carey was not good last year. I think he was much better the previous year. IMO Carey's play last year is fairly comparable to how Columbo played when he was healthy.

Every GM has to make allocation of resources a priority. You can't just sign everyone that is a great player or an upgrade.

Sparano said today it will be Colombo v Murtha for the RT job.

I like this move, know you don't like kicking VC to G as this has come up before, I think the 'RT position now requires a better athlete then we have seen in the past.

Everyone else just heard: "Vernon Carey is now a Guard".

I heard: "Remember that 32 year old broken down tackle we snagged from the Cowboys a few days ago? The one that played terribly last year and that everyone laughed at when we signed? He's our starting Right Tackle"

But I guess I'm glass half empty guy.

I'm fine with Carey at RG. With Jake Long at LT I would say those two are arguably are perfect position fits. Pouncey at C is also an excellent fit with time to progress with line calls, etc...

It's the other two spots that just don't fit right. Why not switch Richie to RG, Vernon to LG and at least have a power left to the formation.

None of this solves the RT spot. I really do hope Murtha begins to impress. Colombo is not becoming 2008 Colombo anytime soon.

Remember that LT for the cowboys who is deaf in one ear and draws offsides flags, played poorly and was cut? Yeah Flozell Adams started in the SB at RT for the Stealers.

If they're opening up cap room (we had before so why have to open up that much more), perhaps Gaither's market really is that small?

Because they perceived that the talent that they can access to play RT is better then what they could find for RG? Move Carey to RG to solve that issue and let Colombo/Garner/Murtha battle it out for RT.

Put it this way, who was competing for the RG job?

    Feinga and Jerry?
