Patriots S Brandon Meriweather has been fined $50,000 for two helmet-to-helmet hits in Week 6. Meriweather won't be suspended, but it's a stiffer fine than normal. Starting in Week 7, NFL referees will be enforcing rules already on the books for "devastating hits" and "head shots." Offenders will be candidates for suspension from here on out. http://twitter.com/#!/MikeReiss/statuses/27864110760 So the guy admits it, after inflicting 2 head to headers...and gets fined, but not suspended...expect the same for Harrison...
also Harrison fined 75k (Only for Massaquoi hit); and Dunta Robinson fined 50k (this shouldn't have been a fine...clean hit)....
Imagine if Sean Taylor was still alive today () It would be a weekly fine even though many of his hits were clean.
His was the most obvious attempt to hurt someone. He led with his head and specifically aimed for Heap's head. Most of the other hits were going for the full blow and aimed too high - Meriweather went headhunting.
Yup Merrieweather was the dirtiest. And Harrison was only fined for hit on Massaquoi (because of forearm to head) but how no penalty was called is what frustrates me as a fan - and correctly not on Cribbs at all per the rule - since Cribbs was a runner with established possession and not a "defense-less" receiver. But Robinson's $50k fine is silly, as his was a clean football play and tackle/separating ball from player and they fine him saying now, "not only do you have to be careful to avoid hitting head, if you hit them in the chest, and the force moves you up to the head (or in this case the receiver slides down via impact) you can be fined". Thats bad...plus no penalty was called on the field at the time.
Has anyone come out with a good explanation as to why exactly Chris Clemons was suspended that 1 game? Did the league make him choose between a suspension and a fine he couldn't afford or something?
Meriweather is a punk -- has been since his days at Miami. What's the justification for the $25,000 difference in fines? As mentioned previously, Meriweather's cheap shot was every bit as bad as Harrison's, if not worse.
I cant figure that out either.....to me in ranking of cheap or dirty goes: 1) merriweather (launching helmet to helmet) 2) harrison (launching with forearm lead to head area) and not on the list is at all should be 3) Robinson The $75k should have been issued to Merriweather...but having degrees of penalties and fines at all is silly. We are putting a price tag on how flagrant a flagrant foul is - post game. Again, no flag on Harrison play. Thats a bad job of not only officiating in general, but then leveling some flexible dollar amount after the fact. Silly.
