Don't worry, says Merling, who is 6-foot-4, 290 pounds. The defensive end had no plans to fight off the field or during games, which is probably why Sparano actually seemed OK with his rookies getting after it. Merling isn't only a tough guy. He's a big one, too. And a strong one. And precisely the type of player worth envisioning when you hear someone ask what a prototypical player under this new hierarchy should look like. Consider Long's description of his fellow rookie on the other side of the ball, and keep in mind that Long stands 6-7 and 310 pounds: ''At first, I really didn't think he was that big,'' Long said. ``Man, he's huge. And he's strong. He has quick hands. When he gets his hands inside of you, it's over. He definitely works hard. He's a strong guy with huge legs. Definitely a solid player.'' http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/football/miami-dolphins/story/621296.html

I am glad after the fight they are getting a long. I think yesterday did not mean any thing to them. I think they were probably just getting so frustration out.
Check out photo #3 on [http://www.miamidolphins.com/newsite/news/top_story.asp?contentID=5892 under the gallery of Day 1 of training camp. Might shed some light on Merling's weight. I'll let you be the judge...
Does look closer to 290 than 275. But, he always looked pudgy around the mid-section even in college, and he was definitely 274 in college.
I agree. Interesting to see what he'll look like after a full year and offseason program in the NFL, especially under the current regime.
There's a huge difference between the old, Pro Bowl Richard Seymour, and the guy who has been probabaly below average the last year or two.
Name: Phillip Merling Height/Weight: 6-4, 290 Position: DE Born: 4/19/85 College: Clemson '09 Acquired: D2a, '08 NFL: Rookie Dolphins: Rookie http://www.miamidolphins.com/newsite/team/roster/playerBio.asp?docid=33168
Man, I was looking at Merlings weight compared to Gaines Adams, his former teammate in Clemson. There's a HUGE difference between them. Adams is listed at 258. I thought he was in the 290 range as well.
sounds good. At least theres been alot of positive talk about our draft picks this year. Im liking the Merling and Langford picks quite a bit. Also Parmele and Thomas too. Sounds like those 4 are going to work out for sure.
