-- Dolphins Defense Likely to Use More 2-LB Defenses -- Sat Oct 9, 2010 --from FFMastermind.com With their next three games against Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati — all teams with good quarterbacks — we may have seen a preview of how the Dolphins will handle them on defense. According to PFW, the Dolphins had just two defensive linemen on the field on passing downs in their Week 4 game against the Patriots, dropping as many as eight players into coverage at times, and being selective with their blitzes. One daily observer called it a "smart approach," and with its success against New England, we could see it again.
Ya, we've been using a 2 DL nickle package since the beginning this summer. Its even in our Madden playbook...
I knew we had fiddled with this but had no idea they were going to add this to our pkg. I was really kinda shocked when I read this, because a well planned draw play would spell disaster with only two DL's.
2004, the Patriots used to run 0 DL's on passings downs. They would have either 3LB's/8DB' or 4&7. The QB and OL had no clue who was rushing and who was dropping into coverage.
Not so much, the 2 DT's hold the middle of the oline, the speed of the 9 coverage men take care of screens and dump off passes, Nolan and several others have run this scheme for years. When the Rams were still in LA Fritz Shurmur used to call it "the Eagle".
Well, its usually 2 DL And 4 LBs. Its a 3-4, w/o the NT... and our DEs play 3tech. Starks and Odrick are the 2 they have slated for that b/c of their penetrating and pass rush ability...
Wow you mean the same d that helped us give up 40+ points? Wow this should be fun Yes I know special teams cost us but the d in the second half wasn't stellar either
We used to use this defense against the Bills and the Kelly K Gun back in the early 90's. Nothing new really just a hybrid defense that is used to stop the pass. The loaded nickel is what I always called it.
I remember that as well. We now have the advantage of the versatility of our LB's. Wake and Misi can cnvert this D to a four man line in a heartbeat. Anyone know which LB's are in this D? I can watch the recording but, have been holding off, not wanting to get pissed again.
And it generally immediately results in them getting gashed by a runningback, That happened like 3 times in the Dolphins/Patriots MNF game in 2004.
Something tells me this is the defense we would run out when the offense is NOT lined up in a Pro Set.....or I.
This really isn't super noteworthy, btw. It's not any sort of weird cloud nickel package... It's the normal 4-2 Nickel package, except that the two outside defenders(Who in a 3-4 defense are generally OLBs in 3-point stances) stay standing up and are more likely to drop into coverage. It's basically the core "zone blitz" element of the Steelers defense. There is more flexibility on who you can bring.
21 of the 41 points came directly off the ST play. Not saying the care for the concept BUT lets call a spade a spade.
