    Click the link if you haven't already. What we eat today are Cavendish bananas. Which were considered the less tasty, smaller, banana to the Gros Michel banana. The Gros Michel banana is what our parents and grandparents ate.

    A fungus began in the early 20th century, and by 1960 the tastier Gros Michel was gone. The Cavendish was immune, so that is what we've eaten since. But now a new strain of the fungus threatens to destroy the Cavendish just as it destroyed the Gros Michel. The banana used to be an exotic luxury. The article suggests it likely will again in our lifetime.
