Not sure how much I like Philbin leaving that kind of decision to the player. Had the player decided not to to it, we would of been ****ed... Unless I'm misunderstanding and Philbin wanted him to do it, but let the final decision be made on the field. In which, fine. To me, that decision was great and ballsy decision. A little disappointing Phil bin didn't make it...

Trent Dilfer was just on MNF talking about how impressed he is with Ryan Tannehill's conflict management. Making subtle movements in the pocket in the face of pressure and delivering the ball. Talked about him maybe deserving ROTY. Always nice to hear good things, as usual.

I've said this before, if the HC shows faith in the players, they will reward you and make plays for you. It was a good calculated risk to take at that point.

Philbin doesn't coach scared like some before him. It's great when a HC puts his nut sack out there.

 

I could be wrong, but I think generally what happens with fake punts is that the coaching staff might decide they see something that makes it advantageous, practice it, and then when it comes down to a certain down/distance/circumstance and opposing alignment a player makes the decision.

 

I think you are misunderstanding... Philbin/coaching staff put in the call for the fake punt, but only based on what Clemons reads at the line of scrimmage (like Tannehill being able to check out of a play call based on a defense)... Clemons had the option to cancel the fake punt, and actually punt it away, but eventhough the Rams gave a different look than every other punt in the game, decided to go for it anyway...

 

It's needed to be successful if the Rams stacked the box a run would have not worked and the coach would have had to burn a time out to abort the attempt. With the player in charge of the decision it allows the attempt if possible without wasting a time out if the defense stacks up to plug a run.

 

Plus there's no tells leading up to the play.

 

You bet big, you win big. No one (fans or coaches) has a feel for a game like the actual players do. When you micro-manage like some of our previous coaches, players are stripped of their potential.

 

Quite a departure from the Sparano/Henning rule of not allowing Henne to even AUDIBLE.

 

In retrospect, they were probably correct.

You're right, which makes the Henne tenure more pitiful, not less pitiful.
