Too Hip-hop?
Was he freestyling in the interview?
Another moronic decision by Waynes World, sadly we seem to STILL have issue on identifying who can coach in this league and who cant. -
At least within the article they are essentially admitting the stupidity of writing these articles every single damn year.
At that point Cameron was just as good a candidate as Tomlin. Cameron was offensive, Tomlin was defensive. Our offense sucked, hence Cameron.
Hindsight is 20/20.
Brees is a different story though...late again likes this. -

By the way, the DC that year was none other than Dom Capers, the DC of today's Super Bowl playing Green Bay Packers. :pity::pity::pity: -

You hire the best man out there, limiting yourself to an offensive or defensive guy is ridiculous. If Dom Capers is that **** important then make him the head coach. You're going to interview head coaches and ignore leadership qualities? I'll go on a limb here and say Tomlin is probably twice the leader that Cam is. Bill Cowher has been out of Pittsburgh for five years now. This is Mike Tomlin's team playing in the big game tonight.

Let me just pick that wound and add a little salt.

Cameron also inherited a CF of a team as opposed to Tomlin inheriting a team two years removed from the superbowl. A lot of the decisions we make are based on a molten foundation and knee jerk reactions. Hard to coach when you don't know what you have. Until the Dolphins develop some sort of consistency, you can plug in Bellichek and it won't get any better.

Steelers organization >>>>>>>>> Dolphins organization
You guys are delusional if you think the difference between a 1-15 season and a perennial SB team is the difference between Cam Cameron and Mike Tomlin. Not to take anything away from Tomlin, but he inherited a great situation. He's done an excellent job of keeping an excellent team/organization on the right track, but let's not pretend he would have turned the Dolphins around.
Cam Cameron inherited a bowl of lemons and he turned it into dog ****. Undoubtedly he could have done better, and I believe that Tomlin would have done better, but I don't prescribe to the theory that we were a Mike Tomlin away from a Cinderella turn around.
Say what you will about Parcells, but what he did in Miami had to be done. You may not agree with his blueprint for success, but at least he had a blueprint and he brought guys in to follow that blueprint. For the past 20 years we had been an organization that wasn't quite sure what kind of team we wanted to be - and it showed. Had we hired Tomlin that year he would have failed like those before him.
So, instead of thinking about this from the Dolphins' perspective, I think from Tomlin's perspective he should be extremely thankful that he was never offered the Dolphins job.GARDENHEAD, steveincolorado, GISH and 1 other person like this. -

Can anyone re-define the meaning of the term "Hip Hop?" I've heard it used hundreds of times but, NEVER did anyone say it was racist.
For something completely different and actually very dumb. Sam Shields, from "The U" was an undrafted FA. He wanted to play for our Phins.
In his interview, with Sparano, he was asked who the DB's coach was. He did not know, and Tony yelled that he had already failed his test. Shields is making plays, and is in the SB. Now, that was dumber than dumb. -
There's a lot more that goes into winning a championship than the head coach. It takes the right culture, which starts at the very top. I find it quite ironic that Tomlin was interviewed in Pittsburgh to satisfy the Rooney rule, which leads to Tomlin leading the team to one super bowl title and perhaps another.

It's so easy to sit back AFTER the fact and dissect every decision we've made with the proverbial, "We should have done this", "We could've done that". As it relates to this thread's title, I can remember how elated MANY were about the decision to hire Cam Cameron as Head Coach...how he was going to bring his high powered explosive offense from San Diego to Miami...how we were finally going to have an offense to balance our defense. Well, it didn't pan out that way and now we're whining like kids over the fact that Mike Tomlin, who is about to make his second Super Bowl appearance was a candidate that we interviewed and chose not to hire.
There's only one receint decision that I personally feel is easily dissectable in my opinion...choosing Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees.
Right now there's coaching decisions being made during the offseason. As for the Dolphins, some of them we collectively have been scratching our heads, wondering why and other teams we're looking at enviously, wishing they were the decisions we made. But who's to know what coaching decisions are the BEST coaching decisions?
Would ANYONE have realitistically thought in today's NFL that a 34 year old "kid" (Compared to Belllichek, Fox, Dungy, Cowher, etc...) would in his second season as a head coach be a Super Bowl winning coach? I think if we look at this from an objective point of view, there's no way we could have forefseen Tomlin being a better choice than Cameron.late again and Garryowen like this. -
I guess I need to buy a "Super Secret De-Coder Ring" -
Just to reinforce the point, the 2007 coaching search team (Huizenga, Joe Bailey, and Brian Wiedmeyer) also interviewed and passed on John Harbaugh in favor of Cam Cameron in addition to dismissing Tomlin as “too hip-hop.” Honestly, I think that comment comes from Bailey. -
well, **** me.
To think we could presently have Mike Tomlin coaching Drew Brees, and DeSean Jackson on offense, and Patrick Willis on defense... smh.DolfanJake likes this. -
Look at Tomlin on the sidelines. Does he look "Too hip hop?" I don't think so.late again likes this. -

How great of a coach would Tomlin be without Dick LeBeau running the defense?, not to mention all the great players they have had since Tomlin took over for Cowher.

Black/White I couldn't care just give me a coach with a set of Steel Balls and a winning attitude.

It's a matter of being able to do the job.

He was magnificent handling a division....But handling a Corps was
beyond his ken. That's just how it works sometimes. -
seriously though, Tomlin took over a Super Bowl caliber team. Cameron took over a team that had little and aging talent. It is a pointless arguement imo.Trowa, The_Dark_Knight and MikeHoncho like this. -

I think you hire a good coach first and foremost. A leader of men.
Cameron had previously failed as a college head coach. He was not a leader of men and that bore out during the season, with Joey Porter putting the nail in the coffin in front of the entire team.
Tomlin was my guy. And the Dolphins -- as an aside -- were dumb to re-up Capers before they'd hired a head coach. But that's what backward organizations do.
