NIN Releases Album For 'Free' On Web

For the NIN fans:

Following Radiohead's success/failure (depending on your statistical source) with In Rainbows, Trent Reznor has chosen to distribute the latest Nine Inch Nails album online, in varying forms for varying prices. The album appeared on the site for the first time on Sunday and has brought so much attention that excessive traffic crashed the site yesterday.

The album, Ghosts I-IV, features 36 instrumental tracks. For fans of NIN, there are five download options that await you:
Free - Without paying a single cent, you can download the first 9 tracks of the album, DRM free.
$5 - For one Abraham Lincoln piece of paper you get all 36 DRM-free tracks, as well as a 40-page PDF.
$10 - For a ten-spot, you get everything in the $5 set, two audio CDs, and a booklet.
$75 - For a more intense fan, the $75 package gets you everything from the $10 edition, on top of a data and Blu-Ray DVD, containing multi-track .wav versions of all the songs to allow for easy remixing on your computer.
$300 - For the hardcore NIN fans there is the $300 "Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition Package", containing everything in the other packages, as well as two numbered prints signed by Reznor as well as a copy of the album on vinyl.

The release of Ghosts I-IV is clearly trying to build structure onto the foundation laid by Harvey Danger (with the release of Little by Little in 2005) and then, more publicly by Radiohead with In Rainbows last year. What do you think? What version of the album would you go for?

Nine Inch Nails Album Generates $1.6 Million in First Week

Despite the album being widely available on torrent sites, the new Nine Inch Nails album, the 36-song self-released boxset Ghosts I-IV, has generated $1.6 million in sales revenue via 800,000 transactions in the first week of the album's availability, according to frontman Trent Reznor.
Of course, Reznor included free downloads in these figures, which are not being released to SoundScan in the traditional manner, according to Billboard.

Ghosts I-IV is currently the top-selling album on the Amazon MP3 store, where Reznor paid approximately $38 to have it distributed.

The collection has also inspired a film festival of shorts based on the music, to be held on the group's YouTube page, which went live on Thursday. The page will begin accepting submissions immediately through May 1. Music from Ghosts I – IV will be available for filmmakers starting on April 1 through YouTube's AudioSwap channel. Submissions will be personally reviewed by Trent Reznor, who will host a festival featuring the best entries at a later date.

anyone heard it? Im not a big heavy metal guy but ive always liked NIN. I love how they arrange their music.

I wouldn't classify him/them as heavy metal, even their older, harder stuff, they are purely industrial. Anyways, I've heard bits and pieces of the new stuff, it is all instrumental. Not a huge fan myself, I used to like their older stuff back in the day like Pretty Hate Machine/Broken/Downward Spiral albums.

It's a good album ... no lyrics, more ambiance as opposed to actual music. It's more like a soundtrack as opposed to an album. You can download the first 9 tracks for free from ghosts.nin.com and listen for yourself.

I was always a fan of that song Piggy... and they are fun to watch live. But I never got hooked into the whole industrial thing

Trent has definitely strayed away from the Industrial genre in it's true form. NIN was always a bit mainstream but after DS came out something had definitely changed during the making of the next album, it was a bit obvious the direction he was headed was a softer, pop style which incorporated radio friendly elements that focused more so on an ambient sound. When I think of the word Industrial it takes me back to names like Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Frontline Assembly, Wumpscut, Front 242, Godflesh, Leatherstrip, etc. Still songs like 'Something I Can Never Have', 'Terrible Lie', 'Sin', 'March of the Pigs', 'A Warm Place', 'Reptile' and pretty much the entire 'Broken' album is how I like to remember NIN.

The Hand That Feeds rocks on Rock Band, lol. I downloaded the 9 free ones too, not something I'd listen to in the car, but maybe for background when I'm doing something else.
