NFL security had Dolphins cornerback Will Allen on its radar before he allegedly pulled a gun on a man in a dispute over money May 16 in Davie, a source with knowledge of the investigation said Tuesday.
The NFL had been alerted when a suspicious Detroit bank told the league of Allen's involvement in a large amount of money being wired to South Florida, the source said.

This doesn't sound to promising... Makes you wonder what was really going on here.

Under certain circumstances a gambling issue could get someone a life time ban. -
I remember telling my friend that our secondary couldn't get any worse, well, surprisingly, it could get worse.

We may yet see a trade for Lito Sheppard, after all, y'know?
I really do think the safety position(s) are okay, though. -

Yep... corner situation is solid, guys. No need to take advantage of the deepest corner draft in a decade.
Jeff Ireland just screwed up as badly as Will Allen. -
You may be annoyed that Ireland didn;t do what you wanted in the draft, but he made a choice to go with the O and D line because he probably feels they are more critical to build first. He'll address the secondary next year, for sure (or I'll be annoyed too).
That said, how in Hades can we say he SHOULD have taken into account that Will Allen would pull a gun on someone for gambling debts.
No one saw that coming.... thus he is no more wrong today than he was right after the draft, imo. This particular event is not an indictment of Jeff Ireland's poor planning skills.
Attack him for his draft philosophy if you must, but I think this goes too far.
I don;t feel like debating draft philosophies, but I can't disagree with you being annoyed that we didn;t get any DBs in a DB-deep draft. That said, next year's crop of Safeties looks great and the CB crop looks at least good.

He ignored the deepest position in the draft, and an incident occurred which threatens to blacken that decision. Sorry, but that's a fair assessment, and you're not going to tell me otherwise. (An unfair assessment would read something like this: "Fire Jeff Ireland, he sucks.") -

Maybe it's just me but don't you guys find it somewhat dubious that a bank would contact the league about a suspicious transaction? Whatever happened to confidentiality? I'm not really familiar with the financial laws in the US but if I bank pulled a stunt like that over here (i.e. notifying someone's employer about a bank secret) it could basically close its doors right then and there. Dunno what Will Allen did or didn't do but when the league is really monitoring players to the degree that they know about their bank secrets, there's something wrong. Very wrong.

I'm saying if there was a bad transaction involving the NFL in some capacity, then it is correct to notify them, as they are a party to it. The most likely form of that involvement comes with Will Allen doing something with an NFL paycheck, or asking for his pay to be used in a certain manner that requires employer--NFL--notification. -
I guess that's what you get when you have a bird-brain with too much money and time... Is it so hard to just find constructive things to do in the off-season???

Not looking good for our secondary, this really sucks. He was the one player IMHO we really couldn't afford to lose. Even if we don't lose him, its a distraction.

As for the draft, this team had so many holes to fill and only a certain number of opportunities to fill them. In other words; they weren't all getting taken care of in one year.
In addition to the past draft being CB deep, it was also OT and DE deep. Had we ignored the pass rushers and drafted CBs you would be saying the same thing with regards to JT.
The fact is our FO saw fit to address the OL and DL heavily. The only reason it seems like a bad decision is because Allen seemingly has his foot in a bucket of s***. But that doesn't mean that it was in fact a bad decision. -
Everyone knew this team needed to be rebuilt and not retooled. A rebuilding process takes more than one year if your in fact trying to rebuild and not just trying to win a few games right away.
I am thankfull they took the approach they did because our lines had been neglected far too long. I am sure they are not through with their plan and still have some more effective rebuilding to do.
I am sure that most or a lot of their choices didn't agree with a lot of our expectations but at least they had a plan and thats more than we can say for some of the prior drafts. But that is JMO. -

Well now, just when I thought our luck had changed for the better...
Seems to me that our CB's will just have to be solid, and CB is one of those positions that a player can literally come out of anywhere and play well, so in that sense, I am putting alot of Trust in Todd Bowles's track record of turning Secondaries around quickly.
If we lose Will Allen, we may see Jason Allen back at CB.
I don't think i'd mind that too much at all. -
Looks very likely indeed. -
I'll believe a suspension will occur when I see it.
We hear every year that our team's players is going to get suspended, last year it was Joey Porter.. I think it's a wait and see approach more than anything. -

If not, you ought to consider it.
Take pics and post 'em here. :)
regarding your take on defensive backs being plug-and-play quick adapters... I've always thought it was supposedly the opposite. You can;t just take a raw guy with speed, for instance, and throw him back there without a long learning curve for his coverage responisbilities, I think. Although, it will help that we play a simpler defense now, I think, than Saban's complex (but effective) scheme.
