their LB's play with a purpose, play intense, part of that is talent, part of it is coaching....can't go wrong....the only thing, if he was in fact the heir apparent to the present DC...then why grant permission?? thoughts?

LeBeau is really showing no signs of being ready to retire, so why wait another five years when you have a chance to show what you have right now.

You grant permission for good relations.
Lebeau has been comtemplating retiring for the past couple years, which basically means they have been stringing Butler along.
You let him walk and take a better position out of respect for the person and the job he did with your team. It certainly isn't good for relationships to smack down a coach's chance of promotion.

 

Nice, I was kind of worried after reading Crennel decided to go to KC instead of here that Groh would become the defacto choice for Parcell's and company. Good to know they are looking in other places!

 

I can see that, it is a business, some people want to play nice, and some play hardball....Dick must not be going anywhere to quick...

 

Parcells likes aggressive defense, so if Butler's anything like LeBeau this would make a lot of sense.

 

Not only that, however long it is until Lebeau decides to retire, it give them that much longer to get the new guy up to speed on how they do business. They obviously think it will be more than one, or they wouldn't let Butler walk.

 

Keith Butler enters his seventh year on the Steelers’ coaching staff after joining the staff prior to the 2003 season. He remained on staff following Mike Tomlin’s hiring in January, 2007.

Butler and Tomlin previously worked together at Memphis in 1996, where Butler was the linebackers/defensive ends/special teams coach and Tomlin served as the Tigers defensive backs coach.

Butler was named the Steelers’ linebackers coach Jan. 28, 2003, after serving the previous four seasons in a similar capacity with the Cleveland Browns (1999-02).

It's really a give and take scenario. Maybe in the future we have someone who they want to interview. We reluctantly let Jason Garret interview with the Cowboys, even though many wanted him to be the OC here.

 

I thought the rules in the NFL stipulate that you don't need permission to interview for a job as long as it is a promotion. So we technically wouldn't even need permission to interview him...

True but when you are in as small a pond as the NFL its much better to play nice, case in point, no poison pill used on the Welker trade as per the Pats Owner.

 

I like this potential move. I woud prefer him to be defensive coordinator. But he could be good as LB coach too. It's a win-win situation.

 

Him as DC would be nice.

 

I don't think he can be LB coach here, I believe according to NFL rules for him to be hired here it would have to be in an increased capacity ala DC.

I know that is the rule for HC and coordinator positions, not positive if that is how it works all the way down the line.

Nope, under contract and they can turn down an interview, happened last week with the Titans OL coach Mike Munchak, he was turned down to interview for the OC job with the Texans.

At any rate, this has me excited. That's the kind of defense you want. An aggressive, attacking, explosive defense. Lord knows he's overseen quite a unit.

He looks a lot like Bill Cowher with that mustache. Hopefully he coaches like him too.

 

He's ready to make his name as a defensive coordinator. This would be a great offseason move.

I wonder what he can make of channing crowder? I bet porter really wants to stay in Miami now.

keep in mind Butler turned down an offer from his good friend Ken Whisenhunt last offseason to be the DC in Arizona

just because we are talking to him doesn't mean it will happen
this is not a slam dunk by any means

 

He was denied by the Steelers in 2007

Whisenhunt was interested in him after the superbowl, but I find nothing that says he interviewed and turned it down.

 

Bill Bidwell's squeeky wallet may have had something to do with the lack of traction.
