Hopefully getting their gut check after the first game this year, is an advantage over getting it after the 2game last year.. were ahead of pace, and were a team that learns from its mistakes..We had a lot of first time situations last year where we didnt perform well, yet we always came back strong and showed that resiliency, we also showed intelligence, we showed that mistakes are actually correctable by the talent you have on the roster...

 

I don't see how we're ahead of pace......the only QB on the roster with the talent to make us a contender, is sitting on the bench getting NO game experience while we try and scratch out as many wins as possible, with a QB that is nothing more than a journeyman.

What are we on pace for? The 23rd pick in the draft for the next few years?

Yes. Having Henne sitting on the bench learning the playbook instead of throwing him out there is better for us longterm. This also gives us more time to solidify the OL, and add more weapons.

 

He knows the playbook backwards and forward by now. Henne is now at the stage where he wont improve until he actually gets in games. Penny has a few more games to get this team winning. Remember Sparano made it clear that Henne would play this year

 

and you know.. when all the other pieces work we probably will. Why would you throw a rookie into the fray when there are issues with the line and running.

 

But Henne isn't a rookie........not to mention he was a 4 year starter in college playing in front of 100,000 ppl at a time.

He isn't John Beck.....he doesn't need to be coddled. He needs game experience, that IMO, is being wasted right now on a journeyman QB.

 

You make some valid points, however I fail to see how Penny can take a 1-15 team to a record of 11-5 and the playoffs and win the AFCE Championship and deserve to be called only a "journeyman QB". :no:

He's not a journeyman, that's just not a true statement. FACTS suggest that Chad Pennington is a starting caliber QB who wins games, takes teams to the postseason, and yes wins games there. [see 02 and 04 postseasons] I don't see any of the other 15 teams promoting their backup QB either.

 

Aaron Rodgers is doing just fine and the Packers never started fishing for excuses to start him. What did he spend two or three seasons on the bench until Favre pretended to retire?

 

Yeah, I have NO doubt that had Henne started all season last year we wouldve easily one 14 games and the outcome last week wouildve been a decisive win for us.


Something tells me the coaching staff probably has much better insight to the best path to victory than anybody in here does.

I am still wondering exactly what it is you have seen that tells you Henne is our only chance of winning?

i agree on that point marty. also you dont want to wreck penny because you need both for the season. i think thats why penny was left in in garbage time. the coach wanted him to have one successful drive to get some confidence for this week. henne's time will come but its penny's for now

As well as hundreds of other kids that were not quite ready to lead an NFL offense. Many of whom had at least as much promise as Henne does :up:

 

please. dont insult henne. henne bounced back like a champ after that tampa fiasco. its all you needed to know about the guy's makeup. the one thing that jumps out at you about henne is how nothing rattles him. its almost a negative in that he stays in that pocket too long sometimes. he is the opposite of beck. he can take a beating and bounce back

 

From this point on in his career, Penny is a journeyman QB. He'll leave here and bounce around as a stop gap. He won't ever be in a SB or make any team a true contender....

His career is no more impressive than that of Steve DeBerg.....the consummate journeyman.

 

The Packers were happy to part ways with Favre so they could finally start Rodgers....And I think having Rodgers sit behind Favre, is apples and oranges to our situation.

 

Name me ten. the majority of those that failed were going to fail regardless. David Carr maybe. Ken O' Brien definitely and he actually had a pretty good career but he just got gunshy at the end. Winners can take a beating and they persevere through it. Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw, Eli Manning, Peyton Manning, etc. The ones that failed were going to fail regardless. Alex Smith sucked and was never going to amount to anything. Same with John Beck. I think that's one of those truisms that isnt so true

 

What you missed is unlike you, I'm not concerned with winning NOW...not concerned with scraping by each year to make the playoffs, then one and done and picking in the mid 20's on draft day.

What I'm concerned with, is getting Henne some playing time, some game experience THIS YEAR so that next season when this team is in a better position to contend, he's not out there getting his first cup of coffee...

The main issue is that we don't even know if Henne will be any good......we may need to keep looking for a QB.

Personally I would rather write this season off as a rebuild year and try to develop Henne, rather than sit back and watch Penny struggle to get us to a .500 season. To me that's just a waste....If we need to keep looking for another QB prospect, I want to know this year so we can make it our top priority in the off season.

all of those were horrible prospects other than O' Brien and Leaf. O'Brien to me is the best example of a QB who got destroyed by a bad line. Leaf was undone by his emotions and his busted shoulder. Leinart was a putz from day one. Smith was never going to amount to anything. Couch and Crouch were overhyped. Billy Jo another dud. Might as well throw in Akili Smith. Just because they're drafted high doesnt mean they're a good prospect. ehhh John Beck he's achieved 3rd string status in his 30th year hooray :wink2:

 

and thats the strongest case to be made for Henne. Next year I would hope that we can just load up on LBs, a NT, a WR, a TE and a FS an KR. I would like to know if Henne is ready and two have some experience so that we dont have to go through rookie mistakes with the guy in a year we could challenge for the AFC championship if we have another good offseason

no, you dont do that in this league, this team won its division, improved its talent and had a wondeful offseason of chemistry, strength and conditioning...

You give that damn team a chance to see what they can accomplish as an improved team, then when it becomes apparent that the team does not believe it has the proper parts to compete, then you make your move with Henne.

I have my questions about Chad, and iam gonna be watchin closely for some things and answers, but i find it hard to believe, that the variables from last year, compared to the positive variables going into this year, combined with serious athletic training, does'nt produce a better chad P this year.

 

We had all better cross our fingers and toes that Chad Henne is the future and that he is what we're looking for. Its seems like we have been in the quarterback shopping mode for years and years,... seems like forever. Its too bad quarterbacks don't come with a warranty and there is a lemon law for QBs.

You take away the wildcat and a surprising performance by the defense last year and we wouldn't be having this conversation. He was on his way to leading this team no where prior to what i mentioned above.

While there are some things I think he contributed, I still believe he got too much credit last year. His leadership was far more impressive than his actual play.

Now I'm sure Penny will have a few good games and shine on occasion this year and give the Penny crowd a chance to say 'we told u so' a few times.....but in the end it's pretty obvious how this is gonna play out. To me any way...

 

No need for one, developing starting Qb's is among the most difficult jobs in the US, we have one who is a proven starter, one who is a great prospect and one who is raw but very athletic.

Henning made do in Carolina with an exceptionally poor offensive situation, and he developed lil Abner in shoulder pads Jake Delhomme, with as much talent as we have we will be fine.

 

for the most part, were on the same page, however, with all the positive variables that have happened for chad this offseason relative to last, including him being healthy and training hard, i find it hard to fathom he will not be improved on his game.. you just cant pull the plug on a team so quickly, their a close knit group right now, we invested into them all offseason,, iam thinking there is an angle there for chad, you gotta let them fight to see what they can do as a group,...to a certain point of course.

As far as him improving his game, being better or even just as good as last season, I just don't see that happening. A lot of things came together last year for us and IMO, he and Fins had luck on their side to accomplish what they did.

Personally I think he's being asked to do more than he's physically capable of....

As far as ppl getting paid to make decisions, they used to pay Wanny, Camoron and Saban as well.....

These guys are better, but not above making mistakes. It wouldn't be the first time Parcells wasted time on washed up QB's.

That and let us not speak falsely now, Penny is also allowing the Oline to get their **** together as well as QBing while Teddy Ginn is learning how to play Wr in the NFL as well as allowing our UDFA Wr corps to make things happen.

Henne, when his time comes, is going to step into the best offense Miami has had in almost 30yrs...

Marino stepped into an offense with Clayton, Duper, Moore, Nathan, Stephenson, Kooch, Roy Foster, Henne can step into an offense with Long, Carey, Ginn, Brown, Williams, Fasano, but they will have learned how to play under Pennington.

 

I don't think confidence will ever be an issue as long as Pennington is our QB. He believes in himself, and in the team. That spreads to everyone around him. No way we see a team that doesn't think they can win.

 

What exactly is he doing that is helping those mentioned, grow?

We're at the point where we have to bring in a dwarf rookie QB to try and hit Ginn down field. And unless you count preparing them for check down situations, he's hardly a compliment to the remaining WR's.

The Oline? Penny's lack of ability to stretch the field, the limited windows he's able to throw into and his lack of ability to throw on the run.......are major factors holding back the progress of the OL.
