Nolan cannot make a lateral move. He could have to become a HC.

 

He's still under contract. The only way he leaves is if the new coach doesn't want him on staff.

ie; Mike Nolan, Defensive CoOrdinator and Asst. Head coach in charge of defensive peronal towel folding. Funny but it would satisfy the requirement 100%

I'm pretty sure Nolan's contract has expired, therefore, if true, wouldn't he be free to sign with a new team?

Personally, I don't think Nolan is as big a loss as some will make it out to be, especially if Zimmer is the head coach and Todd Bowles is retained as DC.

I don't think it's quite as liberal as described. My understanding was more that a team could have one Assistant Head Coach who under the lateral rule is one step up from coordinator and one down from head coach. I don't think we can go get say Green Bay's secondary coach by making him secondary coach and assistant in charge of scoping out the cheerleaders.

 

Yes. You can have unlimited assistant Head coaches. You can also promote Nolan to assistant head coach and wham, he's your new DC.

He's a solid defensive coordinator who I think has a good, sound scheme and does a good job implementing it, but he's not a great game-planner. He puts players in a good position to be successful, but as cliche and overused an allegation as it is, he doesn't make great in-game adjustments.

We need a defensive coordinator who can come up with something to compete with the Patriots, and I don't think Nolan can do it. Pretty much all our defensive coordinators in the past decade have done it at least once, the closest Nolan's unit came was the 1st half of the Patriots game, which I think had more to do with Todd Bowles taking over some of Nolan's duties than anything.

 

I'm completely confused about how this rule works now. I thought I remembered something along the lines of what JJ was saying. The way I thought it worked was all assistant coaching jobs were considered lateral moves just like postional coaches but you guys have me toataly lost.

 

After looking at some stuff online, I think perhaps it's just not as black and white as any of us are suggesting. It seems to have a lot to do with the team granting permission and how apparently permission can be denied at any time for anyone under contract but usually isn't. If Nolan is indeed under contract and wants this job, it may be a complicated dialogue between the commissioner, Blank, and Ross.

"When they are working," again does not fit the current Dolphins status...

This team has been 3-12 against winning teams in the last 3 years, and that includes 2 wins against the Jets in 2009... What is working well with this staff and the players????

Yeah my understanding is that the team has to ask permission to interview if its a lateral move. Then of course the employer can grant permission or block it if its a lateral move. If its a promotion the employer has no say at all. What I was questioning is what is the definition of a lateral move. I guess I should stop being lazy and look it up myself rather then wait for one of our resident gurus to do my homework for me :lol:

 

From what I see, I think the team technically even has to grant permission on a promotion. I think what prevents that from being an issue is that if a team plays it that way, they will suddenly have nobody willing to work for them.

This is NOT true anymore.

The NFL changed their rules a few years back. There are only 2 tiers of coaching recognized by the NFL- Either you're the Head Coach, or you're an assistant.

Any non-head coaching move is considered lateral; therefore a position coach to coordinator is not considered a promotion. Neither is a coordinator (or any other position coach) to Assistant Head Coach.

The rule is now fairly simple- If a coach wishes to make a lateral move, the team interested in hiring him can ask permission to interview. However, the team with which he is currently employed has the right to deny them the interview. If the job switch is considered a "promotion" within the confines of being an assistant (like a defensive line coach to a coordinator) many teams will grant permission anyway even though they are not obligated to do so. But an increasing number of teams deny permission for guys they want to keep.

However, if it's an assistant to a Head Coach, the team with which the assistant is currently employed CANNOT deny the opportunity to interview. The process of requesting the interview from the interested team is basically no more than a formality and seen as good form.

If thats the case then how did the fins deny Bowles an interview with the Rams for the HC job ? Then they allow him to interview with Oakland for the HC position. The interim tag came off as soon as the season ended.

Your right, just because this team has been a cluster you know what since 2004, we fans take for granted that when something does not work well after 3-4 years we have to wipe the slate clean...

But one thing we all know for certain, this team does have talent, maybe not good/great at all poisitions but they are talented for the most part and they have decent depth too... and that makes them competitive...

Who is in charge of the talent??? The GM...

Who is in charge of putting the talent on the field??? the HC...

Who is in charge of preparing the team for game day, giving them the sources (assistant coaches, equipments) so they don't look clueless on game day??? the HC...

maybe I am wrong on this, but maybe the reason this team was competitive on most games that they lost over the last 4 years was do to Ireland...

When did the Dolphins deny the Rams the chance to interview Bowles? They are not allowed to do that for HC job.

Teams cannot stop coaches from interviewing for a promotion.

However ALL coordinating jobs are equal in the eyes of the NFL. Meaning assistant special teams coach is equal status as the offensive coordinator/Assistant Head Coach position.
