1. Panthers: Cam Newton, quarterback, Auburn.

Newton presents bust factor, but he's the most dominant talent in the draft at the sport's most important position. The Panthers are leaning toward a quarterback with the No. 1 overall selection, and Newton outplayed Blaine Gabbert by a massive margin at the college level.

2. Broncos: Marcell Dareus, defensive tackle, Alabama.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock reported this week that "everybody in the league" believes it would be an "upset" if the Broncos didn't use the No. 2 pick on Dareus. The best defensive tackle in the draft according to Mayock, Warren Sapp, and Rob Rang, Dareus is a no-brainer pick for Denver.

3. Bills: Von Miller, linebacker, Texas A&M.

Chan Gailey sent out indications at last week's owners meetings that he's head over heels for Newton and Blaine Gabbert. We're not buying it from a coach who specializes in turning non-premium quarterbacks into productive passers. Miller is everything that Aaron Maybin isn't..

4. Bengals: Blaine Gabbert, quarterback, Missouri.

If Carson Palmer skips the season (likely) and there's no pre-draft free agency (also likely), who's going to play quarterback in Cincinnati? Palmer is in physical decline anyhow, so even stubborn Bengals owner Mike Brown can't afford to pass on perhaps the highest-rated passer in the draft.

5. Cardinals: Robert Quinn, linebacker, North Carolina.

Arizona has made its interest in Gabbert clear, but he's not getting by the Bills and Bengals after the Panthers draft Newton first. The Cardinals' pick then comes down to Patrick Peterson and Quinn, and the latter plays a more needy position while also offering a higher long-term upside.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

15. Dolphins: Christian Ponder, quarterback, Florida State.

The Fins seem to swing and miss on second-round quarterbacks every offseason, so it's time to get serious. Ponder would be an upgrade over Chad Henne in terms of accuracy, smarts, athleticism, consistency, and touch. He'd take over as the starter at some point in year one.

Finally, some actual effort being given to mocking a selection for the Dolphins.

Not sure how much credibility I can give to a mock that has Locker in the top 10. That being said, supposedly there are some teams that have him ranked that high and there was rumors the Skins were interested in taking him last year. We'll see what happens, but I just can't see how someone takes him that high.

Personally, I don't think there will be that kind of a run on QB's to start the draft (four in the first fifteen picks). Even though you could argue many of the top 10-15 teams need a QB. Nonetheless, I think guys like Locker and Ponder will probably go in the late first/early second round.

JMHO.

How does over-drafting a 2nd round QB in the 1st round differ from "swinging and missing on a 2nd round QB"? lol.

Why would the Patsies want to take Reed at 17 when they can get him at 28 instead? What team is taking him in between there?

Because they’re apparently shopping #28.

gotchya. that would make sense then.

Any of you guys ever get the impression that NE gets so obsessed with trading back that they shoot themselves in the foot?

Then why not shop the 17th for better real estate and take Reed at 28 for a discounted price?

I'll take a shot at that...maybe because it's easier to move the #28 pick (i.e., more teams wanting to trade up into the bottom of the first round than the middle of the first round). Otherwise, IDK.

Nope. They did it last year and ended up with Devin McCourty, Taylor Price (who will be good) and Aaron Hernandez with the picks they received in trades. That's pretty damn good.

They may not be able to get him at 28. On the flip side, they could end up getting him at 33.

That's exactly what I was thinking! I don't think there is any magic around the 2nd round that dooms QBs. Second round QBs don't do as well b/c they're lower tier talents. Taking that same lower tier talent in a different round doesn't change anything other than what you're paying them.

Agree on that....... and Price too.

Year before it cost them Clay Matthews, right?

Better wording would've been if I said that "they could shoot themselves in the foot", meaning I hope it happens. lol.

I just didn't seen anyone from 18-26 who would be in the market for him based on needs, defensive scheme, etc...... unless I'm missing someone.

I think they are pretty happy with what they got.

Superstition? lol.

In my eyes, the difference between Josh Freeman and these guys is tremendous. I don't see how you can look at a QB who's had 3 surgeries in 2 years and put him remotely in the same class as Josh (or even Flacco).

I like Ponder, I see him as a Trent Edwards level QB. That's not bad, but I'm not in favor of using the 15th overall on Trent Edwards.
