That "joke" has managed to guide us to the 13th best production in the NFL in points per game, despite having no real WRs to speak of and the team only 22nd in the league in yards from scrimmage.

Did I like the call? No, but I don't blame him for making it.

Execution or not, you don't have a player who up to that point has attempted how many NFL passes, throw the ball in that situation. Would have been better to just run it in there. Ricky is not a QB, we took a players strength and played away from it, that is a poor call no matter how you swing it. If it worked, its called luck. Let him pass it where the field is more wide open, not when people are bunched up in the endzone.

 

So all the plays down the field were good calls...but the call that was poorly executed is a bad call by default???

For the record I despised the call for many of the reasons pointed out...but its execution that produced the RESULTS not the call. The call never produces the RESULTS.

 

Basically having Ricky throw in that situation is dumb. You have your QB throw in that situation since he is use to reading the D. Ricky on the other hand is not, and we got to see the results of that. Let him throw it when there is more room. Not when they are all bunched up. Was it bad execution? Yes. But it was also a poor play call, putting Ricky in a position to have a greater chance of failure.

Henning doesn't have to explain a god-damned thing, especially given the stuff presented in the article. Given how our offense has performed given the circumstances, our red zone efficiency, and Ricky Williams performance in practice, he was perfectly justified. Regardless of what backseat Madden offensive coordinators claim.

 

the thing with henning is you know if he was coaching new england and their players he would be considered a genius because pasties players tend to execute their plays to perfection. we dont have the brightest bulbs necessarily. not stupid but not football geniuses either. his playcalling is complex and that leads to lots of mistakes and why many coaches prefer to KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)

 

When the call is a logical call. There was no need for a RUNNING BACK to try and attempt a pass, simple as that. Stop playing devil's advocate, its lame.

There is a huge difference between previous half back passes from this one. In each play call, you play the percentages. At mid field, or 20 yards out, or on your own 20 completing a half back pass versus running the ball for what would probably be 3-4 yards, the trade off is pretty good. A trade off that might make the risk acceptable. At the 3 yard line, the odds of completing a half back pass are far less then punching it in on the ground; therefore, the risk is foolish.

There is a huge difference in the scenarios. Dan Henning should know that difference.

 

I don't care what anyone in our offense does in practice, cause for one thing, it's against our D and it has showed how well it can stop people or should i say can't stop people. Just because it was run well in practice doesn't mean it fits well in that very game situation. Henning got cute and it cost us 6, plain and simple.

 

Highly doubt that. Ricky was gashing the bills for 7 yards a carry on that drive. To have Ricky throw it on 1st and goal would of had me pissed even if he threw a TD. If anything, Chad Henne playaction, but a HB pass? :no:

 

For me the Henning problems run much deeper than the Ricky pass, his goalline playcalling has been a joke all year, and his LACK of ability to make halftime adjustments are basis for him to seek employment elsewhere imo.

Right when I think I'm getting over the Bills game, I have to be reminded by the play that IMO opinion cost us the game. That play killed our offensive mojo, and when your defense is guaranteed to fail you, you simply can't take those types of risks at that point in a ballgame. I'd say that there was a 99.9% chance of us scoring a TD by running the ball 3 straight times by any running back we have and that would have set a completely different tone for the whole game.

Not when you're on the 1 yard line with a RB who has not been practicing tossing the ball for the past two years (Ronnie). Ronnie's first TD was NOT on the 1 yard line last year and it was when we were blowing the crap out of NE.

This is on the 1 yard line, at the beginning of the game, with the score 0-0. It's idiotic, and there is no defense of the call.

 

Shall we do a list of positives and negatives of the play call?...nahhhhhhh..

 

Ist and goal at the 3, RW is running over them at will and is admittedly not comfortable throwing the football.

That's not correct, Ricky Williams attempted several passes last year that don't statistically count as such because he pulled it down and ran with it.

While you can certainly make an argument that had we scored the TD on that play we still might have lost, it's really hard to argue the that the play didn't change the tone of the game. Because it is a fact. Teams play differently when they are ahead or behind or tied. Playcalling is different, confidence is different, the fan element is different, and I could go on and on.

Yeah, and after that INT, we came back to go up 7-0. So I'm not sure about all this "killed our confidence" argument. It certainly cost us 7 points, but anything beyond that I'm not buying.

I was pissed at the call. Honestly, if it ain't broke you don't fix it. If it were 3rd and goal I probably wouldn't have been as upset, but you have to run it on 1st and Goal from the 1.

That said, It's hard for me to blame Henning for any of the offensive woes. Look at the talent on this roster. Now consider he's lost his starting QB and starting (Pro-Bowl) running back.

We're killing him over a handful of bad play calls over the course of 11 games, and not admiring the good things he's done over that span.
