I sort of agree with you. if they wanna smoke weed let them. I view NBA as a business. I work for publix and they can randomly drug test me or any employee at any time and fire them. The NBA is allowed to do the same thing. The real problem here is the fact that weed is illegal.

I was only half joking. Would I care if the NBA/NFL bent the rules and allowed guys to smoke weed? Hell no, let them smoke every day. As long as it doesn't affect their performance on the field Im all for it.

As a fan, Im not concerned about the morals and or ethics of the players involving my team. Nor am I concerned about the legal ramifications of said players/teams off the field.

Disclaimer: What the Pats did was wrong, thats a special scenario I would not condone as a fan.

i'm pretty sure the NBA doesn't suspend people for smoking weed.

You would be incorrect in your assumptions, they do infact suspend players for any illigal substances. Now how this affects him is yet TBD as in playing. Since it was outside of the NBA he did not violate any regulations, BUT, that doesnt mean they cannot test him. Be interesting to see how this turns out.

I believe under league rules, he is able to be suspended because of him violating the rookie program rules.

    EDIT: Here it is:

Wrong is wrong though, there is no shaded area. I dont see how you can condone the Pats for cheating which BTW all the teams do it in one way or the other, they just got caught, but be so nonchalant about these guys breaking the law. Unless of course you are a pothead yourself, then it would make total sense. BTW I'm not busting your balls here, just having a conversation. I by no means want this to be ugly, we'z be'z boyz.:knucks:

Im really not a pothead, Im just very liberal when it comes to recreational drug use... even though marijuana is the only illegal drug I consider a "recreational" one.

Why I brought up the Pats was because I dont condone breaking the rules to gain a competitive advantage. Never in the history of sports has weed given an athlete an edge... unless we're talking about the World Series of Eating Ho-Ho's, which we are not.

So In summation, yes it's illegal, no I dont think it should be, nor do I care if guys get busted for it. We're still boys and you can let go of my balls now :wink2:

I don't think that law = wrong. The government has a list of drugs that are ok and a list that isn't. They tried to put alcohol on the list but the reaction from the public and the lobbyist was strong enough to get it reversed. Pot by every measure I've ever seen is less damaging to society than alcohol but it has more of a stigma so it's on the list. There have been many FDA approved drugs that have caused very severe problems for their users. So I don't smoke pot but if I had to make a choice I would feel safer smoking pot than taking many of the legal prescription drugs.

Stan Van Gundy said in an interview on LeBetard's show that if a player is caught smoking marijuana during the season the story isn't suspended and isn't released to the public. They just put them into their drug program. So i am not incorrect in my assumption.

He got into trouble because he did it in the rookie program and i heard he also had woman with him in his room which isn't allowed either.

This Mario Chalmers story is such a headache. The old heads are making too much out if it. The issue isn't the fact that he smokes weed, it's the fact that he was caught. Who cares if the guy smokes weed? There's nothing wrong with marijuana. I'll never understand how this ******ed legal system allows the purchase of cigarettes, but not marijuana. That's stupid, but obviously for another argument.

Anyways, you've got to be a REAL IDIOT to smoke weed in a hotel at an NBA organized event. That's just stupid. I hope he's not as dumb as this situation makes him seem to be.

Oh, and that "women in the hotel room" policy if extremely gay. Literally. David Stern is gay.

Also, the usage of marijuana is NOT "wrong"

My college test scores are through the roof. :wink2:

(I do not approve of any other drug usage; only marijuana. I love marijuana. She was my high school sweetheart, actually met her back in 6th or 7th grade. We're happily married now. Love you, baby!)

I thought the issue (your question) was how can someone condemn the Pats for cheating but condone Chalmer's behavior since they both broke rules?

When it stops being illegal, you'll stop hearing about it. In the meantime, these players need to be glad they aren't arrested for possession.

    What's Chalmers' opening day status?

Everything i have read suggests he'll get a suspension of some kind, Stern himself got very mad about them.

    From the NBA thread:

Rookies Chalmers and Arthur Facing Suspension

Miami Heat rookie Mario Chalmers and Grizzlies rookie Dorrell Arthur were recently caught with marijuana when the smoke alarm in their hotel room went off at the NBA Rookie Transition Program. Chalmers and Arthur refused to let hotel management in until the police showed up. The two were fined $20,000 and now are facing suspension. According to NBA rules, the two are subject to five game suspensions. The decision will be made by Commissioner David Stern in the end. Stern is the one who kicked Arthur and Chalmers out of the rookie program. Arthur has denied the usage of marijuana.

Interesting that they've been kicked out of the rookie program on top of possibly being suspended. Anything to hurt the Heat and help the Panties, eh, Stern?

I expected a suspension but I didn't think that it was in the rules that they HAD to get suspended. The CBA rules say that they are subject to a suspension of five games. Stern has the final say though. He was very upset with them.

Shouldn't they need the program more than ever now?

Stern is not only gay (female/hotel rule), but also dumb as hell.

    Yahoo -

    G - Gordon / Chalmers / Quinn
    G - Wade / Hughes / Cook
    F - Jones / Wright / Diawara
    F - Beasley / Haslem
    C - Noah / Magloire / Blount / Anthony

    Ummm, yeah? Obviously.

That team contends for the EC title in 2008-2009. Hughes expires BIG TIME in 2010; we shed a year from the books by "losing" Marcus Banks. Obviously, Ben Gordon gets about $10 million per season, but with Haslem, Hughes, and Blount all expiring in 2010 ($28-30 million combined; $33-35 if we don't pick up James Jones' team option), we can still target a big name player to go along with Wade. Can you imagine a core of Wade, Beasley, Gordon and another All-Star? Sweet Jesus. I know that Ben Gordon isn't a true point guard, but it'd work itself out with Wade back there. All he's got to do is bring the ball up the court and camp behind the arc; drive to the basket, which he's great at, occasionally. Noah would be a steal in that deal as well. We'd be giving up zero youth; zero future.

Also, I'd light up with Noah and Chalmers any time.......

Apparently, Beasley was involved in the incident that got Chalmers and Aurther in trouble at the rookie symposium... and was fined $50,000 today.

Also, it's looking like Shaun Livingston will be wearing a suit and tie on Miami's bench in 2008-2009. It's not like our 15th man is going to be a major contributor anyway; with that talent, he's certainly worthy of the spot.
