Says the cap hit on the tag isn't something the Dolphins want. He will either sign a multiyear deal or leave.
Gotta find a way to get a deal done

Cant let him leave, if they do the Secondary is as much a problem as the OL if not more.....
Factoring in Clemons leaving too...MIASportsFan likes this. -

This offseason is the Curse of the Ginger time -
I'd be okay with letting Grimes walk. There's ample opportunity in free agency to get some quality players. Sam Shields, Tarell Brown, Aqib Talib, re-sign Nolan Carroll, etc.
-
-
Hopefully they lock him up to a mutually beneficial deal, he was super solid. Impress me Hickey get it done.

In my opinion at his age the tag makes no sense. You don't want to make a deal next year where hes another year older snd less effective at the end.
You either do it now or use the money on players you intend to be here a whiledjphinfan and MIASportsFan like this. -
Can't let a great player like him go.
-
Dolphins might not want to franchise tag him, but if they don't reach a long term deal with him here shortly, you can bet your *** they WILL tag him. This is just contract negotiation talk, where both sides are saying they don't want to do one thing .

For the amount the tag would cost us for Grimes we could sign a 26 year old Sam Shields and a guard.
sign Shields, sign Carroll, we all saw the improvement he made this year, he was 4th best as far as the percentage of passes thrown on him being completed, 9th worst QB rating when throwing to his guy. And then draft another corner.
also one thing to keep in mind with Grimes, just because he hits free agency doesn't mean we can't sign him -
And then there's Jamar Taylor, who's a bit of a wildcard in all this. What the coaching staff truly thinks of him could go a long way towards deciding the extent to which they pursue Grimes. -

Believe it or not there are other fish in the sea. Just sayin. If the Dolphins had signed Keenan Lewis last year (5 years, $25.55 million total, $10.5 million guaranteed) then they probably would have gotten JUST as good a player as Grimes, except he'd be 28 years old in 2014 instead of 31 years old.
Remember this post:
As I said he's not the only fish in the sea. You have guys like Sam Shields, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Alterraun Verner, Brandon Browner and Walter Thurmond all available. I'm sure Sam Shields would love to come back here. Another guy I need to watch on tape on but who intrigues me a lot is Trumaine McBride who really caught fire and came out of nowhere with the Giants this year, putting up some great metrics.
I think given that it's pretty unpleasant to have to pay Grimes $11.3 million just for one season, and at the same time knowing that the age studies point to 2015 as being a year where Grimes' level of play drops off quite a bit, is enough to have you saying that if Grimes doesn't play ball with you in negotiations then you can risk losing him. -
-
I say that because I feel like I have a good idea of what is the right thing to do, so if they don't, which is what they usually do, it will suck for me with this new GM.
I've got brent grimes last year as the best corner play I've seen since Sams best year, however, I prefer grimes game because he's not afraid to tackle. -
No one should be broken hearted about losing a CB who will be 31 to free agency.
It appears very likely Alterraun Verner is going to hit the open market. This is the kind of player that you do overpay.
Verner has the potential to become elite. Right now I would call him very good. He is also a brilliant guy, honor student majored in math and applied science, is an outstanding leader who has actually done motivational speaking.
This is exactly the type of player the Dolphins need to improve their locker room.
Give him a six year deal and draft CB Ross cockrell, who is a Verner clone and CB will be a rock solid position for many years. Sign Peanut Tillman to play safety and then watch the Dolphins secondary lead the NFL turnovers for the next several years. -

I'd be shocked if we can sign any significant players to long term deals here. With the offseason we've had and the lame duck coaching situation I don't see why anyone with options would come here. We will have to overpay for any bigtime free agents and thats not worth it. I hope I'm wrong.

Zach Strief is another guy they could look at. He was team captain and union rep for the Saints. His reputation is the antithesis of Incognito's. Zach was PFF's #1 rated RT in the league last year. He was a late bloomer who really hasn't seen that much action for a guy 31.
With the salary cap increase Eugene Monroe might not hit free agency, but if he does, the Dolphins should not be out bid. This is another guy you can overpay. Elite character and durability along with his obvious talent. -
i think we tag him

Brent Grimes "optimistic" about multi-year deal.

Cool. I would like it for the right numbers.

have to get the deal done.

Which is why I've mostly withdrawn from this offseason, no real news, just bull****
Did hear they want to try and sign Soliai prior to FA, would love to get that one done.
Big Paul gives us tremendous 3-4/4-3 flexibility
Suspect Grimes really wants to hit the open market, he's kinda been screwed by the "franchise" tag in his career, it would look like "franchise tag=ACL yr=Trade=Franchise tag" -
PFF rated Grimes the #2 corner in the league last year, so there's no way that Miami lets him walk. I think the #3 corner is more likely to find a new team though, that's Vontae Davis.
Also, there was a report earlier tonight that Grimes agent has been talking to the Fins all day and they're close on a multi-year deal. Neither side wants to see him walk.77FinFan likes this. -

Yup, 3 yrs sounds about right. Sign him, he earned a new deal.
-
So we have until tomorrow? I don't think we tag him.
-
I'm taking the silence on the matter as encouraging. Neither side seems to be talking to the media one way or the other and you have to think that means negotiations are happening like normal.

Shields is expected to hit Free Agency. That could alter our negotiations with Grimes.
