Has to be very, very disappointing for Sony that the PS3 did that badly. I wonder what this does game developers decisions for next year? I mean they did sell over 450K but when you stack that against 770K for the 360.... I was really hopping this race would be closer so as to push both companies.
I found cod4 one of the most immersive single-player games I have played right along with mass effect. The scripted events made it feel more like something was going on other than running and shooting.
What I find strange is that the PS2 is still selling above the PS3 and competing with the next generation systems. The PS2 is helping keep Sony's heads above water, which is amzing considering the PS2 is 8 years old now (almost). Thanks for starting this post I've missed it.
I prefer my action games to be dynamic. If they play out the same time each time, what's the point? Team Fortress 2 for me, please.
TF2 is fun I love but its mp which I got a love for single player games more than mp so I am bias there but I also understand the work it has to make a single player game and the amount of quality that cod4 gives and with the mp mode without each side really suffering is impressive. You can bet if they tried going the route where things could be different cause more paths in gameplay the mp would have suffered a lot from it also who knows how long that would take to develop. The more freedom = tons more work and given most teams are given a time slot which the game has to be completed for the publisher it may not have been a reasonable idea.
It would take no longer to develop than the scripted on-rails CoD4 we have right now. As far as WW2 games go, give me Brothers in Arms.
Actually making more paths would take alot of work because you got to consider how a.i. would react would be the outcome of each path, how that would affect the future of the game you go to consider map size because of loading you have to test and debug each section that is walked on to make sure of no errors or glitches. If you want more than 2 that just multiplies the amount of work and testing needed done and if you do that for every level the amount of work for the environment artist and level designers adds up fast. Scripted sequence which yea takes work as far as animating but much less to test and debug and you can control what the player is doing to stop problems and you can create events that would be hard to accomplish in single player because you have no idea how a person would act in that area. Also environment detail doesn't need to be as good on say a helicopter flight because player won't notice small things where if you are actually walking through everything has to be half-way accurate to immerse the player. Say you wanted a specific scene to be seen you would have to depend on the player looking at the right place at right time and thats hard to determine. COD4 is modern so not sure what you ww2 statement had to do with much. Yea I agree i like BIA more than cod as far as ww2 because good strategy work in it I love that but I am also glad cod was moving on. Now it seems the COD team wants to go back to ww2 and work on the pacific theater which I hate because ww2 games are burned out. Also you can bet BIA will be really linear as well and you wont get to make your choices you want.
Sony's really off to a rough start but it's kind of their fault for gambling with Blu-Ray. Though with Warner Bros recent announcement and MGS4/GTA/Final Fantasy around the corner, things could probably be looking up. I'm not surprised by COD4's performance. Quality story backed up with good multiplayer. WWII? Not sure what that has to do with COD4. I don't consider the scripted way COD4 goes to be a negative factor. Keeps the game performance steady at optimal quality for most machines unlike Crysis, which isn't scripted but is a pain in the rear as far as trying to get everything on high settings and still work well. On scripted COD4, I can get 50 fps easily on 1920 by 1200 resolution. With Crysis, I'll be lucky to get 10 at that resolution with same high quality.
Unfortunately the PS3 right now doesn't have anything the 360 doesn't. Let's not forget the 360 is marketed everywhere (movies, etc). It will pick up, besides..Blu Ray is (I think) going to eventually win the format war, not to mention it's 10x better for gaming.
With Warner Bros announcement that they're going full Blu-Ray, Blu-ray has 70% of the market right now and they look like they're going to win. HD-DVD really needs a Hail Mary or two to get back into it. Their only hopes are to get a studio to flip-flop and Microsoft to make HD-DVD a standard on all 360's. If that doesn't happen, Sony and PS3 get a huge boost.
First of all, the XBOX 360 has been out longer than the PS3. Second the PS3 matched the XBOX 360 sales for their FIRST YEAR. Finally in November sales of ps3 have increased by over 300% and should keep increasing as more and more games come out. You really think the XBOX 360 was without its issues its first year and even now? Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, Motorstorm for starters.
Uncharted (and Uncharted 2, which was just announced), Metal Gear Solid 4, Home, Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo 5, Unreal Tournament 3.
Gotcha....so reverse it, how much does 360 have that PS3 doesnt? I have PS2 and thinking about upgrading...do I go PS3 or 360?
Dead Rising (and Dead Rising 2), Xbox Live, Halo 3, Forza Motorsport, Mass Effect, Splinter Cell Conviction. Also has the better version of Orange Box, though the PC version is still superior. I would honestly buy both consoles. Both have great games, though I will say I think the 360 has peaked with Halo 3's release.
Ratchet and Clank and Warhawk are both worth mentioning, but the 360 has its fair share of FPS games (eliminates worrying about Haze), Motorstorm's not THAT great, and Eye of Judgment... nah. Also, I've never liked Tekken: Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive are better.
360 does have Mass Effect, which I find brilliant in its own right. Makes me wish Bioware could helm a new Knights of the Old Republic for the 360. And for those of us who play Madden (this is a football-related site of course ), the 360 has much better frames per second than PS3 versions and you can tell the difference. That said, owning both consoles has been a joy for me (though if it weren't for a bit of luck, I wouldn't be able to say so). My recommendation would be to buy one console first, play around with it, wait for the other console's price to drop and then get that. I did that with the last generation.
From what I've heard their new project seems to be some sort of MMORPG, which is a shame since KOTOR is so much better as a story-based single player game, if that project is indeed KOTOR. They actually have a KotOR 2, it's just that Obsidian handled it and wrecked it. KOTOR 2 was a real half-***ed effort judging by it's convoluted plot and bugs.
I don't blame Obsidian for KOTOR 2 as much as I blame Lucas Arts which gave them a year to not only make a deep sequal but improve the engine.
True, but Obsidian had created much more yet at the last second removed some content that would've made it a better game and certainly make things more streamlined.
I'll probably buy a PS3 in the next round of cuts, but as a Blu-Ray player. Never been an MGS or FF fan. I hope to hear a release date for Alan Wake for the 360 soon. Sounds excellent.
Yea I am waiting for another price cut first. Also i agree on alan wake I can't wait to hear something soon been watching it since it was first announced way back.
http://www.dailymail.com/News/TechnologyNews/200801070134 Sony sells 1.2 million consoles over the holidays. Numbers should go up as more exclusives come out. http://n4g.com/NewsCom-97292.aspx Turok going to be the same on PS3 as 360. Development issues overblown. Hopefully Gabe Newell reads this before *****ing and whining further.
They had to. There were a lot of crashes that they just didn't have time to fix. If they were given another 6 months the game would of been at least on par with the first one.
Those numbers will drop, as will all the other console numbers from december. I think to get a good gauge on the price cut, have to take Jan and Feb numbers, since Nov and Dec had the big holiday sales and historically it declines afterwards. But in all I'm sure the price cut help generate more sales.
Blu-Ray is going to win soon and I think people see that now. This should boost PS3 sales in the near future. It looks like the big gamble probably paid off. Plus 360 has peaked way too early. I'm skeptical about how that system will perform later in this generation, and also what effect their limited DVD storage capacity will have on things. That's the main reason I haven't bought one, because I would like to play Bioshock and Mass Effect. I couldn't care less about Halo though to be honest.
Yea Main reason i picked up xbox was for those games but several xbox games I enjoy. I want a ps3 much also because I think ps3 will start picking up speed soon.
Yeah I think this will probably the year that it pays to have a PS3. I can't wait for MGS4 myself. I tried to play the Bioshock demo on my PC but my graphics card couldn't seem to handle it.
Your missing out if you think they are the only good exclusives. Uncharted and Warhawk are two of my favorite games right now. Not to mention GT5, God of War 3, Home, Socom, etc.. all coming out this year (hopefully).
God of War 3 should be great. I can't wait for that. I like Heavenly Sword a lot too. It's pretty short though so I just rented it.
