I wonder what the Fins have in mind to trade? OV? Maxwell would make 8.5 next year, cutting Grimes and trading for Maxwell makes sense, but what are we giving up?
My guess is a late round pick or maybe Grimes. I think we are essentially taking the contract off of the Eagles' hands.
That was my thought as well... this is likely a scheme fit move for us. Maxwell excels in a 4-3 zone coverage base. He plays well in dime and nickel spreads. He's not a press man corner which is what Philly tried to make him. Should mean the end of Grimes and Miko if this goes thru.
Man this seems like a horrible first move by our defensive coach. I know he doesnt pick players but he must have lobbied or approved this move. Maxwell looked horrible last year in philly what makes Miami think they can turn him into a replacement for Grimes?? Paycheck doest equal production..
You greatly overestimate the power of a transition tag. This is why he should have received the exclusive rights tag. The transition tag is worthless. If they wanted Vernon, all they have to do is make him an offer.
Kiko Alonso is apparently coming with him. What on Earth is happening?!?!? I think I am going to have an aneurism!
I would love to see how the negotiations went down for this trade: Roseman - It looks like you guys need a corner. Tannenbaum - Corner, you say. Sir, I am looking for a flashy name. Ideally, he would happen to play corner. Roseman - Well, Michael, you are in luck because we signed a huge name last year in Byron Maxwell. It was a flashy move. Now, sadly, he didn't pan out very well at all. I imagine you have never gone down the road of a big name free agent not panning out, but sadly it does happen. Tannenbaum - I have no idea what you are talking about. Big name free agents always work. Just look at the Packers and how they build through free agency. I am stuck with these stupid draft picks. The draft is long and boring. I just need flash. Roseman - Mike, I like you. I'll tell you what. I will take some of those draft picks, and I will give you Maxwell and his shiny contract full of commas. Tannenbaum - I could not imagine this day getting any better. Roseman - Michael, this may be your lucky day. I see you also are in need of linebackers. Tannenbaum - Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that last season. Roseman - Can you think of a name more hot than Kiko Alonso three years ago? Tannenbaum - Not at all. What ever happened to him? Roseman - Oh you know, he had a couple of minor ACL tears - nothing serious. I don't want to brag, but he had 30 whole tackles last year. You know, if you give me some more of those draft picks/lottery tickets, I will throw him in too. Tannenbaum - Pshhhhyeah. This is a no brainer. Ross - You're not lighting my money on fire again, Mike? Tannenbaum - Oh Stephen, is such a jokester. Roseman - I hear you might be losing your running back too. If Llamar leaves, come back on Wednesday. I have a running back with a big ole flashy contract that you will love.
Trade is done. They're working on Maxwells restructured deal. I bet he winds up costing less than Grimes would have.
We got younger, and cheaper, from what I can tell. Also keep in mind that defenders on a Chip Kelly run team really need to be graded on a curve. His coaching style is not structured to help the defense play well.
