See an ortho asap. Nobody here can accurately tell you what exactly is going on there.

That said, popular consensus seems to be that fish oils are good for the joints. Also, swimming would be a good way to shed weight with low impact on the knees.

    Have you tried compression?

Bah, if this was a poster I respected less I could make a knee pads joke...

But, since its you, all I can do is echo advising to see your doctor and wish you good health. So, see your doctor, and I hope you feel better.

Edit: Also if you don't like the answers that a traditional doctor gives, try a naturopath. I don't know what the licensure is like in your state so be sure to investigate. Oregon's is strict, so it may be a more viable option here than were you are.

I would try seeing a doctor like some mentioned. I would also try light to moderate intensity level stretching depending in your fitness level to see if you could pinpoint where the pain was. Is the pain in front of the knee where it's more likely to be something like arthritis or is in the back of the knee where it could be ligament or muscle related? Or on the sides where it could be bone or ligaments? In order to help the doctor help you give him an idea of where the pain is mostly coming from. I know you're a military guy so I'm sure there's a degree of mental toughness but remember there's a difference between terms like pain and discomfort.

  7. All kidding aside not only would I look for a knee specialist I would specifically look for ones that work on them alot. Maybe look in Colorado where they see skiers alot or a good nfl sports medicine doctor. I do know of one in Texas that a friend of mine swears by. If you want I can get you the info. She was referee to this guy by an nfl player and she says he changed her life but he did replace both her knees. She had bone on bone pain.
