Isn't Hines Ward a 3rd string QB? or is it Antwan Randle El? anyway, i know its one of them and they're not inactive.
for those of you that are link nazi's, i heard this on nfl network today.
He was referring to the deactivated 3rd QB who is dressed and doesn't count as one of the 45 active players, but once put in the game, the first and second QBs are ineligible to come back into the game. Ward is a 3rd QB, but he's listed as a WR therefore already part of the active 45 players. IF Ben and whoever #2 is are injured, Ward is their guy, but him being entered as the QB doesn't preclude Ben or whoever they have as #2 from re-entering the game as he is a WR.

It does open a pandora's box as it pertains to media related issues. If Pat White is planned to run "wildcat" he will have to be listed as the number two quarterback. Also if Chad Henne is listed as the number three and he somehow arrives under center, Pennington cannot come back in the game. That is my understanding of the rule. :shifty:
If that occurs, neither Penny nor White (or whoever is the active #2 QB) can re-enter the game.

I thought this whole sh-bang got clarified in Seattle a couple of years ago. I remember the announcers were not too sure of their answer then neither.
He needed a clean up crew under the able after the Bucs drafted Freeman in the 1st round. He couldn't contain his excitement.
As I stated before, Nate Longshore possibly.
---
Former California quarterback Nate Longshore has opted to try out for the Miami Dolphins rather than the Cincinnati Bengals KFFL.com reports.
Undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft, Longshore has not been signed by the Dolphins, but will try out for the team in hopes of landing a contract.
Longshore (6-5, 230) threw for 6,783 yards and 51 touchdowns with 31 interceptions in four seasons with the Golden Bears. His best year came as a sophomore in 2006, when he racked up 3,021 yards and 24 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.
It's no surprise Longshore chose to try out for the Dolphins over the Bengals, as Cincinnati has already signed two undrafted quarterbacks in Todd Boeckman (Ohio State) and Billy Farris (Colorado State).
Longshore faces a tough battle to make the team even if signed. He's an extremely borderline pro prospect with a shaky collegiate career, and if the Dolphins view second-round pick Pat White as their third quarterback there simply won't be a spot available.

I don't understand how it can be explained repeatedly in this thread and people are still seemingly baffled.
This is only an issue if the Dolphins decide not to activate Pat White for a game, then they can designate him as a third QB and activate him if they need to at the expense of the other two.
He doesn't need to be listed as any specific quarterback number, nor does he need to be listed as another position, or anything like that. #3 QB is fine, just as long as he's on the active gameday roster.
No. If he's listed as our third quarterback and he goes in the game, then Pennington nor Henne can come into the game. It's the emergency quarterback rule so teams don't have to waste an active roster spot on a third quarterback.

no he doesn't.. they just put him on the active roster and play him.. we can have twenty quarterbacks on the active roster if we want. ONLY the "emergancy" designation restricts play. We don't "have" to use it. All this means is there will be one less special teamer on the gameday roster.. there is NO issue here at all.

» NFL'S "third-quarterback" rule -- sometimes misunderstood:
Seventeen years ago (1991) the third-quarterback rule was instituted to enable teams to have an emergency quarterback available who was not on the 45-man game-day active roster, since many teams, for strategic purposes, only carried two quarterbacks on their game-day roster.
Everybody thinks they understand the NFL's "third-quarterback" rule. But do they?
The rule states that if a third quarterback is inserted before the fourth quarter, a team's first two quarterbacks cannot be used in the game at any position.
Another aspect of the rule is sometimes misunderstood. It is a coach's decision as to whether a third quarterback will be used.
The active quarterbacks do not have to be injured for a team to use its third quarterback.

Well Ronnie Brown played Quarterback in the wildcat, and he was not inactive. I don't get the point of what Lombardi said? Pat white can be a WR and still play in the QB position.
he's not listed as a QB either. 1 and 2 can rotate in and out. 3 is an emergency player and if his designation is QB must be the last line of defense, so to speak. if the emergency QB is designated, for instance as a WR, then he can enter and leave as normal.

This is partially wrong. He can be listed as a QB, as long as he is not designated as the "emergency QB". However, he will be on the active roster of 45 players then.
This is different from the traditional method of having your 3rd string QB designated as an "emergency QB" and being listed as an inactive player, not counting on the active roster of 45. This is the case that the special substitution rules apply to.

So wouldn't we just list him at WR and then bypass the Emergency QB rule anyways?

It's ******* Golden.

Don't think of the emergency quarterback rule as something that hinders teams, it's only there to benefit them. It isn't something that we need to find a loophole for. Lombardi is pretty much an idiot for saying this.
Since Pat White will be playing, he won't be listed as an emergency quarterback. However he will still most likely be "officially" listed as a quarterback. It doesn't matter one bit if he is listed as a QB or a WR as long as he is on the active roster, which the "emergency QB" technically isn't.
I think the thing that people are getting caught up on is that they are assuming that the third quarterback is automatically the "emergency QB". This is not the case.
To break it down, into what our roster will actually look like:
Quarterback:
1. Chad Pennington
2. Chad Henne
3. Pat White
Wide Receiver:
1. Ginn
2. Camarillo
3. Bess
4. Turner
5. Hartline
All of these players take an active spot, so our QB/WR corps would take up 8/45 active roster spots.
A "normal" roster would look like this:
Quarterback:
1. Starter
2. Backup
3. "Emergency QB" - Inactive (Special substitution rules)
Wide Receiver:
1. WR1
2. WR2
3. WR3
4. WR4
5. WR5
This roster's QB/WR corps would take up 7/45 active roster spots, because the "Emergency QB" is considered inactive.
This active roster spot is absolutely the only difference. We will simply have one less active player at another position, such as linebacker, or perhaps we will only carry 4 active WR's.
So, in answer to your question, it doesn't matter if White is listed as a WR or a QB. I have no doubt that he will officially be listed as a QB though.
This is my understanding of the rule. Hopefully someone can confirm.
lombardi is an ass.. not only did he make up the Ronnie Brown trade stuff, now he's too stupid to understand a very simple rule.

London can dress and play special teams if Henne is #3 so Henne could be #3 some games even though he is our #2
Well after 15 years Bettman lets hockey come back to Winnipeg. Thanks for wasting 15 years

disagree
Henne is our #2 but might might be our #3 on game day
Last year he was our #2 all year and did not come in before the 4th quarter for 16 games
I would rather have an extra player for special teams then Henne #2.
If Penny gets injured you play Henne and White can't play

to each their own.. we will see how it plays out. :hi5:

Ronnie Brown is not listed as a QB, therefore he is eligible to play either position any time because he is listed as one of the starting 45. if he was listed as the third or emergency QB then that would not be able to happen. He would be limited in his ability to enter the game, more specifically; QB 1 + 2 would not be able to re-enter.

 Emergency QB and third QB are not the same.
Is this for real?
After 3d string QB enters the game, the first two can not come ONLY IF HE WAS INACTIVE but he will be. Like Marty said, our entire roster can be filled with QBs. As long as they are active, that is not a problem. Cant believe this is being argued over.

"2k5 wrote:

Ronnie Brown is a RUNNING BACK and part of the 45 man active roster and therefore eligible to take snaps as a QB without issue. you want to split hairs about emergency vs third QB when my answer is about a running back then fine.:pity: We could have just two QB's on the roster and designate Pat White a WR and part of the active roster and he could be our third QB and use him if needed without issue as well. I know we will designate all three as QB and we may or may not carry all on the active roster or designate one as "emergency" in the traditional manor. If my use of "third" in a vague way as apposed to specifically stating "emergency" is the issue then by all means, correct away. That was not my point.
"cnc66 wrote:
All three qb's will be active.. y'all are making issues where none will exist. If Pat's only skillset was qb, he would likely be designated the "emergancy qb" but because we will be using him in "other" roles, he will be active and we will simply ignore the "emergancy qb" designation and not use it. Somewher, an extra lineman or wr will not suit up, no big deal, guys that far down rarely play anyway unless it's ST's..
Or Henne will be the emergency QB, Pat finishes the game up and Henne gets the other starts
and When CP is hobbled but still playing all 3 are active and we deactivate one the 17 TE's we will carry
3rd QB versus Emergency QB deal aside: doesn't there have to be someone listed under the QB position on the roster on the field for a non special teams offensive play - hence why we had Chad out there all the time?
"evz wrote:

We keep Chad out there to achieve the defensive personel package we want to see.

As of now he is listed at QB, which is fine. You would make the #5 WR inactive because I would imagine if they're in a 5 Wide, Pat is going to be one of the WR. At the same time make no mistake, the kid is a QB.

Lombardi is wrong. Since White is a QB/WR, he could be listed as a like a 4th or 5th or even 6th WR and play Qb every other snap between Henne and Chad if we wanted.
