http://movies.yahoo.com/news/movies.reuters.com/mickey-rourke-play-conans-father-reuters Good casting; Momoa: is an excellent choice to play Conan, too.
Mickey will beat it into him. I wonder who the villain will be; no way, no how anyone else can ever play Thulsa Doom except for James Earl Jones.
I'm a huge Conan fan. I really hope this is very successful and they do some sequels that go beyond an origin story. I would also like seeing James Earl Jones in the new one if only as a secondary character because well he is just that good. Please no Grace Jones though.
The first, Conan the Barbarian, is always in my all-time top 5. It was an excellent movie because John Milius had a vision for it and he executed it perfectly. Conan the Destroyer was putrid because Dino de Laurentis' hubris got the best of him and he made the movie without Milius...not to mention that the story, writing and acting were atrocious.
You had Wilt and Grace Jones, two non-actors; a 15-year-old Olivia D'Abo in her first film role ever, so she was as raw as they come. Then Arnold, who was never the greatest actor anyway, with a poor supporting cast. Add in a poor story and a terrible script, and presto! Horrible movie!
She was only 15 in that??? Oh I... Same boat here. I liked the first movie but the 2nd was just bad except a little good sword fight choreography. Oh and the great line "Fight with a real weapon not a toothpick!" I'm pretty forgiving to bad films when I am a fan of the subject or theme but that movie was difficult to sit through. Side note, the sound track from the first movie is awesome if a fan of orchestral classical type music. One of my favorite CD's.
Basil Poledoris is one of the most underrated composers of this generation, IMO. Aside from Conan (which is awesome), Quigley Down Under ranks among the greatest musical scores of all time.
Thanks for the info Nabo but I cant agree. I was hoping that they would do a decent remake but Momoa? Seriously? God this is just as bad or worse than casting Triple H as Conan. Hell I'd prefer Triple H, ROFL. I dont see why some of you guys see him as looking like Conan... Have you guys really seen Robert's Conan? His Conan (and why I believe they got Arnold back in the day) had like a trade mark 'Jaw'. This dude frankly doesnt have that and looks way to much like he has a 'Days of Our Lives' pretty boy face IMHO. Hell, Mickey has a more 'Conan' face than this dude. I'd rather watch Mickey be Conan. If this were a Video Game it'd be one destined for the $5 bargin bin before shooting has even started ...or the way I felt when that horrid recent GI JOE movie was annouced. (SORRY for the rant...Its just that I have been following this more or less since they were talking about it way back in like 2004 so I am extremely disappointed)
Yeah, she was a young-n. Sure grew up nicely. YES! The score of that first Conan movie is awesome; all of the fight scenes are goosebump-inducing.
I hear you, bro. I'm looking at it from the standpoint that given history, the studio might have stepped in and mandated a glam actor in the role. It's how guys like Toby ****ing Maguire end up being Spider-Man, and Michael Keaton Batman. At least Momoa has some action chops; if you saw him as Ronan on Stargate: Atlantis, you know he can play tough. No, he won't be the Barry Smith Conan of my youth; but maybe he can be the Neal Adams?
Momoa does pretty good at the, quiet I'll rip out your heart and eat it on a sandwich kind of guy, in the few stargate episodes I saw him in though I haven't seen any recent episodes. They'd have to do some Hollywood tricks on the hair. I don't want to see Conan sporting dreads. But yes Hollywood has done some bizarre casting. Real WTF situations. I'm going to stay hopeful that it will be done well. I would love to see them use Basil's score again. I gave away most of my comics a while back but couldn't part with a stack of these. No one can fully be the Conan of the comics or Howard's or Jordan's Conan but with a good script, cast and director it could be a fun flick.
I still have some of the large-formats; not much market for them, unfortunately. I had the Marvels, numbers 1-37...sold them all individually last year, and I'd hate to tell you what I got for them. It would make you kick yourself for giving yours away.
I can guess how well you made out on those. I sold some of the choicer ones many years ago. Still I could have made some cash off of the many that were left but they went to good home and to 2 good kids that love comics the way I used too. My wallet will never forgive me but it was worth it. Funny thing is the ones I kept including the Conan's I haven't read in years and may never again but I just couldn't part with them. Maybe one day when I'm less busy with life's stuff I'll dig them out and relive some good times.
