Mike Sherman confident in Miami Dolphins’ offensive pieces

listening to Sherman for the 30 minutes the Dolphins put their new offensive coordinator in front of the media last week was wonderful in that it also offered a peek into someone I didn’t expect:
A coach brimming with confidence.
A coach unafraid of setting the biggest goal as his goal.
Sherman comes to Miami as new coach Joe Philbin’s offensive coordinator, which is something of a turn in fortunes because Sherman was once head coach in Green Bay and Philbin was one of his assistants.
This is good because this speaks to their maturity and character, that they won't let their egos get in the way.
The change is a non-issue for Sherman because he has his sights set on more lofty, much more important matters.
Like, oh, winning a Super Bowl.

In short, Sherman thinks Miami can do just that and not necessarily four or five years from now. He thinks only a year or so into the future and after meeting with Philbin and surveying the Dolphins landscape, Sherman came away convinced the Super Bowl is within reach fairly soon.
“I watched the tape, and I don’t think we’re that far away. We’re missing a couple of pieces here and there but I think we have a chance to build upon what Jeff Ireland has put together here. After watching the tape, I think we get a couple of pieces here and there, I think we’ll be close.”
But Sherman’s words felt differently because he wasn’t boasting, wasn’t blowing smoke. One gets the feeling he really believes what he’s saying. This guy has actually studied his offense and sees a day it can play in the Super Bowl. We’ll take the good that works here and eliminate the stuff we don’t think works.”
he’s going to unveil some newly developed players who have previously been left on the roster’s margins.
“I think there’s some hidden players, too, that because of injury or whatever didn’t come and show up as much as what I would hope in the future,” he said. “I think there are playmakers on the team that are obvious ones. But I think there are other guys that might step up and fill those roles as well.”
Sherman talked of “hidden talent” on the offensive line and other positions without naming names because he hasn’t announced to the players themselves that they’re talent debut is coming.
This was probably my favorite coaching hire of the off-season. I'm really excited to see what he can bring to the team. I think that he and Philbin knowing each other and having worked together is going to be a big plus for us. I'm sure they're going to be able to work together. This could be partially just coach-speak, but he seems real sincere and I have a feeling that this is going to be a great match. We shall see. :up:

rafaelforum_veteranThe focus on the QB is proper since that is far and away the most important piece, but I agree that the focus on #2 WRs and OL is misplaced. Those are lower priority positions than S and pass rusher.

Good coaching is getting the scheme together and I’ve done enough things, Joe’s done enough things that would allow us the opportunity to put something together that fits our players’ skill level the best. Some of the things they did in Green Bay may not fit here. Some of the things I’ve done may not fit.

Id much rather see a pass rusher drafted than a quaterback in the first round.
The Dolphins are the softest team in the NFL. Tua hater starting 12/11/22.

Pads, this isn't a piece about all of the team needs. There are and have been and will be many more threads to discuss team needs. This happens to be a piece about our NEW OFFENSIVE Coordinator and his thoughts on the future and potential of the OFFENSE going forward and taking it to the next level. Is it just coach speak?...maybe. Only time will tell, but it sounds good for now, so put that in your pipe and smoke it.... :pointlol:

our offense is pure trash and our defense is average. obviously the focus should be not being so horrible on offense. the stats about 13 points and blah blah blah...are you serious? the only game our offense didn't look inept was week one vs new england.

I do agree there is plenty of room for improvment, especially in the points department.

When the games counted (i.e., before they were 0-7), the Dolphins had 6 games in a row in which they scored 17 points or less. I simply don't think that they can put much stock in how they played once they were eliminated. It's easier to play loose and free and gamble a bit more on offense because they have nothing to lose. So, they play differently. It wasn't the defense that eliminated the Dolphins from contention; it was the offense early on.
The offense certainly improved, nevertheless. But, there are still needs: QB, OL and another WR. You simply need the best players you can get that can make big plays.
Obviously, there are D needs as well: Another pass rusher, a S, a better pass defense overall. But, the QB position and another big play offensive weapon would go a long way on this team. I'm just hoping GB lets their backup QB go and that we can sign him to compete with Moore. And, if we can sign a WR - that would let us go into the draft with a lot less pressure and just go BPA in round 1 (or even trade down if our guy is not there).
An an explosive offense is simply vital unless you are coached by a man named Harbaugh (even at that, they did not make the SB). Miami still does not have that. And, the more explosive and successful the offense is, that can instill more fight in the defense. But, both sides of the ball need shoring up in similar fashion.
gunn34New MemberI don't think he sounds like Henning 2.0. I think Shula started that thought process decades ago. Look at what the players you have can do and build around that.
