Whether it was in college or in the pros, Frerotte called Beckwith before and after every big game. Frerotte, who was nicknamed "Pit Bull" by his Bills teammates, became known for painting his face on gameday.
"He called me before the Super Bowl in Minnesota (XXVI against the Redskins)," Beckwith said. "He told me that the commissioner told him that if he painted his face, he was going to get fined. He asked me, 'Should I paint my face?' And, I said, 'I'd do it just for publicity,' and I think he did it.
"He sure was a character."
There was a gentler side to Frerotte, and that's one of the ways Beckwith will remember him.
"He was always willing to work with kids," Beckwith said. "He'd bend over backward to help kids."
