Here's another article from NFL.com talking about Miami saying they'll use the franchise tag on Jake Long in 2013 if they can't come to an agreement before then. Seems to me they'd like to extend Starks and Hartline first, tag long if need be, and work out his deal. Sean Smith would be the one I'm not sure about extending at this point having just given relatively big money to Richard Marshall.

I'm not sure Marshall has any effect on Smith. I don't think you can have too many quality CBs.

 

IMO, Bline needs to prove he can do it for a full season, so no extension for him imo, SS24 is a good idea though.

I think if u feel u can get either hartline our Smith for cheep you do it

 

You need guys like him b/c they create matchup problems for offenses, if big wr's are what is there, he can manage them.

Granted, he should be better then he has been however tall Cb's are so rare it would be good to keep him.

 

Hartline is definitely worth an extension and you really would like to do it before a potential breakout season. Is Fasano in his last year as well or is next season his last?

Regardless of whether Smith has earned big bucks, you really should try to extend these guys before they earn it.

 

I hope they extend Hartline.

I feel Starks should be the priority, aside from Long.... man, ckparrot was talkin about us drafting a DT in the first round next year ! Not exactly what I want to hear. Starks has been consistent. Hartline and Smith still have a lot to prove this year.

 

What about Vontae Davis?

 

I think I see what they are doing, sign the guys with a lot of potential now before they blow up and it cost them even more to sign or worse have to let them go.

Sean Smith comes in last imo in importance. Just haven't seen much with that dude.

 

Sean Smith may be much easier and less expensive to sign if our new DC and his staff are good at bringing out the talent that's been hiding in Sean since we drafted the guy. As for drafting a pass rushing DT in the first round next season, CK is dead on. Only other position I'd consider would be WR if the group we have don't shine this season. I expect far better QB play this season from either Moore or Garrard, so we will know a lot more about our WR group before the next draft.

Either way, CK is right on target. Only the ability to put serious pressure on guys like Tom Brady is going to enable us to beat the Pats, and face it the Pats still set the bar in the AFC East. You don't go to SB's too often if you're not the best team in your own conference/division.

 

You've got to wonder a bit how long Randy Starks has left and/or at what level. He's only 28, but upcoming season will be his 9th in the NFL. Odds are he's going to ask for, and likely deserve an increase in pay, but I think you've got to be a little bit wary.

 

We just took Odie, what would be helpful is if he and Vernon develop this yr.

Or one of the UDFA's, or even McDaniel.

 

The last I read, neither Starks' agent nor Jake Long were aware of any contract extension talks. In fact the last I read, they hadn't even decided whether to pursue that with Starks. Hartline's agent on the other hand had been contacted about an extension a while ago. I heard about Sean Smith as well, and that was surprising.

 

We rotate the DL so much, I don't think Starks is close to wearing down yet. He's played between 517 and 751 snaps every season for us. In comparison, Darnell Dockett played over 1k snaps last season and over 920 in each of the last four seasons. Justin Smith has over 1k in two of the last 4, and had 800+ and 900+ in the other two.

Now that Wake is locked up and we have the Franchise Tag available for Jake, Starks is easily the next priority to resign IMO.

 

That's not really all that low of a snap count except in 2010. There's an inherent need to rotate big defensive linemen, and Starks has had what are pretty normal "starting" snaps for a player like that here besides 2008. Guys like Dockett and Smith are an exception.

Starks was a monster the last few games if I remember correctly. Plus he has better hands than our DBs. Picked Sanchez off twice! :knucks:

 

What if they explode and cost too much? They have already proven they can play good. Sign them while the price of the contract is low.

 

In 2011, there was 57 DL with more snaps than Starks. In 2010, there was 36. That's including all 4-3 ends, 3-4 ends, and DT/NTs.

 

Vernon was a true junior. He was never redshirted. 3 yrs at The U, played all three.

Starks was also a true junior the year he was drafted. Never redshirted.

 

Soliai, Odrick...... With Starks back...... What more could you ask for? . DE, WR, DB, LB need attention, while DT is our greatest strength right now. I'd like to see someone argue against that.

 

That's a bit misleading. Most of those are 4-3 DEs and significantly lighter than 300+ pound guys. The overwhelming majority of bigger guys are going to cap out in the 700 range, like Starks has for the last several years(He's been top 10 in 3-4 DEs the last couple years). The guys getting 800-900 snaps are the exception, not the rule.

 

But they are going against 300 lb + OTs.

 

There's not the same kind of athlete and capable of playing higher snap counts from a conditioning standpoint.

 

FWIW, I recently read that Jake said they haven't had extension talks and that he expects to be tagged next season if a extension can not be worked out in time.

 

Be that as it may, I still maintain that after Jake, Starks is the #1 priority for resigning of the guys who will be UFAs after 2012. I'd guess he'll get something similar to what Langford got from the Rams. 24mil/4yrs, with about 12 mil guaranteed. Perhaps slightly higher. 10% or so.
