This is how I'm projecting our current players for the 3-4. Anyone think I have some of these players playing the wrong position? 91 Holliday, Vonnie DE 94 Starks, Randy DE 90 Wright, Rodrique DE 75 Robinson, Derreck DE 95 Ferguson, Jason NT 96 Soliai, Paul NT / DE 60 Fifita, Steve NT 99 Taylor, Jason OLB 55 Porter, Joey OLB 74 Moses, Quentin OLB 53 Wright, Abraham OLB 98 Roth, Matt OLB / DE 4-3 alignment 56 Anderson, Charlie OLB 93 Ninkovich, Rob OLB 43 Glymph, Junior OLB 51 Washington, Mark OLB 57 Church, Marcello OLB 59 Torbor, Reggie ILB 52 Crowder, Channing ILB 58 Smith, Kelvin ILB 50 Miles, Edmond ILB
I'm not sure how Roth is going to fit in. The guy disappeared starting in the 4-3. I don't know how well he would play DE in the 3-4. Also question marks if he can even play OLB.
I was debating Matt Roth but I dont think he's agile enough to move to OLB. I think he's gotta bulk up to 285 or 290 somehow.
I think the plan with Starks is to switch him back and forth between DE and NT til he gets a little more experience, then start him in the NT position full-time next year. I think R. Wright plays the same position(s) VH does, DE and UT-in the "Hybrid".
Here is how I see it (swapping Chris Long for Jason Taylor but not including any other draft selections): Starks/Wright/Roth Ferguson/Starks/Soliai/Fifita Holliday/Wright Long/Ninkovich/Wright Torbor/Smith Crowder Porter/Moses
That roster's not going to scare anyone. There's almost no starters on that defensive front seven list...For sure the Dolphins are drafting defense heavy in this draft. They almost have to. Look for them also to add players during the 1st cuts, by necessity
I think you have it about right if you make the changes discuess. Rod Wright is definitely a DE in this alignment and Ed Miles should be swapped for Abe Wright. Also, keep the possibility in mind that Paul Soliai takes snaps at DE. Another thing, people are wondering where Matt Roth fits into this scheme. If it were me, I would make him a 4-3 DE specialist, like Jarvis Green with the Patriots. You're going to be using 4-DL alignments on a regular basis even if you're running the base 3-4. Matt Roth comes into play on those occasions, able to come in and rush the passer as a DE or even as a DT.
Oddly enough in the latest ESPN the MAG Todd McShay is talking about he top 5 of the draft and says something along the lines of Channing Crowder being Bill Parcells new favorite player.
I think you may be right on Roth though I wonder if Parcells will keep him around when someone like Moses may be able to do the same job while having the ability to transition better to a standard 3-4 alignment
Roth would have to lose quite a bit of weight to do that. I think CK's on the ball with the assessment that Roth could be the 4-3 specialist. At worst he'll be the last 3-4 DE playing at around 280 lbs.
Yeah even though nobody talks about I could see us dealing him on draft day to a 4-3 team since it seems he's right in between of what we need
You get almost no value doing so. It'll be a sixth round pick and that's pointless. Roth is a better player than that. I'd even consider having him bulk up again to play pass rush 3-4 DE.
Okay, one thing that no one has asked about. You have Soliai listed as NT/DE. My question is, is it really feasible that Soliai would spend any time at all at DE? The last I read he was like 344# and kind of slow.
either bulk up or lose weight or like CK said have as a situational 4-3 specialist. He's the hardest guy to figure out where he fits
I went with CK's suggestion on that. I personally think he's going to be a NT. He seems to have the right size for it. There is so little information coming out Parcellsland regarding our players its tough to fuigure out what the plans are
Yeah right now they're playing it close aren't they? Hopefully after the draft they'll open up and give us some information. To be honest about Soliai, I like the guy alot. My thoughts are that at this point he would best off at DT in a 4-3. That way he has another DT right next to him for support. Larry Chester, for instance was a slug, but with Bowens playing next to him, he got the job done.
One way or another we'll know a hell of a lot more after the draft. I doubt we hear anything from the office till TC, but we'll be able to see the big picture a lot more clearly after we get our new pieces in the draft. It just can't get here soon enough. We're all bored out of our minds waiting for new info.
I have tremendous hopes for Soliai. People forget how difficult it is to come in out of college and play at a good level on the line, especially if you have poor technique and stamina problems. I'm really hoping he takes a huge leap this year. You may be right on the 4-3 but it is what it is and I hope he's ready for the challenge
That's exactly what I said when we originally drafted him. The guy I actually wanted was Khalif Barnes or Dan Cody back then not because of Roth but because of the system we were planning on running.
Everytime I see Roth I just figure that the lights are on but nobodies home. We should start a collection pool for him on this site : "Donations to buy Matt Roth a years membership to Publix Sub Shop and a few books."
Depending on who we draft, I could actually see Porter move inside. You are correct, we are weak on ILB after losing Zach. Good list overall though.
Agree 100% Lets not forget people, we had some horrible coachign last year. Our top tier Dline went to crap within an offseason. How was a rookie supposed to learn or improve, when a top-tier Dline regressed so far it was in last place, after being at the top a year before? Some Parcells/Sparano toughness will do him some good. None of that nancy stuff Cam was running last year.
