When I first started looking into Ryan Tannehill, I went in with a very skeptical eye. My initial view of him was that he was just another athlete playing quarterback. I had seen the highlights of his running ability and knew he was a receiver prior to moving to quarterback. What I learned after evaluating him is that I had seriously misjudged him with my preconceived notions about his game. Let's get rid of one of the common misconceptions about Ryan Tannehill first and foremost. This is not a wide receiver converted to a quarterback. This guy is a natural quarterback who was a good enough athlete to convert to WR in his first two seasons at TAMU and excel that position. Guys who are converts and new to the quarterback position simply do not possess the feel for the pocket this guy has. He feels pressure very well. He makes subtle movements in the pocket to avoid pressure and give himself a throwing lane. When he has to, he will break out of the pocket with his eye level up. You rarely see this guy break the pocket to run, and when he does run, it's typically his last option. He throws very well on the run also, possibly the best passer on the move in this draft. This is one of the few quarterbacks I saw at the college level who could throw a 10-15 yard out pattern from the opposite hash mark. He's got good arm strength and can spin it. He's better at throwing the out breaking routes than the in breaking routes at this point. He anticipates those routes better. He's better at throwing shorter, timing routes at this point than attacking the field vertically. He does a good job of looking off the safety most of the time, but at times, he can get caught into staying with the plan he had based on his presnap reads when the defense changes mid course.
Funny, but Ireland doesn't seem like someone I would want to interview with... He must put a lot of pressure on these kids to see how they react.
they did the right thing Tannehill @ 8 they had to take the shot if he had legitimate franchise potential now we get back to that "easy" draft BPA @2,3,3 & 4 should be a quality prospect @ OL, WR,TE or Defender that could fall to us early on BPA @2,3,3 & 4 this year will be about coaching2012 is the year of the coach
"Rated him as one of the top 5 quarterbacks in terms of athleticism combined with arm talent to come out in past 5 years." Over the past 5 years I had Tannehill rated behind only Newton, Bradford and Stafford. If I include this year (6 years), I also had him behind Luck, but not behind RG3.
I hope your ratings are underrating him I think he looks good in highlight reels, and I think the consistent system works in our and his advantage. Curious what the real plan for week 1 ends up being...
Yes, I don't like RG3's lack of pocket awareness. He takes a lot of hits in the pocket when he just doesn't sense it closing in on him. I'm also leery of how little read responsibility he had in Baylor's offense. I see Tannehill as having far better pocket awareness and far more experience reading defenses. I think RG3 is a better timing passer and more accurate on long passes. RG3 is faster, but not necessarily a better runner. In all other areas they're about even. I see pocket awareness and reading defenses as more important. RG3 may be able to learn to read defenses, in fact, I expect he will, but until he does that is a huge bust factor. IMO timing passing is one of the easier things to learn. Actually, I would say that Tannehill is already pretty good at it. It's just that RG3 was great at it. I think fans tend to get enamored with rhythm passers. It looks good, but IMO what a QB does when things break down is far more telling. Tannehill is more adept at handling pressure. He senses it more naturally. To me, that is far more predictive of success. I said all this before when people were talking about trading up (before Washington did).
I understand RG3 is far from perfect but certainly you must know you might be the only person on the planet that rates Tannehill over RG3
I doubt it. I've been evaluating players for more than a couple of decades now, a couple of those years I did it for a living. What I find is that evaluations among individual scouts differ wildly from the homogenous media opinion that gets out to the fans.
Nope, I'm right there with him. It's not that I rate Tannehill supremely high, I just firmly believe RGIII is being highly overrated.
