Four practices deep, the results have been favorable, Sparano said. ``Neither one of them are running away from anything out there,'' Sparano noted specifically about Misi and Odrick. ``As [Bill] Parcells would say, `If they don't bite when they're pups, they don't bite.' ``These guys do bite. So it's been a good decision.'' Read more: http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/08/02/1756915/dolphins-rookies-jared-odrick.html#ixzz0vTVmB1UR I think these guys are going to make a big impact this year.
I love this quote. It just goes to show that young guys can make a difference to your football team immediately. Contrary to what most here believe you can usually tell early on if a player has it. Thus the reason I called Merling a bust and I was told it was too early to write him off. That is nonsense you know by now. I wanted Brandon Graham in the draft but most of you said I was crazy to think he could make an impact at OLB and then you get a quote like this from Parcells. Often Dolphin fans don't think outside of their conservative little box. It kills me.
This is a great article, and we should not discount our huge rookie guard trying to start next to the best in Jake Long.. Ive said this before but if Odrick pan's out at end, he will have unprecedented size for the position....
I'm feelin you on that Killerphins. I always thinking outside the box. I want to see everyone going to the Pro Bowl and of course the Super Bowl. But hey, what do I know
One play. That is all he has done since he has been here. I want relentless players who constantly get after it. Merling is one of the lazy dogs to sit on the porch and be serviceable visibly. I want dogs that get off the porch and sink their teeth into someones ***.
I had really high hopes for Merling coming out of Clemson. But that one play is all that comes to mind when I think about his Dolphin career thus far...
Go look it up he had better numbers last year. Anemic for a top 2nd round pick but they were better. Nope that dog never got off the porch bro. He is a bust.
Merling has made more than one play against Favre. Dont remember if it was against the Jets last year that he made a couple plays also that resulted in turnovers. I think he had a play against the Ravens in our playoff loss, etc...His only problem is inconsistency. It happens to alot of young twenty year olds. He may very well be let go this year or next but he will be in this league for quite a few years more. There are plenty of other DEs playing far worse than Merling
DJ, John Jerry has been working exclusively at RG, not next to Long. I also think it's a pretty big stretch to say Odrick has unprecedented size for a 3-4 DE.
Sorry stitch, my bad, ive been going thru my mind trying to think of players that size as a rookie, and I can't think of any that are 305 at D end, and who have the body type to gain more size ? let me know who your thinking of? Ive read a few lines from reporters commenting on his incredible body composition for a man that big, and some that were just completely dazed by his size..The Jake Long of defense ive heard...
Richard Seymour is almost identical size (6'6" 310) and he's been in the league for 10 years now. Ty Warren is 6'5" 300. Tyson Jackson is 6'4" 296. Heck, Kendall Langford is like 6'6" 296. I'm not saying Odrick doesn't have great size, I merely took issue with calling his size unprecedented.
I will be more specific with my thought process..Seymour was 299 comin out of college, Odrick is 305 comin out, seymour had rare size comin out..and at this point, I thinks its safe to say he is the biggest?. Also, Jared is bigger than Warren, Jackson and langford right now..That is why I used that word....It still might apply relatively speaking considering where he's at coming out.
When they talk about his size it might be the fact he's 305 of solid muscle. His body fat is freakishly low.
Ngata is usually a DE in the 3-4, and UT in the 4-3. But they do move him around, and he certainly can play almost any position on the line.
