http://www.rookiedraft.com/?p=1736 Interesting, "quick twitch athlete, did not play football until a Jr in High School" The same sort of things were said about Cameron Wake. Overall, I like him, but he is a 7th rd pick and very raw, Wake at least had two yrs in the CFL, McCoy is coming directly from MTSU...
Wake is the RealDeal, the next JasonTaylor. got to find someone to hold the edge @ SOLB. can McCoy do that?
Nope, that is Koa Misi's job. What McCoy is basically the backup RDE in our new 4-3 alignments. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5I3ZpUnlX0"]YouTube- Chris McCoy #98 DE/OLB Middle Tennessee Highlight Film (Part 1)[/ame] Now what I do notice from that little bit is: -relentless -good speed Downside -few passrushing moves -not a really great take off his first step rarely comes close to where his hands were placed on the ground, McCoy takes shorter, choppier steps, he needs to work on that skill. Shorter steps..more steps to reach the Qb which means it takes longer to get there...
Well think about this, 8 normal strides to get to the Qb, the longer the stride, the less the number of steps and the more ground the passrusher covers and the harder they are to block, with those short choppy steps the Olineman has longer to cut off the passrusher's arc. Each step forward thins the profile the blocker has to attack and knock the rusher off of his arc.
In thinking about this for a minute, it strikes me that McCoy and even Odrick have a hard hill to climb to gain playing time, on most teams the #4 DE on the depth chart faces a UDFA or marginal vet, in Miami, McCoy will go up against Andrew Gardner a All ACC left tackle, and Nate Garner, who was good enough to start for the Dolphins in 09. If McCoy does have success, the hill becomes even steeper, then he will face Vern Carey and Jake Long..if he can make an impact he will be one heck of a good prospect, and the Staff will know one way or another even before the preseason.
First of all, the player is an athlete, 2nd, he's got an excellent body, 3rd, he's fast...He's the definition of a Raw prospect with a high upside...his upside is not only with his body, speed, and athleticism combination, but also his instincts, for such a raw player,I see some nice natural football movements, and reads.. He was so worth a 7th rounder, great pick...
Here is the thing though Deej, Wake had literally hundreds of snaps in passrushing situations in the CFL, maybe even over 1,000 snaps of just passrushing, that is how he developed his toolbox. McCoy will be fortunate to have 100 snaps in the preseason, 50 plays a game, 4 games, he will be a substitute 3rd and 4th qtr type, heck he will be lucky to have 40 snaps in the preseason, clearly a tough tough environment to make an impression. I like this guy, but I also noticed he was unblocked perhaps too often to really get a feel for his hips and ankles and handwork...
Chris McCoy in his own words: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/gm-jeff-ireland-april-24-2010-620451.html?page=3 What should be interesting to watch this summer is whether or not Cam Wake and McCoy hit it off, they both have much in common in their games, one of the things that would have been fascinating to watch in 2009 would have been whether or not Porter and Taylor took Wake under their wing and taught him some tricks..my suspicion is both saw him as a threat to their jobs and from the CFL, an inferior league in their view. Strictly imho on that one. (BTW tut-tut Edgar, one should never end a sentence with a preposition..)
Theres some real raw ability there, and some open competition for depth, so for a 7th rounder, I like his athleticism enough to find out.
