I dunno about that though. What we really need at LB is someone who can both put pressure on the LB and not look silly in coverage or against the run sideline to sideline. Rey has the first part but not necessarily the 2nd.
Watching that video of him on the sled was making me think of the comments Jason Ferguson made about Donald Thomas and how he plays Heavy. When you see a picture of Cody he looks kind of soft, but definitely does not seem to play that way.
Check out the video I posted of him taking on three blockers and still making the play in the backfield. On that play, those three blockers were the sled.
I don't know how he looked today but i've seen him take on one two many FB and lose to think he should be a top 20 pick.
I'm wondering where the team stands on Quentin Moses and Mark Washington at OLB. If Crowder is re-signed, we still have Oyodele possibly at OLB with Torbor in the middle, whom I like as well. The Roth experiment will play itself out. So with all of the above possibilities, that still leaves me with Malcolm Jenkins, Vontae Davis, and William Moore. A lot of good points have been made re: Maulaluga, but can that lack of instincts be coached up? Beats me. Michael Johnson if he slips. And George Selvie maybe if he turns it on. But my God, why not attack the obvious deficiencies and draft a Jenkins or Moore? Or Davis? That big safety from USC- not so sure. Triangle numbers are just numbers, ask Josh Barrett about that one. Long shot if he's the absolute real deal- Alex Mack. Then let Smiley, Satele, and Thomas duke it out. I feel a little hesitant about the OL part, but so be it.
If he flat out dominates the rest of the way playing at a smaller school, has killer combine numbers and all star game performances, et al. I'm not writing a thesis paper here, just throwing out the name of a prospect- and he's a junior for that matter. If he's value, he's value. I'm still not big on drafting another DE/OLB convert guy. And as long as we're on the subject, I'm curious as to your thoughts of the Roth/Moses/Washington situation at OLB.
Jim, I'm not sure there IS a Roth/Moses/Washington situation. I don't think the FO are that enamoured with Matt Roth. When all's said and done, he's a pretty average player. Neither Moses or Washington have done anything that would lead me to believe that they have a future making plays as Miami Dolphins. Selvie flat out dominates wherever he goes. Hard not to love George for the every down effort he gives.
Good points all. Someone has to fill that hole, and not to harp too much on Michael Johnson, but lack of production is a hard thing to swallow. So if Selvie, Moore, and Jenkins (not a favorite of yours, I know) are there, who do you take? Let's throw in Johnson, too. Not to be a downer, but I feel really underwhelmed by next year's draft.
Don't be down about the draft. There are some terrific players in there. Con, Chris and I already have our man crush targets, we have some pretty solid potential picks for Miami. There's good players out there. Real good.
Who would you be looking at for interior OL say rounds 3 or 4 through round 7 Boom? I only mention those rounds as I do not think the front office would look to take any OL until the later rounds of next years draft.
Really, really think Brian Cushing is a possibility at the SAM taking over for Matt Roth. As you wrote, I'm not sure he's a star in that role, but you need hosses like Carl Banks, taken 3rd overall by Young & Parcells in '84, or Bobby Carpenter, initially slotted when the Boys picked him 22nd a few years back at the SAM. Takes away attention from a Joey Porter or Lawrence Taylor, is good in coverage, has the flippin' hips, can chase the quarterback, and work his way into the backfield. I think with the rest of our schedule, it's a valid assumption that we'll be working in the 12-20 range, and he has to be a strong possibility, considering the impact he makes, does he not ? One guy whom I don't see fitting in our defense at all is Rey Rey. When you can basically re-sign a poor man's version of him in Channing Crowder, the same wind up toy of a linebacker that chases, and guesses wrong, why would you pick him ? Just re-sign Crowder, and pick an entirely different animal in Sintim or Cushing in the draft.
One guy who I want is Greg Hardy from Ole Miss. I see this guy as superior players to Selvie and Michael Johnson
Cushing is overrated IMO. The guys who I like are... 1)Greg Hardy 2) Rey Maualuga 3) Aaron Curry 4) Malcolm Jenkins 5) Sen'Derrick Marks.. I don't think we have a chance at getting Vontae Davis or he would be on that list
Swap out Maualaga with Sintim or Curry and I would be happy. I still like the idea of Mach Harris in the 2nd round for CB.
But if that were the case, he's surely "injury prone" rather than "overrated"? Someone who is overrated is someone who the media hype up, but for whom the reality is that they aren't half as good as their clippings might indicate. Someone who is injury prone, is someone 'prone' to being injured. I can buy that about Brian Cushing, the the "he's overrated" tag simply won't wash with me because it has absolutely no basis in fact.
macho harris is too short. we need a guy big enough to cover guys like andre johnson and brandon marshall
I don't think he is overrated. Cushing is pretty damn good its just what scares me is that if he can't stay healthy at the college level how is he going to be healthy in the pros?
Harris is listed as 6' 0" 196lbs in the Hokies media guide. Granted I know sometimes Colleges will fudge a bit on a guys height or weight but I have watched Harris play for 3 years especially against the Hurricanes and he looks to be every bit of 6'
