This is really difficult for me as we are very close.
Hopefully everything will work out alright.

i imagine it is very tough. i feel a bit robbed having never been able to bond with a grandfather as an adult. my paternal grandfather died when i 2 years old.
my maternal grandfather died in his house the night my family arrived for a week's vacation in miami when i was 11. we were all witness to it. he collapsed in the bathroom from a heart attack and died a few minutes later. i can vividly recall my older sisters trying to give him CPR in the house and then later standing at the edge of the front lawn looking down the street waving at the ambulance to hurry. still makes me sad to think of it

Yeah, I didn't think he would put a comedic sketch in a post about his grandfather being terminally ill...but I didn't wanna say anything and possibly look like a douche lol

what was funniest about it was that it has the ring of truth to it

I know this isn't going to help, but all you can do is do the best you can for him while he's here, then ruck up, chamber a round and drive on. There's not really much else to do. I've had to walk soldiers through death on a number of occasions, and, the only thing that is certain is that "forward" brings a chance of success. "Backward" is death and failure. Move forward.
