Sup everybody. Just got a brand new Sony Vaio FW. I have about 40 gigs of music on my old computer that I'm trying to find the easiest solution to transfer over to my new one. If it helps, I have all of the songs on my iPod but there's no option to transfer everything over.
My main concern is keeping all of my folders in tact; I'm very organized with my music.
Any help would be appreciated!

FYI, I'm somewhat tech-illiterate.

I would explain it to you but I can only mount hard drives in Linux
I can explain how you hook it up physically but not how you mount it inside the Operating System.
edit:
you have to open your case and see if there's a spot to plug your hard drive in. There should be. How old is the old computer?High Definition likes this. -
there are some programs that let you save songs from your ipod onto your computer.
but if you want to be organized about it you probably have to buy those usb drivesHigh Definition likes this. -
Very old. I'm wondering if an external hard drive would do the trick? I have all of my music folders organized into one big folder, so I can transfer it to the external hard drive, then rip it from there onto the new computer, correct? I don't mind buying one, but I'd probably go for the cheapest since it's unlikely I'd ever use it again.
I just don't want to buy something that won't work. :( -
alternatively if you have the install disc for your operating system a TB internal HD costs 88 dollars (might get myself one)

here are some externals for fairly cheap

get yourself a crossover ethernet cord, and get someone to set up an ad hoc network between the two.
do you have a network at home? A router? Switch? tht would help and you wouldn't need a crossover cable.
but a crossover cable is like 3 bucks or so. go to any well stocked computer store or ebay. you can even try the easy transfer wizard in vista if that's what you have. -
External Hard drive is what you need.

Just plug it into your old computer, put as much of your music on it as you can, plug it into your new computer and upload onto your new hard drive; wash, rinse, repeat. Too easy.
Need more detailed than that? You probably have your music organized like this, right? "My Music">"artist">"album"
All you do is open "my music", drag whatever artists' folders you want onto your flash drive, and when you upload to your new computer, put them in your new "my music" folder.
Need more detailed still? Go take a computer class! -
I recently purchased an external HD 500GB and copied and pasted my entire collection of pictures, music and porn, almost 125GB worth, took about 2 1/2 hours to transfer the data.

You'd think that because midgets are half the size of normal people that it would cut the file size in half too. Guess not.opfinistic likes this. -
